Yeh I love Marie's, they once took me into the kitchen to demonstrate their rice steaming equipment - a revelation :)

Edited to say: I've lived in ED on and off for seventeen years (aaarrrrggghhhhh!!!!!!) and the TCC has been quite variable since it opened - good, then bad (I stopped going after a dish which tasted of watered-down Bovril) then better again.

Edited again to say: I believe Marie's only has Thai food in the evenings - during the day they're a "normal" greasy spoon.

Pedigree chum on toast sounds more appealing then Pad Thai at the Thai Corner. Clearly, I should come on here and say how wonderful cr*p is and that I like to pay ?5.50 for it, as some people clearly do.

Thai Corner described by critics as 'more reminiscent of a British chip shop than exotic Thai cuisine'.

Rowanofsking......there is more to life then the Thai Corner in East Dulwich, have you heard of 'Google?', it will help you discover more then just East Dulwich.

Square Meal's own summary is that "East Dulwich?s Thai Corner Cafe elicits a resounding thumbs up from those who?ve discovered its bijou charms. Meagre decoration & minimal space between tables become immaterial when you are in the company of, for starters, aromatic fishcakes or the punchy chicken satay. Moving on, the same is true for creamy red curry & a first-rate pad thai. As a buzzy, busy BYO, Thai Corner comes out even cheaper than you could hope."

Or perhaps you would rather take Time Out's word for it? "Good things come in small packages. This snug restaurant only holds 30 people at a time, but those lucky 30 must be the happiest diners in Dulwich. Start with a few chicken skewers: they look innocent enough, but carry incredibly potent flavour. A high-standard all-round makes it difficult to set a foot wrong: the prawn and cashew nut stir fry was a worthy choice for mains, but better was a wonderful duck curry and its accompaniment of coconut, pineapple and baby tomatoes (they popped deliciously in our mouths). Amazing that some people simply feel that their point of view is the only one! Davey - you don't like the TCC - good don't go there then and it will be easier for me to get a table next time I want to go.

Just to add my two pence worth.... My brother in law lives in Bangkok and not that this gives me any authority over Tahi food but I have eaten it all in Thailand - street food, beach food, corner cafes, regular restaurant and really posh restaurants.... the TCC is great, good food every time, (more authentic and cheaper than Sima Thai) good value for money and yes perhaps the service is not the most amazing in the world but is isn't anything to complain about.

I have to say though that it is actually very authentic, it is like eating in someone's front room, which is exactly how restaurants are in Thailand, especially with the pictures of the royal family on the wall!!! great place and really reminds me of Thailand every time I go...

That put you in your place Rowanofski! I mean, didn't you know that there was more to London than just East Dulwich? Of course you did!

Another great thing about the TCC is that it's BYO bottle, which massively cuts down on the overall bill. ?5.50 for a main meal is 'OK' compared to most Thai places which charge in excess of ?8 for a main.

Anyway, Rowanofski, I'd MUCH prefer to eat Thai than say....Icelandic fare, for example, wouldn't you?::o

I have been going to the Thai Corner Cafe for years and was a massive fan of the authentic food, but after having a really bad meal there on Sunday, i will think twice about heading back - which is sad.

Great point well made Moos. Ol' DJ's playing the same moves as the guys who say "I've had enough, adios!" at the end of their observation. Too much tinkle and not enough tonkle.

Even so, I used to find the TCC a little bit sweaty on the oil, and not enough sparkle on the salad. I went there thrice in three years and never left feeling I'd had a glimmer of the experience I'd like from a paid-for nibble. I'd like my tastebuds to tremble, and the TCC never offered that.

I made the mistake of trying out this Thai-Mediterranean tapas restaurant in Charlton. Now I know there are so many things wrong with that sentence already but there were mitigating circumstances and it was making the best of a bad job. But still the sheer horror of what I had to eat... oh gawd

Cutting a pepper in half, using old roasted chicken leg and drowning the lot in an inch of soy and fish sauce does not a tasty dish make is all I'm saying

I love the food at the Thai Corner cafe and was there after a gap of many years earlier this week. I have no complaints at all about the food or service, but the tables are so very close to eachother, it was like sitting on a strangers lap.

We had couples on each side, discussing the state of their relationship - "you must tell me what you need from me, I feel so betrayed, I never realised that you ..." (to say any more would be unfair) etc, etc, etc. And another couple where she was saying that she needed "space" and felt as though she couldn't "breathe". I found it hard not to laugh at times, but it was just not appropriate - very, very, very uncomfortable.

Who are these frightful customers in there?

Why do they insist on discussing their private business next to me?

I may even be forced to blog it, and if they do it again, I will put their photos on my damn blog too. I never get out, and when I do, it is bloody misery bootcamp (sigh).
