what's your best ever opening film sequence?

mine is Ray Winston lying by that pool in the hills behind Malaga, not a care in the world, he's escaped it all,

and... bang... the film starts

and all backed up with Peaches by the Stanglers...

genius

British films rock(tu) (excuse pun, just couldn't quite resist)

ps could not find video clip of opening sequence so hope these two will bring back sweet memories

love you East Dulwich

oh yes, Annasfield, brilliant...

and I am crazy about the animated graphics/title sequence of Casino Royale...

really wonderful piece, clever and beautiful...

and that's always a good starting point for anything...

Yes CC - Great stuff by Kingsley, great clip - I did not watch all of the Bruges clip as I have not seen the film yet. But to contrast Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast with the sensible withdrawn accountant in Schindlers List shows the breath of his abilities but sexy beast was perhaps his best role - really convincing, almost scary.

Perhaps Brendan Gleeson is Ireland's version of Ray Winstone.

If the opening sequence of The (original) Italian Job doesn't fill you with Joie De Vivre then nothing, surely, will..

The film starts with a driver's-eye view of a Lamborghini Miura driving through the Italian Alps as the titles roll. Following the car as it negotiates the turns at high speed, the scenery is cut off when the car enters the darkness of a tunnel and subsequently explodes. The viewpoint changes to the other end of the tunnel, where the remains of the ill-fated Lamborghini are pulled from the tunnel, wrapped around the front of a bulldozer.

Gorgeous views of The Italian Alps, a great car and the wondrous sound of Matt Monro singing "On Days Like These"......

    • Just a quick post to say that my restaurant reviews column is now one year old. There are 45 reviews here - mostly of local places (some sadly now defunct, others thriving). There are a couple of recipes from a period when I couldn't afford to eat out, a couple of moans about my health when I couldn't eat out on doctor's orders and a couple of reviews beyond our manor. But the main thing is that it is a free, useful guide to local dining and, I hope, an entertaining read. You can, of course, pay to subscribe or follow for free to get the reviews directly into your inbox as I don't want to spam EDF with every review (doctor says I'm not allowed spam anyway). The pictures below come from my two most popular reviews - Persepolis (new spin-off opening soon) and Norbert's, a great addition to SE22. Please have a read and please consider subscribing. Did I mention you can subscribe for free?   https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/
    • I'd like to recommend Andy - came out very last minute to help us with a rental property that was having plumbing issues. We couldn't source the problem but Andy was able to find it / fix it easily & took the stress out of the problem. We have booked him again to put in a new bath for us now too as we were so happy with this work.    Lovely fella - thoroughly recommend using! Andy's number is 07983 688 451
