Adventure bar - East Dulwich (Lounged when no longer about same)
annaj replied to James's topic in The Lounge
Oh, how disappointing kidda that your post wasn't aimed at me. I was feeling quite cantankerous and hoping for a good forum fight to lift a very dull day* I suppose the forum can come across as a bit self important. I think it's partly that people can be quite frank in their opinions (that whole safety of anonimity thing), partly because it feels like such a community that you can forget that not everyone is on here and partly, as has been discussed countless times, because written word is so easily misinterpreted** so people get offended more easily and discussions become more heated. And after that, surely the longest sentence posted for some time, I'd better get back to my dull day. *this is a joke **see above example of potentially misunderstandable comment. -

kidda, I wasn't going to get back into this, but since you've directly quoted one of my posts, and since I'm unbleievably bored today, I will. First, if you're going to quote posts then at least read them properly first. What I said was that I doubt Toby is sitting in a darkened room drinking gin. In other words I was saying the same thing you were, that I don't see any reason why Toby would care what's said on here as long as his bar is full. As for the rest of what you've said, well, I can be cantankerous when I'm in the mood and I am sometimes a killjoy and I'm definitely not a "flashkid", but I don't think that has anything to do with why I don't like this particular bar. I don't hate Adventure. I didn't go there determined to hate it and I don't resent it. I just happened not to like it very much. That's allowed isn't it? Or are you really saying that we all have to like the same things? Ok, so assuming I'm allowed my opinion; I don't like the bar and so probably won't go there again, but as I've already said I respect that lots of people do and it will probably remain full and popular. As it happens I've only been to Liquorish a handful of times and never much liked it, but the night I tried Adventure I also thought I'd give Liquorish another try (under the terrible influence of certain other forumites who wanted a nightcap). In Adventure I had a "Grande Champagne" - listed as their alternative to a Champagne Classic. It was prosecco (there's a small note at the bottom of the "Champagne" cocktail page that says that all the cocktails are made with prosecco) with a spoonful of white sugar (no sugar cubes on opening night) and a splash of Cherry liquor. It was barely fizzy, sickly sweet and mostly tasted like Tizer. In Liquorish, for a whole 50p more, I had a delcious Champange Classic, made with champange. So, whilst I'm not saying I love Liquorish and I'll always go there, in that fairly direct comparison Liquorish did a lot better. Feel free to have a drink to the EDF when you're next there, or better still come to the Duke tomorrow night and have a drink with some of the EDF, you might be pleasantly surprised... -

Thank you. Is eloquently the word of the day? ;-) -

I think what it comes down to is that those of us who didn't like it, and have said so on here (some politely and constructively, some not so much) are simply not Adventure's target market. As Keef said, if the bar is busy with people who do like it, why would Toby come back and try and persuade people who don't like it and who he doesn't need? I don't see myself going there again, but I don't feel it needs defending or that I need convincing. There's plenty of room in East Dulwich for me and it to co-exist without bothering each other. It's worth remembering that, while the forum is a great resource and much loved by the people who use it, it is only an internet forum. Somehow I doubt that Toby is sitting in a darkened room, with an empty bottle of gin, sobbing noisily and obsessing about how to win over the EDF. -
Oh georgia, that brought tears to my eyes. I feel so sorry for her!

Ok, I know this was a while ago, but I've only just caught up with this thread (because I've been out having fun all day not working or anything) and as a shift-working doctor I have to object. I find plenty of time to read and post, because of my irregular lifestyle, not despite it. It's a small point, but that is the second time in a couple of days that someone has fallen back on poor old shift workers to win their arguement and I don't like being spoken for. I do agree that the forum is hardly a random cross-section of the population and may well not be representative, but I also don't think it's a closed "in-crowd". To get back on topic, I'm not totally anti any of the things that were listed really and I did go in with an open mind last night, but I didn't like the bar much. Like Ally, I might have liked it better 10 years ago, but it just felt a bit self-conscious and trying too hard for me. Mr Ben, was it your cab we crossed the road in front of last night? -

What Mikese22 said.... But it think I'd put the effort mark higher. 9/10 probably - they were really trying. And I recovered in Liquorish with a champagne classic. -
On the latest "I broke the law, because I think I'm special, and got caught and want to whinge about it" thread... Naughty, but funny! And Very good M'am.

I've managed the (nearly) impossible and swapped out of a late shift. I'll be there! :))

New Years Eve at the Clockhouse one year. It was advertised as a fancy dress party and I persuaded all my housemates to go dressed as nativity characters (Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds - all homemade from sheets and tinsel) When we arrived we were the only people in fancy dress, apart from Miles the barman who was dressed as Elvis. Felt very silly, but had a fantastic time!

No, I can exclusively reveal that the new Mr & Mrs Mockney Piers have not yet departed. I bumped into Mockney this morning, just after I bumped into another forumite making his, somewhat tardy, way to work (mentioning no names... Brendan.) Is it weird that I feel like I should be posting this on the famous people thread?

Snow (as I think I've said before, on another thread, but I can't remember which one) Don't know why, and I recognise that it really is irrational, but it makes me really anxious. I can't stand the feeling of it on my skin.

What time have you booked for Mike? I'd really like to come, but I'm working til 8pm. Could be on Lordship Lane by half past easily, is that ok? -
"Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" is a great song - a firm favourite (and disturbingly close to reality for some couples) at karaoke night in the village I grew up in :-$ We seriously considered The Divinyls "I Touch Myself" for our first dance, but thought it might be a bit too much of a shock for the grandparents.

Hhmmm maybe ratty, except that he is most often referred to as "the mate" in the stories. Anyone who does want to try reading it for themselves might want to have a look here Happy reading shipmates!

I say Dull-itch. I'm from Saarf London originally, but mostly grew up in a village near Wotton-under-Edge (WO-un-NUN-dredge) which explains most of my pronouciation anomalies.

*wanders in* *thinks to self "Oh, that's who that cover is by"* *looks around at slumped, drunken bodies, empty bottles, debris and large holes in floor and ceiling* Blimey! It's changed in here. *wanders out*

Well done wee quinnie! I really admire anyone who has the discipline to complete a distance learning course, particularly so sucessfully, it's a huge achievement. The biggest achievement of all is that you have been working form home on your OU course for all this time and only reached 500 posts. That is truely remarkable! xAnna

Anna, be really cautious with tramodol it's strong, fairly sedating and the effects are very variable from person to person. It's what's know as a dissociative analgesic, which means that it doesn't take your pain away so much as make you less aware of it, and sometimes less aware of everything else too. Some people tolerate it very well and find it effective, others get drowsy and disorientated on a small dose. Definitely don't drink while you're taking it and if you've been prescribed a range (ie 1-2 tablets) start with the smallest listed dose until you see how you get on with it. PM me if you want any more info. Anna

Thanks, it was George. I asked him what he thought of the new CPT and his face said it all before he'd said a word!

I had a great time on Friday as usual. Loads of newbies most of whom I didn't get a chance to speak to, but I did meet MsB (great dress!)horsebox and fiskaroo. Also met a few people who's names I've forgotten, particularly Keef's friend who gave me a good honest review of the new CPT ;-) Thanks for the pictures Andrew, I really don't look too bad this time. I think I'm working for the next one, but I'll try and swap my shift. Duke sounds good to me.

So, dulwichdahlia, you registered yesterday and started two slightly odd threads, that could well be connected. To say you obviously have and agenda would be an understatement. If you know of someone commiting fraud, or any other crime, you should report it to the relevent authorities. If you don't know for sure, but are speculating, then this is nothing but gossip and tittle-tattle that could be very damaging.
