woofmarkthedog
-------------------------------------------------------Nay..errrrI agree with what *Bob* wrote in general. It feels like the drawing room need a fire lit in there to get a bit of warmth & you can still smell the new paint. Moos
A bit gloomy there, Mockers, I still pop into the Lounge most days for a quick hiya, and it usually makes me smile.Iaineasy, the idea of the invigilator was just to ask someone to ensure that threads stay on topic, as with any formal debate. All the rooms of the EDF are moderated to take out posts that are offensive or duplications or whatever, just usually quietly. And hugs? Really? You're that undiscriminating? Keef
Oh Piers, I felt I was stabbing you in the heart by starting this, glad to hear you more or less agree. I think that we as users should take it upon ourselves to try and keep a thread on track in the lounge if it is a good topic. It's only been a month, so maybe the Drawing Room needs a bit longer, but I suspect it will remain much the same. *Bob*
With the exception of a limited number of more serious-minded posters (and the exception of a few threads which are on particularly serious subjects), what often keeps the rest coming back for more is the potential for spat, debacle, flaming rows, fiasco and egg on faces. That's why The Open University will only ever have a limited audience share. mockney piers
I like to think there can still be a purpose for it. It has been unusually flamey in some threads but I actually think a couple of them were actually pretty good. Keith, the offer still stands, indeedif anybody feels like they'd like a crack at the whip of the chair and feel they could do some proactive (god I hate that word but it sort of fits here) change then do pease PM me. I have enormous respect and sympathy for the current chair. Dropped in at the deep end with noone really knowing what the remit was they've go e for a light touch approach to give the room err room to develop it's own personality, but it's about time for the changeover anyway and perhaps someone might like a go at shaping it themselves?Anyone .... Moos
Well fair enough. It's just that I wouldn't want to be hugged by someone who would hug anyone. But each to his own. paragon
For what it's worth I like the Drawing Room. Often in the lounge threads would be disrupted and messed with, off-topic and going down alleys. As a long-time predominant lurker I like following the threads in the Drawing Room. I think it is good to have the option - if the person wants the debate to remain on-track and "serious" then put it in the Drawing Room. If not then put it in the lounge. Fair play to whoever volunteers to help out and as other people have said it is early doors at the moment. OutOfFocus
I have slightly mixed feelings about this - before the Drawing Room was formed it was clear to me that there needed to be some seperation between the extremes of the Peckham Fire thread and the trivia such as song game and word association (both types of thread are valid but they didn't sit well together). - I felt the Drawing Room was a good idea when it started - I havent felt the confidence to start new threads on it (not sure my topics are serious enough!) - Keef's suggestion of leaving most of the lounge alone but removing the trivia threads to a "super lounge" (have I paraphrased this correctly) may have been a way forward. My feeling is we should continue with the Drawing Room now it is here. But perhaps lighten the concept of seriousness a bit and see how that goes.(edited for clarity and typos) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/7897-drawing-room-yay-or-nay/page/2/#findComment-246139 Share on other sites
Moos
It may be that when a non-ED topic arises on which a lot of people feel particularly seriously it will take flight. *Bob*
The more likely outcome, should another incident like the Peckham Fire occur, would be that six well-informed people in The Boring Room would solemnly contribute to an in-depth treatise on the intricacies of fire and building regulations in the latter half of the 20th century, whilst everyone else argued about whether it should be in the 'general issues' section or not. Perhaps it's time to finally let go of the 'General Issues / East Dulwich specific' bugbear and instead consider 'general issues' to also include issues that are generally of interest to East Dulwich, even if outside of the postcode. So, eg - ..Major incident close enough to home which everyone probably has an opinion on = in. ..Nunhead = out. Tony.London Suburbs
My heart filled with joy when I saw there was going to be a new Forum on the EDF,seriously moderated, quite rightly, by a Chairperson.Lets be clear here, the Drawing Room(DR) is for serious people who like to discuss serious issues, moderated seriously by a Chairperson..It is not a place for trivia, diversion and most certainly NOT mirth. In my opinion there's far too much "mirth" in life, generally, and most certainly on EDF at times. In life, as in the EDF, we need more discipline and that discipline should start on The Drawing Room.If some don't like the strict regime there then they should try living in The Taliban or sign up for National Service. All forums should have an equivalent of a serious space, which should be moderated, rigidly, by a Chairperson.More Chairpeople moderating more Sites, more seriously, can only make the World a more serious and thus better place imdo.In conclusion, there's plenty of places for mirth, but the EDF DR is not one of them.If someone doesn't like The "DR" they should be removed forcibly, if necessary, by one of these Chairpeople. sophiesofa
I like the drawing room, but you do have to be in the right frame of mind to go in there. I'm not very eloquent so I do find it a bit intimidating. I quite like the chairs frequency of posts. What I'm unclear on is where boring questions should go. For example I posted a very boring question about pensions in the wanted section because I just thought it was far too uninteresting to be in the lounge. I think there are enough rooms already so I don't think anymore should be added because it reduces the chances of stumbling across something of interest. I don't know why I have posted this because I have no solution to propose. I would just like to say that I love the forum, so thank you admin and team for all your hard work.
