I had this comment from someone last week:

"Oh East Dulwich... I hear it's the Sante Fe of South east London !"

....perhaps slightly over the top but nice to hear !

Generally people have heard positive things about ED - what responses have you had ?

They usually dredge up some half-remembered thing about Damilola Taylor, or the 5 minutes of Ross Kemp on Gangs they watched the other night from my past experience.

They usually live somewhere like Homerton themselves and don't appreciate the irony.

I too get, oh you mean Peckham.

Or - that North London thing that they think the river is about 15 miles wide and so anywhere in South London is miles away.

Occasionally people think it's somewhere in the country (Kent/Surrey?) but I used to get that loads when I lived in Camberwell, "Oh in leafy Surrey" which a lot of people think is Camberley I guess

yeah i tell them i bought my gaff in 97 for practically fuckall, and now its worth shitloads.

actually i don,t, i tell them ed was a bit of a shithole in the 90,s when i first moved in but its better now if a little bit poncy in parts.

Question asked by fellow passaengers on a cruise who were wearing football shirts.....when they didnt know where East Dulwich was I said near Peckham.......

"and what football team do you support then?" they asked....."MILLWALL"!!!! says I

"AWWW they smashed up our new stadium"

LOL magic!!!!

Also get the I'd never live somewhere that doesn't have a tube. Generally followed by some explanation of why they'd never live that far out of London. Then they seem shocked at it being zone 2 but still think it's too far out.

Do you tell them 'well there's Peckham, Peckham and Peckham" and then explain the difference, esp the part about the Bellenden Conservation Area! Or the Goose Green Triangle. Is there any other estate agent lingo I've forgotten?

"Where do you live?"

"East Dulwich"

"Oh, where's that? Kent?"

"No, South London"

"What's the nearest tube station?"

"There's no tube actually"

"Is it actually in London, or Surrey? Or Kent?"

"It's in London. Near Peckham and Camberwell".

"Oh... sounds nice..."

    • My memory, admittedly not very reliable these days, places the shop on the block on the left hand side just before Burgess Park going towards Camberwell. Have also found a reference to Franklins Antiques being located at 157 Camberwell Road which is on that block. This is a screen shot obtained from Google maps of that address which accords with my memory except the entrance door was on the right hand side, where the grey door is, rather than in the centre.

    • Anyone upgraded their TV for Christmas?! I'm looking for a smallish Smart TV I can use with earbuds. Not more than 56cm high and  25cm deep. A 26" one used to fit.  Thanks!
