Shepards in Dulwich Village to become a Sainsbury's?

Can you actually imagine the Dulwich College Estate leasing premises to a 99p Shop? I suppose that the answer to this is (in the words of the motto of Private Eyes' St Cakes School) "quis paget, entrat".

In any case why all the fuss about the closure of Shepherd's? It isn't an independent since it's part of a chain, albeit much smaller of course than Sainsbury's

Even though it was part of Londis, Shepherd's did not feel like a chain - although agree with views that its range of goods were hit and miss. I rarely used it - odd pint of milk and bread, that sort of thing. The deli counter was good when I have used it.

But how this will work as a Sainsburys Local. It seems far too small compared with any Local that I have been in. I guess that once Martin's has been put out of business then they can knock through?

And although I am biting my tongue while I say this, do, do insist that this store fits into the feel of the Village. Please avoid ending up with that disgusting brown and orange logo. The brown is an unpleasant choice, the orange too in your face and the combination unfathomable. If nothing else - that would be a god send. I'm no great eye for design I have to say, but that colour combo certainly manages to look an eyesore anywhere, although marginally better than Poundland. Well maybe not. On reflection, wouldn't they look great sitting next to each other?

Ye Olde Village Tucke Shoppe (sweet shop) was where Romeo Jones is and the barbers was an electrical goods shop called Fordhams.

I live in walking distance to tbe new proposed sainsbury and I do think it's a shame. There is a good sized sainsbury at the top of Lordship Lane, again in walking distance. I just don't feel we need this facility in the village. It will affect the newsagents, it will affect the wine merchant, it may affect the shop opposite if they sell birthday cards for example. It will affect the look of the village and ultimately it doesn't support an independent high street. It's a shame.

I blame DE for putting rents so high it makes it impossible for independents to locate here. Gail's should have been a William Rose but they couldn't afford it, so we got an over prices artisan cafe instead.. Cause we so needed 4 cafes in the village...

Everyone does know the pub is due to open next year? Lots of comments we need a pub.. We do have one its just being refurbished!

    • Everyone just hypes their area.  You need to find someone who has moved away from the area, or owns houses in all these areas(!), for an unbiased view. FWIW there are loads of families living on the smarter roads off Lordship Lane and plenty of 1,800 sq ft after side-return/loft-conversion with kids in the private and state primaries/secondaries.  If you want 1,800sq ft before conversion with big garden then you are better off looking at WD, Village or the area near Aquarius Golf Club (Marmora Road etc).  If your kids are at private schools you have plenty of options.
    • Even with a loft and kitchen conversion, the houses in Ulverscroft Road are relatively small, and to the best of my knowledge none of them have large gardens. Some of them have had ground floor extensions which leave them with hardly any  garden at all, just a very small sitting space. I don't know about Fellbrigg, but certainly some of the Crystal Palace Road houses are bigger, with bigger gardens.
