I just wanted to let all you lovely, kind people of east dulwich kno.w that Jed,the old English sheep dog, died on friday the 21st.Many of you might not know his name but would would have known who he was as he was a familiar sight walking around the local area with the old man who is my dad.We are both missing him very much as he was such a gentle, loving animal. We are now thinking of giving a home to a couple of rescue cats.

That's sad, Karen. My thoughts are with you.

There's no really ceremony for people to celebrate a dog's life.

Though I recall in Barcelona they have a 'pet ceremony' in the churches every year, where everyone brings their pets along. A kind of mass pet blessing. Or pet blessing mass. Which is nice.

The rescue cats sounds like a great idea.

That's terribly sad news.... I've bumped into your dad and Jed a few times. He was indeed a lovely dog. and I always thought their companionship a heartwarming sight to hold.

I wish your dad luck in homing some rescue cats - there was an article only this week but how desperately over-crowded Battersea Cats is at the moment. So a terrific idea ....and I hope we will still see your dad out walking.

Please dont forget the Celia Hammond Animal Trust if you do decide get cats. We are absolutely desperate for homes, on top of it being kitten season, our Hastings branch recently had to take in around 60 Persians, and we at Lewisham have just taken in 55 grey cats from one house. Give us a call on 020 8694 6545 and check out our website - www.celiahammond.org which shows only a fraction of the cats waiting for homes.

    • Ah sorry, it was comedy.
    • I have never used AI in my life. It's just notes from my forthcoming monograph on light industry in Dulwich and Camberwell 1879-1946 (dates chosen for obvious reasons).
    • Thank you, this really made me chuckle. It's like you met my brother as he would be the one taking more than his share. Plus the 'pikey' chutney is a winner. Unusual as in can't be identified??? Sadly I'm not the host otherwise I would definitely do that I regularly shop in the Cheese Block and am a fan. But as people have pointed out, there is no cheese shop that charges less based on bulk, so Aldi unusual cheeses may be what the familam receive! Yay, so I can get discounted mouse nibbled cheese still! Oooo, now I do love a Stinking Bishop. It actually offends my stepmum by it's stinkiness but luckily she is not one of the attendees at this particular gathering.  This is blooming genius. It's actually my partner who has the biggest issue with buying in plastic so I will have to hide the wrappers from him!
