  1. I agree that the undertone of many of the negative comments about Rye Lane was rascist and I also agree that many people's lack of knowledge of the 'other' is what fuels this probably unwitting prejudice. I used to hate Peckham because it was the area that the kids on the estate I lived on in Elephant & Castle used to have wars with and my kids had issues with some of the Peckham youts. My shopping area at that time was East Street. But since moving to East Dulwich, I cycle through Peckham every day and Peckham is now my local shopping area. I hardly ever go to Lordship Lane because I don't buy things that have no use and the shops in Peckham sell far more useful stuff than the tarted up crap sold in Lordship Lane.
  2. Why don't you go round to the people who own it and explain that you are really upset about loss of sleep etc. They might decide to listen and give it to someone in the countryside.
  3. I remember some terrifying dolls in Dr Who from the distant mists of my childhood. Did I make that up?
  4. Totally agree with snoozequeen. I've bought chicken, goat and other meat for me and my kids and tripe and bones for my dog from the Rye lane butchers for the past year and a half, It's good value and I've never had any problems with it. I used to buy the same thing from East Street butchers when I lived in Elephant, and similarly have had no problems with it. Just because it's something you are not familiar with or not sold by white people, does not mean it is substandard. You need to climb down from your ivory towers and check it out. If you need a tour guide, me or my kids can be of assistance.
  5. Crystal Palace Road is close to me and my hens. Someone told me that if they smell hens they can fly over and impregnate them. I didn't think they could fly. One of my hens has become broody, I wonder if the big fat cockerel has been out partying with my hens. I wonder if I've been eating little baby chicks rather than unfertilised eggs!
  6. I think maybe this group of users may have been overlooked, but I'm sure they can be encouraged to get involved as the whole thing isn't finished yet, so their views should be able to be listened now that FoGG know about their concerns. I don't think anyone needs to go on the attack, or the defence for that matter, there are more useful ways of communicating!
  7. Mark - they are all primary kids. I think the people who are upset are asking about consultation or consideration for the older kids.
  8. One thing I would like to say about unregulated markets after my visit to Jamaica last month where big corporations pretty much have a free hand to do whatever they like. My BF's mum's electricity bill was $8000 Jamaican dollars for 18 days which is about ?60 and she has two rooms with a light bulb, one tv, two fans, a fridge. a hi-fi and no other electrical items at all. She took the wiring out of all but two of the rooms to try to keep the electricity costs down. It gets dark at about 6:30pm so if you have no light your day is pretty much over. In Jamaica the average wage is about ?27 per week. There are advertising hoardings up all over Jamaica with a cute looking kid saying, "Mummy, if it's wrong to steal, why do we steal electricity?" At ?60 for 18 days, tell me who the thief is please!
  9. "Hey Mr Cock-a-doodle do You better just watch what you do Cos if I don't get my beauty sleep Somethin' bad gonna happen to you" hahaha
  10. Damn, Huguenot you've gone all radical! I'd like to add to your very poetic post that there is a 3rd way, not just to use your vote wisely, but to actually get off your arse and get involved in holding the people we vote in to represent us, to account (or even put yourselves forward to get involved in the decisions that are made).
  11. He's also cutting loads of equality officers positions so looks like his whole commitment to equal opportunities is a bit wobbly.
  12. I'll have a nice cold Leffe please.
  13. Sounds horrible. I thought it was for the hostel at first, but it's accross the road. Isn't there a public meeting soon to hear views about it?
  14. Where and what is the dream machine?
  15. I totally agree with chicknic - I have 4 chickens - all female, so no cock-a-doodle-dooing from my place thank you very much!
  16. Oh yeh, what about The Ministry of Sound. It used to be mad in there in the beginning. I miss Ivory Arch.
  17. Nice thread and of course I agree with MM and the others. ID cards dangerous centralizaton of our data accessed by all and sundry e.g when we purchase something needing ID. Why not stick with passports, driving licences etc. CCTV - it's funny how CCTV evidence that could help someone accused of a crime prove their innocence often seems to disappear. Issues re: who has access and control. Quality often too grainy for good ID and have seen cases where due to false identification of 6'3" client the CPS didn't stop the prosecution even though the victim had described attacker as being about 5'8. Thrown out in court. Reliance on CCTV leads to lazy policing. 42 day detention without charge - well you just have to pray someone doesn't clone your info and get you banged up for 42 days without charge. The drip, drip erosion of our civil liberties scares the crap out of me. How do you think these powers will be used when society starts to suffer serious meltdown due to the catostrophic climate change, scarcity of resources etc facing us in the very near future?
  18. avoid the dove one as it goes streaky and put some body lotion on at first so it spreads better. Don't do your ankles!
  19. Haha - very funny!
  20. Yes sorry, that was Kingston, Jamaica I was talking about, not the leafy suburb of London!
  21. When I was in Kingston (Jamaica) last month I heard what sounded like a helicopter, something I'd heard quite a lot at night, but it was intermittent and in the breaks I could hear 'bap, bap, bap, bap'. I asked my boyfriend if it was someone firing at a helicopter and everyone laughed at me because it was an AK47 and a handgun being fired in some kind of battle a couple of streets away. It went on for about half an hour in the middle of the day. Since then I will add 'anyone I know catching a random bullet' as one of my fears.
  22. I'm dislexic so read it as may!
