Moxtons fishmongers

viscerally I must have ozone. but I live in east Dulwich: I cannot put my face in the sea. Moxons sells fish that is so fresh and well chosen that it evokes ozone. this is not the case with fish from any supermarket I know. is there really anything else to say?

jaywalker I thought I was the only one still on the wine. Seabag, proof in the pudding my love, Sopers been around over a 100 years, Ayres been around 60 odd years, A.J.Farmer been around 60 odd years. The list goes on. Successful businesses last a long long time. Unsuccessful ones don't.

It's a slog, certainly. Then there's the gutting and scaling (with the repeated washings-down of the sink and drainboard -- the scales fly unexpectedly far), and where ever in the fridge to find room for ALL THIS FISH?, and and and...

But every month or so, the desire for a lobster dinner wins out. And a salmon or the like comes home in the boot, alongside the clacking, scrabbling waterbug.

Numbers, have you ever yourself made the Billingsgate trek? (I've never been to Smithfield. Can't think of a reason why, certainly easier to get to.)

I'm with you, Alex. For a special occasion, a trip to Billingsgate is worth it and can save you a pretty penny. It's quite a fun experience actually (but it helps if you're not particularly into sleeping)

We had great service at Moxton's on New Years Eve. Went in looking for caviar. They only had the lumpfish kind left but kindly rang the Clapham store and offered to hold a sturgeon one for us. When asked about the quality and taste difference between lumpfish and sturgeon we were advised they were very similar and given a card about the product. We bought the lumpfish which tasted very good.

EDF gold. Class war, entitlement, Waitrose, Lobster, bloody hell even Caviar and Clapham. Apart from the original poster(fisherman?), mostly from the same old crew. Marvellous.

Alex K - no, I haven't ever made the trek to Billingsgate in all my years in London. I am a novice at cooking fish and am consciously aware of how easily I can ruin quite an expensive dish so I value the advice from my local fishmonger very much. That level of service, quality and expertise does not exist everywhere so I wish people of ED would treasure it.

One place I do miss is the Chinese supermarket in Camberwell Green

It closed down, or did it move elsewhere ?

They sold fish on Sunday too

They closed that one down but kept the one in Peckham open (next to hsbc)

Yeah the Peckham one is the same "chain". They also have branches in Brixton and Croydon. The fish is fresh and good value, although the prep area looks a bit grimy... always puts me off a bit.

There's also a very interesting Chinese supermarket on Rye Lane opposite Asda. No fresh fish, but constant pumping Chinese dance music in the happy hardcore/hi-nrg style.

The one opposite Asda is a good call, small family-run place, good selection of teas etc.

Wing Tai already mentioned but good for Bass/Bream and good selection of fresh herbs and spices galangal/thai basil/turmeric/ etc.

Hi. All our local fishmongers are fairly good...plus we should appreciate what we have got....

Also, Billingsgate is only 5miles away. Opens at 4am-10am tues-sat.20 mins by car. Easy parking. Treat yourself to a scallop and bacon roll!!! I have seen the Moxons people buying the same produce as I do at Billingsgate. The other day when Moxons were buying 4kg of king prawns for ?8/kg, I did wonder what their markup would be.. ?32/kg I believe. Possibly they should smile a bit more When serving...:).

Also re Scallops: On the 23rd dec there were loads of scallops in market. The use by dates were 4th jan.

can buy a kg of scallops for ?22. (44pieces approx). If Moxons did run out I expect it was only thru huge demand...a compliment I guess..and I presume they would have been equally as unhappy to have run out...

How much would you sell them for if you wanted to make your profit - but also cover the costs associated with leasing premises on Lordship Lane, utility costs, staff, insurance, wages & national insurance, various professional costs of running a business etc etc etc?

Your ?10 on top per k must be nearly all profit:). I won't ask about your book-keeping. ....:).

I didn't say you weren't a business. I just said you don't have premises on a high street (with bumped-up rents) and regular staff, so you can charge a lot less hence not a straight 'value' comparison. I don't see what there is to take offence about?

Woodwarde, Dovercourt and Beauval roads have a brand reputation issue relating to their high golf jumper/cello count and a rather sniffy stuffiness. I've dedicated 2 WHOLE YEARS of my life to changing those perceptions and you come out with a line like that...
