This financial year Crystal Palace Road will be extensively renewed. This will be a painful protracted experience rebuilding the road including the pavement. This road was selected as being in the poorest condition in southern Southwark. Every year Southwakr officers make a formal assessment and we spent circa ?4->5M on road and lamp post maintenace. Effectiveyl a huge backlog of repairs going back 40 years which we can't fix overnight. It'll take a round 15-20 to catch up.

Hope that puts a little context. The resident on CPR should have received a letter from council officers.

As a CP Rd resident I welcome the refurb work, but a couple of points-

We received no notification about the work (nor did our neighbours). Even a sign put up in the road informing residents, and all those who use CP Rd as a rat-run, about the impending disruption would have been useful.

Then, yesterday morning a large stone slab in our front path (actually the threshold between our path and the pavement, but inside our front gate and on our property) lifted and cracked into several pieces when a JCB was ripping up the old tarmac pavement. These cracked pieces now wobble underfoot and as a result my four year old tripped over and fell when returning from nursery in the afternoon (no injury, but it could have been nasty). This morning on the way out I asked the workmen for the broken pieces to be made level and stable when they're laying the new paving slabs. They agreed at the time, but who knows? It'll be interesting to see what state my path and the pavement will be in when I return this evening.

Hi Muley,

Sorry about no advance notice and explanation about the works.

Standard practice for Southwark Council is to deliver a letter telling everyone what is going on and why.

No explanation why wasn't produced for these extensive works.

I'm not sure if its worse now to deliver such a letter or not?

I did actually get a letter about the replacement of the pavement - there was also a number to call for any enquiries 020 8636 8822 taking you to Conway who are the contractors. I called them because my mains water has been lost under tarmac from previous work - they told me to go out and speak to the workmen when thye get my end of the street and ask them to ensure they make the water mains visible. When they do get round to re-commencing the work, I will pop out, offer them a cuppa and ask them to! It all sounds pretty good, I just hope the get round to doing the whole street.

Hi James, thanks for the response.

On your earlier posting you said that Southwark intend to rebuild CP Rd, including the pavement. If the road is to be resurfaced then a letter informing residents when the work is scheduled would still be very useful- there would be issues like parking and vehicle access to consider, as well as local traffic implications when the busy early morning CP Rd rat-run is closed off.

Husbandjim, it is worth having a word with the workmen when they get to you- I did, and they levelled and cemented the paving stone mentioned in my previous post, and even rebuilt our neighbours brick wall which fell down when the JCB pulled up the old tarmac.

    • Hi. I hope everyone is well. I’m just wondering if anyone in the East Dulwich area has a working VHS/DVD Combi unit that records from VHS to DVD.  Or if anyone is willing to allow me to borrow or lend it for a time until I get all my videos transferred over. I am looking for a few on eBay but either they do not have the recording function or they are just too expensive.  If anyone can help I would be so grateful.  My current one which is a Sharp make started recording fine after years of not being used, then all of a sudden it stopped and hasn’t worked since. When I put a tape in and try, the machine shuts down, and the play button on the remote seems stuck. Thank you to anyone in advance that would be so kind enough to help xx
    • A quick update - my InPost parcels are being accepted sporadically at Barry's, but only one at a time and every few days, after many refusals - one was refused SEVEN times over about ten days - and several phone calls. As a comparison, I had a message from Yodel that a parcel that was going to Barry's is being delivered to another nearby store, which is interesting...
    • The "Community Benefits" are documented on P12-16 of the Consultation Document. Basically unsubstantiated estimates that it benefits local businesses, claims that it provides "opportunities" for local food traders, businesses & people (the term "opportunities" being meaningless - I have opportunities to win the lottery) without any details, facts or figures, and discounted tickets for local residents (which unsurprisingly seldom sell out). The only direct financial benefit to the Park is a £1000 "Biodiversity Fund" and an undisclosed amount for an "Environmental Impact Fee" - looking at how it was spent this year (flower beds in the playground & Sexby garden) I suspect it would be a similarly small figure. The actual site hire fee - claimed as "commercially sensitive" and therefore undisclosed - is spent on: • Funding the council’s free events programme and Cultural Celebrations Fund • Subsidised fees for community events in the borough • Off-setting the running costs of the Events service, which supports the delivery of the free community events programme  Again, no details given, just vague concepts - can anyone name any of these free & subsidised community events? Or what the "Cultural Celebrations Fund" is or does? It doesn't really sound like any of it is worth  the disturbance, restrictions, noise, litter, environmental damage and negative impact on wildlife in our Park.
