Thanks for this DF - good to know for the future

This from the Southwark website, although given that they think there are 6bn Christmas trees in uk who know how reliable any of their info is!!

-------------------------------------------------

Real Christmas tree collections

Each year approximately six billion trees are used to celebrate Christmas in Britain, sadley only 10% of those trees end up being recycled. This January make the most of your Christmas tree and help the environment at the same time by recycling your tree.

Choosing to recycle your Christmas tree in Southwark ensures that your tree will be composted and used as a soil improver for agricultural purposes around the country.

There are three easy ways to recycle your Christmas tree in Southwark

If you have a food and garden waste collection, real Christmas trees can be collected as part of your normal household collection service. Simply remove any decorations and its pot or stand and place your tree next to your brown bin ready for collection.

If you do not have a scheduled food and garden waste collection service you can book an ad-hoc collection and arrange for your Christmas tree to be collected. Simply telephone 020 7525 2000 or email the environment team to book.

From 6 to 31 January there will also be real tree collection sites at the following places around the borough

Reuse and recycling centre on Devon Street (off Old Kent Road)

Belair Park

Peckham Rye Park

Southwark Park

No, that can't be 'six billion' !!

Must mean 6 million.

Still an awful lot of trees to grow, acres to spray, petrol to cut down and transport, then throw out.

Consider a container grown alternative next year, one you keep in the garden and repot steadily over several years, up to the max size before planting out.

(There's more info in another thread on this, now in 'ED Trades and Businesses' - someone was complaining about bad ones.)

Just received this link from Southwark council via Twitter: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/1519/christmas_opening_hours

Christmas trees can be collected as part of your normal garden refuse, alternatively you can take them down to one of the collection sites [Devon Street (off Old Kent Road), Belair Park, Peckham Rye Park and Southwark Park] or can arrange an ad-hoc collection by calling/emailing the environment team.

Luckily we have a bin store, so didn't feel so bad leaving it out for collection. It got collected when the brown bin collection happened last week. But agree - bit selfish of others to dump it by the road (saw one by the crossing outside the EDT today) or in the bins of others.

    • I totally agree with jazzer having been “jumped on” by various members.. I try and help as that is the sort of person I am, but now will try hard  to just read and not reply.. was down right hurtful to have a comment made along the lines that as I was no longer as person supposed, in ED and moved somewhere else should just leave group. No longer sure what sort of people are on this group - certainly not as pleasant as it was 15 years  ago when people were pleasant, helpful and some things were a joke and much more  light hearted. Everyone has a right to their own opinion as it is a public forum- meaning anyone can join from where-ever but c maybe I have got that wrong as well / doesn’t matter as I will probably leave…
    • Doesn’t this business at the tills already happen in some grocery shops?
    • They shot part of an episode of the Bill around Camberwell Old Cemetery, a film set was nothing like this, for a start there were no cameras! Or direction, or site vehicles, or re-takes.
