  1. Found myself browsing Project Gutenberg stuff in an idle moment and came across a book called Sex (Avoided Subjects Discussed in Plain English). Many anachronistic laughs to be had therein. I particularly liked this bit, as I feel it may offer a glimpse into the author's home life:

    Iams Cats

I reckon our Mog would talk like Su Pollard.
  3. :{o edit: So, doesn't work for surprised moustachioed ones then. Ah well...
  4. Some of us have birthdays in November to get over and done with before we can think about that C word.
  5. I'm with Kel - it all seems a bit quiet this year. For some strange reason people seem reluctant to spend lots of money on sending a few chemicals into the air for a brief, colourful explosion.
  6. ...said TLS, sat in front of his computer.
  7. Haven't seen that much that I've liked in the Onion for a while, but this made me chuckle: http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/black_man_given_nations
  8. That's so awful. So sorry for the family. I just can't imagine how terrible it must be. I feel bad for the driver too - I imagine he'll never forgive himself.
  9. Restaurants will soon be required to say whether tips go to the staff or not. More info: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/victory-in-fight-to-allow-staff-to-keep-diners-tips-989629.html
  10. I fear I shall have to downgrade my lovely Boden-clad children to urchins. Still, at least I'll be able to send 'em up chimneys, or out begging and that.
  11. Too many to mention, but there's always the odd gem that comes to the surface now and again so I keep on coming back.

    Petty Annoyances

"a handy little trick is to always keep a spare car in the garage for such an emergency" Spare car? Garage? Pshaw, I wish.
  13. Just buy different carpet tiles. A single six-foot-square tile would suffice.
  14. Doubt that'd make it past the work firewall. I'll look at home.
  15. I'm getting 404 on that, Mockers.
  16. Perhaps the BBC's spotted its chance to get rid of them and then, after a short while, take them back again on less expensive contracts. Or perhaps I'm just being a cynic.
  17. Jaime Winstone - she's the lead character. Very good I think - just the right mix of vulnerability and toughness. Am enjoying the whole thing very much. I don't watch much telly these days, but if more of it were like this... Slightly uneasy about the running zombies, but at least they can't climb (yet) and are still suitably stupid. Last night's episode was a bit on the short side, but at least I only have to wait until this evening for more.
  18. How dim would you have to be not to recognise the real potential for people to die as a direct result of your shoving a firework through their letterbox? Not sure how it can be seen as anything less than attempted murder - or is that just me overreacting?
  19. I like co-operative insects.
  20. Flickr's pretty good - easy to use and free. Haven't tried panaramio so can't comment.
  21. Just try getting a baked badger though. I've had no luck in four years. They must sell out really quick or something. Edited to keep on topic: I like their bread but wonder whether someone after a loaf of organitastic deli-bread would feel underwhelmed by it.
  22. At primary school we played a version if 'it' (or tag, if you must) where you were only allowed to run along the lines that marked out the netball (I think) court - or is it pitch? Anyway, it was ace.
  23. I want to go back to bed.
  24. Now... What did I come in here for again?
  25. Hm, you're right. What I should have said was: I doubt it's anything to do with my router, and that the problem was at the server end on that occasion. For other people it may be their router, or it may be the server. Horses courses etc.
