Dear Concrete House Fans,

I'm writing a story about the building for our paper next week and would like to talk to people about it.

So, if you love it/hate it, please feel free to get in touch.

I understand it's the weekend but I'd love to hear from anyone who has somthing to say on the subject.

Thanks.

PS I've added my mobile number to this. Perhaps a mistake, but nothing ventured ...

The Land could be better used to serve the community, so to demolish the building would be tragic in the eyes of heritage. but the reality is the property has been neglected for decades and it would be refreshing to see the land put to some good use IMHO. I actually read the Wiki info about that house a few years ago.

Great so knock down a local landmark and stick up a block of flats that will look grotty and outdated within a decade. I think it would serve the local community as a house with trees and landscaped gardens rather than yet another block of flats or something equally as disturbing.

Louisa.

ps. I wouldnt say no to a Burger King but thats my one exception ;-)

  • 2 weeks later...

There is an article in the online edition of the SLP, reporting that "the council?s executive will meet to consider recommending a compulsory purchase order (CPO) for the Grade II listed property and to allocate up to ?75,000 for the building?s renovation"

Concrete House to be saved

Great news if the recommendation is approved

Thanks p-in-ed.

Not quite the exciting article I was anticipating from the SLP. The first journalist that got in touch seemed to have a whole new angle and this story is rather tame. But never mind - at least they are raising the profile of the place.

Simon's right, ?75k will go nowhere. But a minimum ?20 per annum donation buys membership to the Heritage for London Trust (HOLT) and helps fund the projects that they undertake. I joined...

I am really pleased that this landmark is going to be saved. Considering the old war memorial has been fully restored, it seems fitting that another local landmark can be given the same care and attention. I would like to see the place turned into some sort of East Dulwich museum, with the interior taken back to what it would have perhaps looked like when it was first built.

Louisa.

Ah the ?75K is just for temporary works - that makes a lot more sense. Maybe as the same architect designed Dulwich College the College could be persuaded to support the restoration? And if the ES report is to be believed it looks like that so-called "replica" may be demolished?

Well done Southwark Council and well done Paul Noblet.

A really good outome.

Might be prudent to write to or send an email of support to Hazel Blears to ensure that the compulsory purchase order is approved.

I don't know how compulsory purchase orders work, but I would hope it's a transfer of ownership without any payment to the current owner. And if the new building behind the concrete house has been built without planning permission, perhaps the compulsory purchase order can be extended to that building as well as the plot they both stand on.

I like Louisa's idea of setting up a museum. Perhaps the new building could be incorporated into that kind of plan - as admin space or something

With you on this one Louisa a local museum dedicated to ED past to present, may be a counter selling local books, old photos for sale and on display. Pull the new house down make a safe green area for kids and bugaboos, coffee, cakes, munches all subsidised, local employment volunteer to help run it bring money and employment to the area, register it as a charity and plough the money back in to it. I'll even volunteer myself. What about a volunteer clean up team or to give some time to help re build even just a bit of labour I can't type quick enough, any one with me, more ideas please, a great big thank you and a hug to all the people out there who bothered to read this thread or post it's YOU that made this possible.See you in the Cherry can't get there till 10.

PS Should we start a fire watch team.

Check out what Wandsworth Council are doing to the 'silent' partner of the owner of our concrete house...google Rajiv Laxman. He has demolished a listed building in their borough without permission and will go to prison if he doesn't re-build it exactly as was. And time is running out...

    • And now we have the worst labour government in many many decades who by moving to your position on the right are ushering in a far right reform government. Well done you.
    • You implied he did a good job in your first paragraph when you said you would have hated to see Corbyn lead the country through Covid - the alternative being Johnson, presumably? With the results we all saw. Unite - you have a problem with unions? Who work hard to see that their members get a fair deal in their workplace? How exactly are these people and groups "all as bad as each other"? In what way? Labour "purging their party of the far-left" has given us a weak prime minister who has apparently deserted any "left" (aka caring for other people and having decent moral principles) leanings he ever had. Which is why people appear to be leaving Labour in droves and voting, or intending to vote, Green or Lib Dem or for an independent Left candidate. Starmer has shot himself in the foot, in my opinion. But what would I know. What worked?! I don't know enough about what you are talking about to comment, but "believing" you know the reason someone did something does not make it true. I don't believe that Corbyn ever got "starstruck" or "forgot about his politics", but if you can provide evidence that those things are true, then fair enough. I don't think you can, though.
    • I think you need to get a grip If it's who I am thinking of, she's a young black girl in her twenties, has braids with bright colours through them and - I suspect - works with her father. It's always the same man behind the wheel and he's older than her, always in the same van, so I'm assuming it's a father-daughter combo which, if it is, I think is rather sweet.  They hustle hard in a job that is poorly paid, has little prospects, is relentless and thankless. The fact that they have stuck it out since the pandemic says a lot about them.  I think she's a lovely girl, who's perhaps a little shy - but she'll smile or chat back if you make the effort with her. And I admire her for sticking with that job for so long. Perhaps she's just one of these people who's naturally a bit clumsy or bashes things, the same way some people are heavy on their feet when they walk. But I wouldn't dream of jeopardising her job because she closes the slams the gate and doesn't 'kiss' the ring doorbell with her fingers.  Perhaps she's being passive aggressive because you are. And perhaps she also wishes she got to spend her time worrying about potential damage to her letterbox or her gate.  As for your gate / letterbox - you're talking about hypotheticals. Has there been any damage? No. Then go and live your life and worry about it when it happens.  (apols we have the wrong person, but some of my points still stand).
    • Greg did an amazing job! He built a cabinet in my living room and added shelving. A lovely guy and perfectionist who goes the extra mile. He really understands what you want and comes up with various options to meet your price range. Would highly recommend!
