figgins
East Dulwich Deli is hilarious. You get the feeling they're doing you a favour by selling you their overpriced cakes/olives etc. We take great pleasure in visiting just after Christmas to pay bargain prices for their delicious chocolates.Oh, and I once nipped in there for a (very expensive) pint of milk (desperate times, indeed) and when I got it home, it was off. Alex K
Ah, East Dulwich Deli! One visit only -- "Can you recommend a cheese? Not too pungent." This one; we are certain that sir will enjoy it. Home, biscuits, wine, and the gustatory equivalent of a cake of soap.Well, they sold it; they were rid of it; and since then I have been rid of them. Hawley
Must be something wrong with me as I've only ever experienced excellent service in every shop/pub/restaurant I've been into in SE22. And that includes the tea shop. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/37895-lordship-lane-shops-service/page/3/#findComment-691721 Share on other sites

Really is a shame as the chef is a lovely lady, but stopped going there due to the service. I do get the impression that some of the more established vendors simply dont give a monkeys. tallulah71
The Bishop has been laissez fair for a while. Too much competition? Still happy for the coked-up builder brigade. The other one next door which sells beer and burgers I have found to be lovely, attentive and knowledgable.EDD? who even shops in there? Emperor's new clothesEveryone without exception on North Cross Rd is lovelyHouse of Tippler - only had 1 cocktail but will def be back for more. Very welcoming and informative - good, fun people. The one we're not allowed to mention? Haven't been back there in years. Can do better at home, frankly.Franklins - both shop and restaurant - without doubt the best(I eat a lot...) verds
Come further up the hill - the people in Plough DIY are so helpful and Gastronomia cafe, which used to be staffed by teenagers who would rather text than speak to the customers, has now been taken over by a really nice man who holds the door open and does a mean ham and cheese toastie. Also, the butchers up this end has no queue but some delicious meat.I also like Captured in the Rye for a chat and some toast, and they're very nice in Greetings card shop. There are a few other places mentioned earlier I don't bother going in because the staff aren't very nice. adonirum
Read this thread with great interest, it's amazing people's different experiences and how their points of view are sometimes so diametrically opposed. Like mine here and now. Afraid I have to take issue with "New Wave" and their comments about Chener Books (although on this occasion I had dealings with the rather older lady I will kindly refer to her as rather than the gentleman ). Upon making an enquiry, I was met with the most disdainful, contemptuous and haughty attitude and reply it has been my misfortune to experience in many a long year from any person in any realm or walk of life. Fortunately, and I know that this comment will probably lead to some howls of derision, I am an extremely articulate and erudite individual, and managed to quite deliberately "slap her down" with a choice of words that I suspect she had neither heard before nor knew the meaning of. I further suspect that her attitude arose from the manner of my attire and some preconceived notion of the type of person I must have been. Yes, and this honestly is not meant as a pun, we are talking about the possibility of judging a book by it's cover!!! I left, somewhat confused and perplexed as to why an independent business would, from the outset, treat potential customers in this particular manner. and, obviously, without having conducted any business with them and, needless to say, taking my custom elsewhere. It would be interesting to learn if anybody else out there has encountered this lady and her pompous behaviour and air of superiority that was, it has to be said, and inevitably probably still is, somewhat misplaced!!!!!! DaveR
Adonirum, perhaps the fact that, through modesty, you wear your undoubted erudtion so lightly, led her unsuspectingly into an error that can, on reflection, be forgiven?
