Marmora Man
Is anyone else pleased at the government's defeat over the question of allowing Gurkha veterans to settle in UK?Given their years of devoted service to the British Army it seems absurd to deny Gurkha veterans the right to live here and use UK services thru' pettifogging bureaucracy and civil service rules.I have been lucky enough to meet some Gurkha soldiers and their children who were at school with mine. Those I have met are charming, hard working and totally loyal to Britain as well as being some of the finest fighting men in the world. Of the children - one is studying medicine, another dentistry and the third economics. Their presence in UK can only benefit the country.Politically GB has made another major error in supporting Phil Woolas and the Home Office over this matter. He is beginning to seem accident prone - always dangerous for a politician. Michael Palaeologus
It was a mean spirited approach and one that seemed to completely miss the general feeling on the matter. The Home Office is clearly twitchy about the numbers involved (a max of what 35,000?). I wonder how many more Gurkhas have been killed in the service of the Crown? citizenED
Can I just get this straight: Ghurkas have always been able to settle in the UK after doing their stint for the British Army and now vicious, evil, xenophobe GB has put a stop to that and will not let any of them in. Ever. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/6138-gurkhas-gordon-brown/#findComment-197082 Share on other sites
RosieH
Pleased at the defeat. Displeased at crowing Cameron whose party did what exactly about the situation when in power? Cunning stunts indeed. Tony.London Suburbs
Delighted for The Gurkha veterans.Embarassing that their case should ever be contested, The Government got this so wrong. They risks their lives for Britain and the whole Country was behind them.Good to hear an inspiring Immigration Story after reading so many negative comments about Britain on other Websites from people who choose to reside here. Moos
I hope I'm not spoiling it for anyone but the concluding paragraph is beautiful:A Downing Street spokesman later added: "We've put the country ?1.4 trillion in debt, government ministers are chin-deep in sleaze and the cops are beating merry hell out of everyone. We just felt that the obvious next step was to tell thousands of heroic soldiers to go fuck themselves." tommy
utter shame for the government - these brave men have fought for, and served this country, they have done nothing to deserve this betrayal by the country they want to live in. Huguenot
Alan's a bit extreme, but does have a point. You can't just let in the Gurkhas, you have to let in the family too, and they're extended. Mebbe 100,000 to 200,000. They may be over in a snap of your fingers. Also there's no evidence the Gurkhas fought for the Crown, more for the cash. Being a mercenary doesn't mean you share the culture, beliefs and secularism of the UK. Quite the opposite if Mark Thatcher's anything to go by.Nepal's got a squiffy little civil war running at the moment with fundamentalist Maoists. You would be daft to imagine that the convictions of the combatants evaporate when faced with McDonalds. It may of course all be fine, but it would be unreasonable to think that's a given. mockney piers
Huguenot, how utterly mean spirited of you, I can only assume AD was being tongue in cheek. It may be worth noting that our armed forces are under staffed and recruitment is at rock bottom, so if anything offering a stake in this society that the Nepalese, Fijians et al that this country is increasingly dependent on and are fighting for, may just be sensible pragmatic incentive. This was such a political miscalculation by this government who had little to gain but so much political capital to lose. Just goes to highlight their general levels of incompetence really.
