This end of LL main stretch is now overwhelmingly the better end in terms of shops. With the opening of the cinema I can see this stretch overtaking the top end of the lane in the next few years in terms of footfall and choice. It now makes sense that Waitrose were so badly wanting to bid for the former police station.

Fresh pasta, with good quality ingredients in the filling, hand made on site. Bear in mind overheads like rent and so on also. Sainsbury's fancy pasta retails at 1p per gramme http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/dairy-eggs-chilled/CategoryDisplay?langId=44&storeId=10151&catalogId=10122&categoryId=12266&pageSize=30&beginIndex=0&promotionId=&listId=&searchTerm=&hasPreviousOrder=&previousOrderId=&categoryFacetId1=&categoryFacetId2=&bundleId=&parent_category_rn=12157&top_category=12157&orderBy=PRICE_DESC#langId=44&storeId=10151&catalogId=10122&categoryId=12266&parent_category_rn=12157&top_category=12157&pageSize=30&orderBy=PRICE_DESC&searchTerm=&beginIndex=0. The B&S photo looks like the agnolotti cavour http://www.burroesalvia.co.uk/about-2-1/ which they sell for 2.7p per gramme. So yes, nearly 3 times the price of Sainsbury's pasta but the Sainsbury's version seems to have less expensive ingredients, and is made and bought on an industrial scale.

Also, think of this ... if you boiled it for a couple of minutes, drained and shoved it in a pan with a bit of butter and sage, shoved a few rocket leaves on the side and served it on nice crockery, the additional production cost would be very small, but then you could charge ?8+ and that wouldn't be out of line with Scorsi and Morci, or the place down by the station, or anywhere else I can think of.

Actually I was hoping they'd let you reuse them in the shop, they are sturdy cardboard boxes, seems a waste to throw them away, even in recycling. Will ask next time I'm in.

Overheads do not have much bearing on the price...

If your overheads are so high that the end product is not viable at a reasonable price

then you have chosen the wrong product or destination..

There is always a ceiling price.. Like the housing market..

If buy a house where say the average asking price is ?250k and spend ?150k doing it up

its not going to be worth ?400k

Likewise Pasta has its price.. and ?6.00 for a few pieces of Ravioli however nice it may be

thrown into a box is not good.

As with most "premium" products, it's not just about the product. When people buy, they're buying a "social signal" that they're in a certain clique. It's the same for high-end fashion, which is *slightly* better in quality, but not enough to warrant that price tag.

So I say good luck to them. If you can price yourself at that end of the market, and stay in business (longer than the initial first few months of buzz), that's quite an achievement.

I agree that it's not a cheap meal, but given it's pretty much ready to eat (after 3 mins in boiling water & a bit of olive oil/butter), then it's still a cheaper option than a takeaway curry or pizza.

I have a sneaky suspicion that some people professing amazement at the ?6 cost (for what looks like 2 x portions), wouldn't think twice about spending the same amount on a kebab for 1;)

Damn right id spend ?6 on a kebab over a handful of pasta.

1) it's cooked for me and I can eat it straight away.

2) it's full of salt, fat, and carbs (to fill me up) as well as salad for the healthy bit.

3) it tastes bloody lovely as it is, especially after drinking all day.

for me it's a no-brainer. Kebab wins every time.

    • I am  ill in bed with Covid. It's not that I "can't be bothered" to read things. I am feeling crap and don't have the mental  energy at the moment. I am not "brushing stuff aside and pleading ignorance." I am truthfully saying when I don't presently know enough about something to be able to comment. I have always been very careful to try to  differentiate between fact and opinion in both  my posts and other people's, and I am not clear what your point is. And I am certainly not trying to wind anybody up. This is a forum. If you don't want to respond to my posts, that's up to you. I'm not sure why you feel the need to announce it.
    • @NewWave I know how you feel. Like you, I've lived and spent prolonged periods of time in some pretty crazy places and always thought I could handle a bunch of kids. But, no - they got to me and I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. That's what age does to us.  But I did engage with them, so bear that in mind.  My advice would be to never let anything like that stop you doing the things you love. I'm certainly not going to stop using the park, there's no way they get to take away our cherished spaces!  If you see them, just change tack and keep out of their way. My dog won't even go that way again, so that's that problem solved. (If I see them again, I'm going to keep taking photos from a safe distance).
