Having to amend my top 10 WWII films:

"The Foreman went to France" rocks as a propaganda-fest from Ealing. Gordon Jackson looks about 12 years' old.

Cavalcanti, assoc. producer, directed one of my all time faves: "Went the Day Well?".

This thread reminded me how wonderful SimonM was. RIP.

Ted max, you raise an interesting point. I totally view Casablanca as a romantic movie as opposed to a resilience building, spirit raising, morale boosting war movie. However you are so right - apart from anything else, she does choose the war hero to help in his Resistance fighting at the end - cue Lockheed Martin. It is just more subtle than the typical aerodrome ones. Thank you for reminding me.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is seen by some as the best British movie so far. Interesting that A Canterbury Tale and Went the Day Well? are also quoted above. I've watched the former a couple of times in the last year and I do like the way the stereotypes are crafted.

I don't know if I could get to ten but I think my favourite of all time must be Seven Samurai. For poignancy I would have to go for Bicycle Thieves and, slightly out of left field, Etre et Avoir. The Purple Rose of Cairo is my favourite Woody Allen film but I haven't seen many of his more recent ones.

The Ghost and Mrs Muir (with Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison)

Brief Encounter

La Gloire de mon Pere

Schindler's List

Amelie

Look at Me (French film Comme une Image by Agnes Jaoui who also stars)

Hedd Wyn (Welsh film nominated for best 'foreign' film Oscar! Bloody cheek)

Hilary and Jackie

Wall-E

Lemon Tree (palestinian-jewish Israeli collaboration)

    • Thanks for these responses. Yes, Cllr Browning & Cllr Hartley did a door-knocking exercise a couple of months ago. It was Maggie Browning who knocked and I told her that I'd had radio silence from Jon Hartley. She looked embarrassed but not surprised. I have spoken to him since, only after writting to Ellie Reeves, our MP about it his lack of response. He agreed to address the issue I asked about but I've not heard from him since. It's really not acceptable for an elected Councillor to consistently ignore his ward constituents. Since it's clearly not a one-off, I'm gonna pick this up formally. I'll let you know how I get on...
    • If memory serves, Labour under Corbyn got more electoral  votes than Labour under Starmer. So I'm not sure how you can call that being "unelectable"? Under a different and fairer electoral system Labour would have won. I see moves are afoot to bring in such a different, fairer system, presumably in the hopes of stopping Reform winning next time. BTW there was a mass exodus from Labour  by  the local (East Dulwich) Labour party members when Corbyn was kicked out by Starmer. It isn't just Islington who doesn't want to support  a right or centre right Labour party.
    • Is this the new shop next to Dulwich Tandoori? is it actually open and if so has anyone tried them.
    • It was The Brickhouse - we liked them and it was very sad when they had to close
