The Honor Oak has been refurbed and opens for business today. We stopped by yesterday to check it out, as it looked really nice. The new owner was there and we asked if it was a gastro pub - he reacted as if that was an insult, and informed us that it is most definitely not a gastro pub (apparently that is 'old hat'), it is a 'british dining concept' - ha ha, needless to say on the basis of that pretentious and unfriendly 'welcome' we will giving it a miss!!

Mention it by all means but should not be in the ED Businesses, Restaurants & Trades section.

Should be in the Lounge.

How is that pretentious and unfriendly? You'll really not go somewhere because the landlord says that?

Really?

We tried to book, but no luck, so we turned up to try and get a table, again we failed

So went to the Crooked Well, no luck either

Ended our tour at The Camberwell Arms, and it delivered. Whole chicken sharing platter for 4, roast potatoes and greens, bottle of wine

It's so consistent and secretly where I really wanted to go in the first place, even my not-so-communicative teen-boy was fully engaged with the whole thing

I shall try again with The Honor Oak and The Crooked Well, pretty well spoilt for choice on a Sunday, or any other come to think about it

Tried the new Honor Oak on Friday evening. We were there by 18:30 and it was really busy. Inside full of grown ups, garden full of families & kids. I liked it but unfortunately when we tried to order food at 19:30 they had stopped taking orders as they were too overwhelmed! And I really wanted the Lobster Burger... The restaurant bit looked nice. It was fully booked out so we didn't even get to see the menu (different from the bar menu).

Didn't get to see the Whisky Room either but look forward to paying another visit.

So we went off and ate at Babur. Which was expensively delicious!

I look forward to trying it out with Mrs Sydenham Central and Master Sydenham Central along with the new Bistro in Sydenham (on the Hoof) which is opening soon (and is wonderful as we went to the 'soft' opening).

Why do people no like the term Gastro pub? It's just a word, and to me means 'they serve food that is a little better than McDonalds'. Where I grew up, all pubs served food, and they were all the same. There is probably more variety now than there ever was.

Good luck to them. Shame they covered up those beautiful tiles outside though, which was a bit daft.

I think "Gatro pub" is a dated term now, and it puts me in mind of the early 2000s when it meant that pubs would be stripped out, and serve very bland food in very bland surroundings. If I was opening a new pub that was aiming for good food, I'd want to avoid the term to be honest.

    • The events section on here isn't that big! There are presently only 20 events on there for the whole of February! It's just taken me about ten seconds to scroll through to see what's on! Also, where did you sign up for this summary email? Is it definitely coming from this forum, as I can't see it mentioned anywhere?
    • I'm a bit confused. You posted less than half an hour ago (as I type) but at the bottom of your post on what seems to be a screenshot dated yesterday evening  it says you found it? If you haven't, can you not contact the charity shop directly in case they still have it?
    • Can anyone help? When moving home I accidentally sent a framed print to a charity shop on Lordship Lane.  It’s not worth money just of sentimental value to me. 🥲 Has anyone seen this or purchased it? please get in touch with me 07583160009 many thanks
