Crown & Greyhound

The Crown & Greyhound is undoubtedly a lovely pub in a great location and is perfect for a pint after a walk through the park. However, over the last few months I've noticed that things have started to slip quite drastically. Different ales often run out, service is slow (without a smile), plates are never cleared up (particularly in the garden during the summer) and the quality of the staff leaves a lot to be desired. I realise that many of them might be students but you would at least expect them to actually notice who is next in the queue, smile and have at least an idea about the drinks they are serving. The place really is resting on its laurels.

ha! how fitting .. we were just there this weekend and you're quite right - the service is shocking and it's very sad. the new staff just can't be bothered and walk away before you've even completed your order .. not how it used to be in the old days .. tut tut

Just out of interest, I presume the Crown and the Plough are the same brewery, or food supplier, as the menus look the same- food, design etc is this right? Went in the White Hart in CP at the weekend too and they had a very similar designed menu with very similar food. All nice pubs but I get a bit tired of seeing the same old menus.

They are both Mitchell & Butler operations, as is the Phoenix.

Both Butler & Mitchell (I think - not hot on pubco's). What I hate the most is the smell of food - it seems to get everywhere - not nice if you've not eaten there yourself.

It's a lovely pub especially in the summer when you can sit outside and watch the world go by but the service has been crap in there for years, decades even. High turnover of staff speaks volumes.

That's interesting, other Mitchell & Butler operations are The Harvester, Commercial in Herne Hill, Alleyns Head in West Dulwich. Learn something new every day.

Yep, they are the same crowd too. Know this as The Plough had to borrow their PA for a gig one night.

One of the manager's who used to work in one of the SE22 M&B pubs has now left and spends much of his day giving out about the M&B corporate restrictions.

Barney ran The Grove in Camberwell and then the Dog and ran them both well..

Like the Dog, but you're spot on about the service. Such a shame.

I thought I'd wandered into a Tory Party fundraiser the one and only time I've ever visited. Heard great things about the Sunday Lunches though.

They were amongst the most disgusting things I've ever eaten, as indeed was the whole "meal" they accompanied :-S

I'd take a lot of persuasion ever to have Sunday lunch at the Dog again ......

Gave up on the Dog last summer.

Had lunch at the Plough on New Years Day though. Wasn't bad, although I nearly resorted to cannibalism as it took so long to arrive.

Yes - I agree the Herne food is fantastic and has been for some time, regular menu changes too. However it is ideal for families as the garden is a play area, so if you are not keen on kids in pubs then maybe not for you, but if like me you have young children tis ideal, they can play safely while you finish your food/beer.

I'm glad they finally got it sorted as they did get a lot of negative coverage on here when the new guy first took over. He seems like a nice chap and I hope it continues to go well for them.
