Oh calm down. 'Tis a terrible tradgedy and let's be fair, the East Dulwich Forum broke this horrible story, regardless of which thread. The poor Camberwell Forum still has not a word. It has made world news yet poor Camberwell folks haven't got a clue.

I'm grateful the EDF told me what was going on before anyone and I live not far from the scene!

We all know that Camberwell isn't East Dulwich - thanks for the reminder.

However, this is one of the most devastating fires in London that I can remember - 3 young children dying? Can't remember one as bad as that before in London. And it happened on our (i.e. ED's) doorstep.

Frankly, I think it's pretty shocking that it was moved from the main forum.

I fear it is you who is being arrogant.

To suggest the "main" forum is more important, because it is about things in East Dulwich, is just silly. The story has simply been filed appropriately. No one filing folder is more important than the other. There is no "main" forum.

Repeating details of the tradgedy doesn't make you more humane. What a silly argument.

I absolutely agree with Sherwick.

I think ED is serviced by the same council executives that service Camberwell and that is in fact the point, have you thought about any of the other social housing estates around ED or have you wiped them from your mind people.

...here's an extract from the Independents blog

"many southwark council high rise blocks have very rudimentary fire systems. no sprinklers, no alarms, no emergency lighting etc. in our block John Kennedy House some fire doors are missing and others are badly defective. Cllr Stanton sends his sympathy but we need Southwark Council to provide the very best level of safety for all residents. Hawkstone Estate (Southwark) residents are shocked by the tragedy at Havil Street. Our hearts go out to residents at Havil Street with our deepest sympathy for their loss. At the same time we fear for our own safety. Fires do happen in Southwark high rise and we try our best to stop BBQ's on balconies and roofs although the Council are pretty useless on that in our area. Also bulk refuse continues to pile up as the Council cut back on collections. When a T&RA has to call in the local Borough Fire Commander to get improvements and enforcement there is something really wrong. Jerry Hewitt, Secretary Hawkstone Tenants & Residents Association."

The problem here is this forum is very big now and it needs to recognise that fact; we have all contributed to that.

Yer TT big fireballs really boring.

and as for

"it may not make sense to you but that's the way this place has been run for the past 3 odd years and it works."

It's not true hoof foot, it's actually changed, some weird ED liberal morality has crept into the main section, people are being scolded left right and centre, it's on message or out of the section !

Now tell me your house in Tuscany , which locale is it in and i'll tell you wether it's Tuscany proper or some poor out of the main section relative.

Much love

All For Fun & Nun

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Jealousy becomes you. But just to make you feel better dickhead, I've sold my house in a very beautiful part of Tuscany and may even have to move to Nunhead now. I just hope I don't become as hateful and spiteful as your good self now that I'm poor.

Well done AFN for turning a thread about a tragic fire, in to another chance to use the same old lines about ED, and the EDF. And then to start getting nasty to someone for picking you up on it. Class.

Just no need for it, especially not on here.

For my part by the way, I agree that this thread could have stayed in the main section, where there is more serious discussion. It wouldn't have been the first non ED specific thread to have stayed there, and given the subject, I don't think it would have hurt.

Umm ,last few posts all seem a bit off topic.

Just reading in paper that people not being allowed back into their homes in Lakanal House.

How awful for them ,fire bad enough and now they're going to have to cope with not being allowed back .

Or will the police let them return to collect stuff ?

I guess Southwark must have a team dealing with this emergency, wonder how they're coping ,providing practical support etc?

Latest information on incident at Lakanal House

Incident

The Sceaux Gardens Estate is located in Camberwell and was built in the 1960's. Lakanal House, where the fire broke out, is a maisonette block. Residents in the estate come from a variety of backgrounds and are of a wide range of ages, including children and the elderly.

The fire started on Friday afternoon in Lakanal House and the tragic consequences were:

Six fatalities - including three children

15 people were taken to hospital, including a fireman.

Approx 175 people have been placed in temporary accommodation or have been asked to move in with family or friends until it is deemed safe to return to their homes.

Services to affected residents

The council has a range of services to offer to those affected by this tragedy, including counselling, support with funeral arrangements and housing needs. This will mean that managers across the council will be called upon to put emergency plans into action.

