Bellenden Belle
Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas .... the wonderful Judy Garland, from Meet me At St Louis (Ahhhh, reminds me of the Trolley Song - if only commuting from Peckham Rye to London Bridge held the same romance). david_carnell
It isn't. It was merely a Xmas no. 1 - not the same thing at all. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4669-favouritebest-christmas-songs/#findComment-150479 Share on other sites

*Bob*
Speaking of festive number 1's (potentially) it seems this year's X-Factor winner will be releasing a cover of 'Hallelujah' as their first single.Have you pre-ordered your copy yet, Keef? I know it's a favourite. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/4669-favouritebest-christmas-songs/#findComment-150482 Share on other sites
david_carnell
For the love of god, how many more horrendous covers of that tune are we going to have to endure? As I read somewhere else and will now try and pass off as my own wit, oh the irony when the winner of xfactor has to sing the line:"....you don't like music, do you?" Keef
'Hallelujah' is one of those songs that is a victim of it's own quality. There have been a couple of great versions, Jeff Buckley's being my favourite by a mile, but there are many more terrible versions. Catherine Jenkins has it on her latest album ffs!I actually watched half of X Factor on Saturday for the first time this series. The black girl has got a very good voice.I also watched the whole of Strictly, and then made a point of watching the results show yesterday. I need to stop this staying in at the weekend nonsense, it's bad for me!Stay another day was a master stroke. Take a soppy song with no link to christmas, add some bells at the end, sorted, christmas number 1. Ted Max
The way George pronounces "special" in: "this year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special" predates its current usage by about 20 years, but always makes me smile at the thought that George is indeed looking for someone "special" to give his love to. Jah Lush
Right apart from the obvious Fairytale of New York I like: - Saint Etienne's I Was Born On Christmas Day, Elvis Presley's Merry Christmas Baby, Chuck Berry's and Keith Richard's versions of Run Rudolph Run and Darlene Love's Christmas Winterland. capt_birdseye
I'm with david_carnell, that Phil Spector Christmas Album knocks spots off the competition and bears repeated playings. Fairytale of NY is great, but like most xmas tunes has been played to destruction, so I can't listen to it anymore.
