i,ve just returned from a long weekend in munich and feck me what a wonderful place, spent 3 days eating meat and drinking from steins, tried as many local brews as possible but i have drank probably the best beer i have ever tasted called hacker pschorr. now being an irishman i consider my self a bit of an expert on various types of beer and have consumed manys a different brew in order to make my mind up but i have to say without doubt that hacker pschorr now occupies no 1 spot in the spadetownboy league of beers. whats your all time no 1 beer ever.

I like lager generally and there's a lot of good ones around but I find they all have characters and certain situations when they taste best:

Kingfisher with an Indian

Stella from the tap in Springers on East Dulwich Grove. It has real French flavour and is very cold.

Peroni has just started appearing on tap all over ED and is a change from the heavy stuff that normally flows from bar taps.

Budvar has a very soapy distinctive taste - great at home with dinner.

Murphys in Irish country pubs.

Very cold litres of Maou by the Med in Ibiza.

I grew up with Abbott Ale, but it's too strong for me these days, really it's a posher, bitter equivalent of wife-beater for me, perhaps lady-beater?

There's a heather beer that Oddbins used to do that was pretty amazing, but I just love trying real ales. Hoopers do guests, but I'm often to be found lurking around the Market Porter that have a superb throughput of guest ales of varying flavours and quality.

And agreed, Germans are past masters at the art, but they're different rather than intrinsically better than English Ale.

Lagers can be good too, quite partial to the dryer asian version, buddha jazz do a comprehensive selection in bottles, but your average lager on tap in pubs is really pretty dire!

So no particular favourite, variety being the spice of life and all that.

Too many to mention. I like a good pint of Guinness and love trying out different real ales. They usually have a beer festival in the Dog during the summer with half a dozen different guest ales on tap each week, including lighter summer bitters and ales. Favourites at the moment though include old staples like Harveys Best and Timothy Taylor's Landord, others I like are Adnams, Abbot Ale, Theakstons Old Peculiar, Fullers ESP and Wadsworths 6X.

Lager I only tend to drink in the summer when it's hot these days. Most draft lagers I find fairly insipid but a good pint of Stella Artois, Kingfisher or Cobra with a curry is fine with me and when it comes to cans I love Red Stripe.

No idea what my favourite real ale is, as whenever I enjoy one, I tend to have several pints, and can't remember what it was called the next day.

Used to drink nothing but Guinness, but these days I'm more a a lager man. In the CPT I always drink Grolsch, so guess I'd call that my top choice. Enjoy cans of Red Stripe and Heineken, bottles of Budvar (NOT BUDWEISER!!!!!!!!).

Can't stomach the likes of Carlsberg, Carling or Fosters, just watery gassy crap that always gives me hicups :-S

Agree with Brendan though.

God you do talk such nonsense Louisa.

At the moment we're going through a golden age of independent brewing, of amazing variety and quality. You just need the gumption to go out and look for it rather than sit there saying bah humbug it was better in the old days.

*agree fully about lager in pubs, though there are wonderful ones from central europe, spain, south america, asia etc, usually in bottles)

mmm white beer. Yep forgot to mention belgium, the holy land of beer.

Used to go to a place in Amsterdam when I lived there called Gollem which served hundreds of the things, each in their correct glass with correct storage and pour.

As they regularly were in the 7-12% bracket you could be very wonky when you re-emerged outside.

I generally drink grolsch, or krone, but I do like real ale, never remember which ones I like though. However, I do think a top is very, very wrong. Girly even. Men don't drink it. Only fools. Odd people. *shudders* errrr. top. Who'd drink it?. Pussy boy.

I forgot my password.

    • Hmmm, millions of animals are killed each year to eat in this country.  10,000 animals (maybe many more) reared to be eaten by exotic pets, dissected by students, experimented on by cosmetic and medical companies.  Why is this any different? Unless you have a vegan lifestyle most of us aren't in a position to judge.  I've not eaten meat for years, try not to buy leather and other animal products as much as possible but don't read every label, and have to live with the fact that for every female chick bred to (unaturally) lay eggs for me to eat, there will be male that is likely top be slaughtered, ditto for the cow/milk machines - again unnatural. I wasn't aware that there was this sort of market, but there must be a demand for it and doubt if it is breaking any sort of law. Happy to be proved wrong on anything and everything.
    • I don't know how spoillable food can be used as evidence in whatever imaginary CSI scenario you are imagining.  And yes, three times. One purchase was me, others were my partner. We don't check in with each other before buying meat. Twice we wrote it off as incidental. But now at three times it seems like a trend.   So the shop will be hearing from me. Though they won't ever see me again that's for sure.  I'd be happy to field any other questions you may have Sue. Your opinion really matters to me.
    • If you thought they were off, would it not have been a good idea to have kept them rather than throwing them away, as evidence for Environmental Health or whoever? Or indeed the shop? And do you mean this is the third time you have bought chicken from the same shop which has been off? Have you told the shop? Why did you buy it again if you have twice previously had chicken from there which was off? Have I misunderstood?
    • I found this post after we just had to throw away £14 of chicken thighs from Dugard in HH, and probably for the 3rd time. They were roasted thoroughly within an hour of purchase. But they came out of the oven smelling very woofy.  We couldn't take a single bite, they were clearly off. Pizza for dinner it is then. Very disappointing.