How the council responded to this emergency

The emergency plan went into action immediately, with officers reporting into work on Friday evening and working through the weekend to provide assistance in this very difficult circumstances to those affected.

So far we've assisted approximately 175 people at our rest centre, set up on Bushey Hill Rd, and continue to offer support such as providing accommodation, as well as other practical things such as finance and clothing.

Our community wardens and housing officers have already begun visiting other flats on the estate to educate tenants about fire safety, to reiterate the offer of a free smoke alarm and to check for any potential hazards.

We're now also contacting all other London boroughs to find out how many blocks similar to Lanakal House they may have and we will want to share all relevant findings of the investigation with them.

Next steps

Police and fire services are currently investigating how the fire started and spread across the block.

Funeral arrangements and donations

Funeral or memorial arrangements are not yet known, however when confirmed these will be coordinated through the Mayor's office.

Chief executive Annie Shepperd, who was also working through the weekend, said:

"These are very tragic circumstances and we still have a lot of work to do over the coming days and weeks to support those families affected.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of staff who've worked through the weekend, on such short notice and under very demanding circumstances, to put the needs of residents first".

Book of condolence

A book of condolence for the tragic victims for the fire in Camberwell is now open in Southwark Town Hall. All members of the public and staff are welcome to come to the Town Hall on Peckham Road, and sign the book, which will later be passed on to the families.

Useful numbers

Anyone who has concerns about relatives or friends who were living in Lakanal House should contact the Metropolitan Police on special number 0300 123 1212.

Anyone who requires assistance from the council should contact 0207 525 5000.

Alan you also have to give credit for the East Dulwich Forum breaking this story and providing more helpful information and comments than anyone in Camberwell did. Regardless of 'where' it was posted, people found it and it was helpful. No one in Camberwell has been as helpful, or quick. I, for one, am grateful.

    • Exactly what I said, that Corbyn's group of univeristy politics far-left back benchers would have been a disaster during Covid if they had won the election. Here you go:  BBC News - Ex-union boss McCluskey took private jet flights arranged by building firm, report finds https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp3kgg55410o The 2019 result was considered one of the worst in living memory for Labour, not only for big swing of seats away from them but because they lost a large number of the Red-wall seats- generational Labour seats. Why? Because as Alan Johnson put it so succinctly: "Corbyn couldn't lead the working class out of a paper bag"! https://youtu.be/JikhuJjM1VM?si=oHhP6rTq4hqvYyBC
    • Agreed and in the meantime its "joe public" who has to pay through higher prices. We're talking all over the shop from food to insurance and everything in between.  And to add insult to injury they "hurt " their own voters/supporters through the actions they have taken. Sadly it gets to a stage where you start thinking about leaving London and even exiting the UK for good, but where to go????? Sad times now and ahead for at least the next 4yrs, hence why Govt and Local Authorities need to cut spending on all but essential services.  An immediate saving, all managerial and executive salaries cannot exceed and frozen at £50K Do away with the Mayor of London, the GLA and all the hanging on organisations, plus do away with borough mayors and the teams that serve them. All added beauracracy that can be dispensed with and will save £££££'s
    • The minimum wage hikes on top of the NICs increases have also caused vast swathes of unemployment.
    • Exactly - a snap election will make things even worse. Jazzer - say you get a 'new' administration tomorrow, you're still left with the same treasury, the same civil servants, the same OBR, the same think-tanks and advisors (many labour advisors are cross-party, Gauke for eg). The options are the same, no matter who's in power. Labour hasn't even changed the Tories' fiscal rules - the parties are virtually economically aligned these days.  But Reeves made a mistake in trying too hard, too early to make some seismic changes in her first budget as a big 'we're here and we're going to fix this mess, Labour to the rescue' kind of thing . They shone such a big light on the black hole that their only option was to try to fix it overnight. It was a comms clusterfuck.  They'd perhaps have done better sticking to Sunak's quiet, cautious approach, but they knew the gullible public was expecting an 24-hour turnaround miracle.  The NIC hikes are a disaster, I think they'll be reversed soon and enough and they'll keep trying till they find something that sticks.
