The Flying Pig Update

Recommended Posts

It has been a while since we posted on the East Dulwich Forum, to which I apologise profusely, but we are keen to have any feedback from the great east dulwich community.

We have a few new and exciting things happening here, one of which is a new floor, which might not be much for some, but I am loving it.

Plus, if you want to have a gathering of friends for a fun night out, then we will help you along the way. If you book a table for 10 or more people (10 or more have to arrive on the night) and we will start the celebrations off with a bottle of prosecco or a round of tequila shots.

More things are on the horizon, such as a meet the brewer night with great local breweries. So keep posted and support the little guys that make great brews.

Can we book for less than 10 yet - I've come a few times and never been able to get a table - not prepared to make the trek to places that are too full of themselves to provide proper customer service to have to trek somewhere else when you can't sit down....especially annoying at the flying pig as all the tables are for 4 but filled with couples....

Strange, Cedges... I've never had a problem getting a seat/table.

I love having a place close to home where I can try a wide range of different beers, but would prefer a bigger selection around the ?5 (and below) mark rather than the ?6 mark.. maybe that means having more cask lines at the expense of keg?

Maybe it's time to stop advertising it as a bbq joint too? I know that was the original idea but it's no longer representative of the menu.

I will have a chat with my chefs and we will re-jig our menu so it reflects more of a bbq theme as I am aware that we need to get some of the old gems back on, such as the beef ribs and brisket.

As for the prices of the beer I am doing my best to get the prices down, but these brewers don't like to be cheap.

If either the brisket OR beef ribs are back on I'll be there in a shot!

Beer prices... I understand that small batch craft beer is expensive. But (for reasons I don't fully understand) cask is always a lot cheaper than keg, so maybe if you sacrificed a couple of your keg lines for a couple of extra cask lines, it would seem a bit less wallet busting.

Hi Jeremy,

I will think about getting in a couple more cask lines. The only problem with doing that, is that cask only has a shelf life of 3-7 days once it has been vented. At the minute there is always at least one barrel that goes on the turn half way through the barrel. So if I get more lines in the chance of throwing more beer down the drain hurts me deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep inside. I cannot even bare to think about it.

Hi Mark,

Sounds like you had the unfiltered Camden Pils, it is a lovely brew.

  • 2 months later...
I had my birthday party here last Saturday and it was a really relaxed evening and easy to organise with the venue. The staff were really attentive and they threw in a free bottle of prosecco too. Food was delicious and perfect for sharing amongst a large group of people arriving at different times.
My feedback is... I like the Flying Pig because they usually play good music and are not afraid to play it loud in the front bar area. They've got a decent sound system unlike some of the other pubs in the area. It's nice to sit at the front, have a few decent beers and listen to some good tunes.

Have to say my feedback is the opposite! Went there for a meal and my only complaint was the music was too loud, if you don't want to have a conversation with the person sitting on the same table as you then its fine - its personal preference of course as you have demonstrated

when I was there last a few weeks ago on a Saturday night the music was exactly why we moved on - the music was all from the 80s - Bryan Adams summer of 69 etc - I don't know who was in charge of the music but really.....get yourself a decent DJ or something

yes - and it was too loud.

Sounds like we were there at the same time, was quite an odd mix of music. It was a bit of shame as sitting out on a sunny evening would have been quite nice.

Yeah just for the record when I've been I've not heard cheesy 80's or 90's music! I probably wouldn't have stuck around if it was...

Some of the tunes were a bit cheese but they had quite an eclectic mix... Soul, blues, indie, reggae etc. I've shazam'd some decent artists down there! I don't go that often so maybe it depends on time of day or who's on shift.

I appreciate a lot of people probably don't like it or think it's too loud. I just feel it's the only place that plays music quite loud and on a decent sound system and I like that. Also if you sit further down at the tables it's a lot quieter.

And the beers good too!

    • In what way? Maybe it just felt more intelligent and considered coming directly after Question Time, which was a barely watchable bun fight.
    • Yes, all this. Totally Sephiroth. The electorate wants to see transformation overnight. That's not possible. But what is possible is leading with the right comms strategy, which isn't cutting through. As I've said before, messaging matters more now than policy, that's the only way to bring the electorate with you. And I worry that that's how Reform's going to get into power.  And the media LOVES Reform.
    • “There was an excellent discussion on Newscast last night between the BBC Political Editor, the director of the IFS and the director of More In Common - all highly intelligent people with no party political agenda ” I would call this “generous”   Labour should never have made that tax promise because, as with - duh - Brexit, it’s pretending the real world doesn’t exist now. I blame Labour in no small part for this delusion. But the electorate need to cop on as well.  They think they can have everything they want without responsibilities, costs or attachments. The media encourage this  Labour do need to raise taxes. The country needs it.  Now, exactly how it’s done remains to be seen. But if people are just going to go around going “la la laffer curve. Liars! String em up! Vote someone else” then they just aren’t serious people reckoning with the problem yes Labour are more than a year into their term, but after 14 years of what the Tories  did? Whoever takes over, has a major problem
    • Messaging, messaging, messaging. That's all it boils down to. There are only so many fiscal policies out there, and they're there for the taking, no matter which party you're in. I hate to say it, but Farage gets it right every time. Even when Reform reneges on fiscal policy, it does it with enough confidence and candidness that no one is wringing their hands. Instead, they're quietly admired for their pragmatism. Strangely, it's exactly the same as Labour has done, with its manifesto reverse on income tax, but it's going to bomb.  Blaming the Tories / Brexit / Covid / Putin ... none of it washes with the public anymore  - it wants to be sold a vision of the future, not reminded of the disasters of the past. Labour put itself on the back foot with its 'the tories fucked it all up' stance right at the beginning of its tenure.  All Lammy had to do (as with Reeves and Raynor etc) was say 'mea culpa. We've made a mistake, we'll fix it. Sorry guys, we're on it'. But instead it's 'nothing to see here / it's someone else's fault / I was buying a suit / hadn't been briefed yet'.  And, of course, the press smells blood, which never helps.  Oh! And Reeve's speech on Wednesday was so drab and predictable that even the journalists at the press conference couldn't really be arsed to come up with any challenging questions.
