Louisa
That may too have happened, the palmy was pretty unpredictable. I loved that about it. Louisa. *Bob*
Were there some rapes as well? They were brilliant too weren't they? The police just laughed them off and it was all forgotten come morning. At least by one party anyway. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/60277-east-dulwich-street-cred/page/7/#findComment-854162 Share on other sites
adonirum
Jah Lush is right. They were nasty as well as "friendly/casual" punch-ups. Remember being in the Uplands Xmas Eve 1975, relatively early in the evening it all kicked off and glass thrown about and knives pulled out. Next thing, a handful of cops from across the road came in, truncheons out and meted out instant justice. We left and went home to watch Queen in concert on the box !!Louisa, would that be Ted the chap that run the veg stall on Northcross Road that you speak of? Louisa
Yes adonirum! I seem to recall he had a brother too? Is he still around? Not seen him in many years. Louisa. Jah Lush
I remember Ted, nice fella but a hopeless barman. Always pissed. I've forgotten his brother's name (possibly Ray, loved jazz) but I'm pretty certain they're both six feet under. Louisa
That's him. Ray. Last time I saw Ted he was sat on a bench in The Village and wasn't looking too great, think he had been ill for a while. I agree, terrible barman but a real lovely genuine person if you got him alone for a chat. There was always a group of about five or six guys at the bar I always had banter with too. Not seen any of them in years either. Louisa. Jah Lush
Ray, I know has definitely passed. I also remember Ted ending up regularly on that bench and in bad shape. I can't imagine him being alive now. He was old even then. I should think he's long gone too. And Keith, the manager at that time passed last year. adonirum
This could be way off the mark with the passing of years, but I think (again) that Ray was his drinking buddy and was the butcher in the old co-op store. DulwichFox
Yes .. Keith was the manager. his dad was Harry Then there was Ted that also worked in the Heber and The Magdala yonks ago. Ted died 2-3 years back and his brother Jack 5-6 years perhaps more. Keith died 3 years or so. I've just lost track of time. Reg was the owner . Bashford ? Peter was the Sunday night DJ. Sue did the food. ?3-4 for a Sunday Roast. There was Little Billy Barrett and Mitch (Xmas Trees at the Green Grocer ( Franco Manca) both long gone. There was a lovely guy Mick.. also passed away. That really was the centre of East Dulwich . The Old Palmy. and people think things are better now. You have no Idea how brilliant ED used to be. Unless you were there Foxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/60277-east-dulwich-street-cred/page/7/#findComment-854186 Share on other sites
KidKruger
Louisa: "I genuinely miss those times."Pretty much sums-up what the last couple of pages have been about.Foxy: "You have no Idea how brilliant ED used to be. Unless you were there".Hold on, it's not exactly difficult to imagine a friendly atmosphere in a pissed-up pub , a bit of banter and a few characters at the bar. This wasn't particular to ED and that's where this jizzing over rose-tinted spectacles has got silly. Everyone knows what a decent local pub can be like, this is England FFS.Just because there's different people around now doesn't mean they're not having as good if not a better time than you had. This persistent argument that everyone else doesn't quite "get it" is a little facile IMO. tfwsoll
'Bromley has all the chains and shops I actually want that are useful!'......well it just goes to show that it's a matter of perspective. I grew up in Bromley when it still had a lot of independent stores ie the old coffee grinders, a wet fish shop, greengrocers. I can't say that I had any particular fondness for it at the time but I avoid it like the plague as it is full of blow in shoppers who only come for the chain stores that have taken over the old independent shops. I avoided it then having had run ins with them before. numbers
"You have no Idea how brilliant ED used to be. Unless you were there"What a condescending, snotty and unpleasant remark to make. All the while condemning those who are out enjoying the 'new trendy' places in ED whilst in same breath telling people "you had to be there" etc. what a load of crap. Anyway completely agree with what Kid Kruger said above much more eloquently than I.There are plenty of people making great memories out and about in ED now. Their experiences aren't less valid than yours. *Bob*
"You have no Idea how brilliant ED used to be. Unless you were there" oh dear"You have no Idea how brilliant being younger used to be. Unless you were there" There you go - fixed that for you. Most people have all sorts of 'brilliant times' when they're younger*. Then the places change, or they do, or usually both. The trick - now listen carefully - is to keep moving; find new things which are different but just as good - and *not* spend the next twenty years 'in those same places', crying into your permanently half empty pint about how much better things were - and thus bringing everyone else down in the process. *(you've forgotten than when you're young you can have a brilliant time in a derelict parking lot with a bottle of cider) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/60277-east-dulwich-street-cred/page/7/#findComment-854213 Share on other sites

DulwichFox
Hang on a bit... People were talking about the Palmy.. About Keith and asking a few questions about some other characters without being criticised or persecuted... .. I (Foxy) filled in a few gaps to jog peoples memories and receive a torrent of abuse from those obviously not there at the time. So I get shit when accused of being negative and get more shit when I post something positive if not sad that all these people have not passed on. Well there are people in East Dulwich who will remember those people. I don't see Ed History getting shit when he talks about the past. So this is a Personal attack by a clique of social bullies who hide behind computer screens against myself and also Louisa. se22cat
Very sorry to hear of Keith's passing he was a fine man. I had my first ever pint in The Palmeston around '86 and of all the ED pubs it was always my favourite, and only 2 mins away from home to boot. We used to drink heavily all around the area, only pub we avoided was The Foresters as it was a place only regulars were welcome at, and a good majority of those regulars looked like pretty mental geezers.
