Sorry. I like the idea of swift not budging though.

Always go spinning bird, it may be powerful but you'll be too dizzy to administer the coup de grace. By the time you recover hopefully you'll also have recovered your wits and gone back into defensive stance. Avoid hooked chains and decapitation at all times, very easy to execute technically and of course literally.

"If it was so explicit the question would not have arisen. " I thought the starting point was that interpretation was misunderstanding, that you either understood or didn't. So how can any questions arise at all especially as all the facts are in the bible and there is no need for any interpretation at all. Everything is either explicitly there or not. I'm lost. Anyway forgive me from retiring as it's become silly. It feels to me like arguing the interpretation of the armor class modifiers over different editions of AD&D ... I imagine someone who may or may not have been a bit of a nerd at school might say.

I totally agree applespider, that's much more like the Christmas spirit I'd like to see. I'm all for grumbling, nothing wrong with that, it's the barely disguised contemptible anger that evrything in the world isn't perfect that winds me up. It's the equivalent of people jabbing a policeman and saying "I page your wages why aren't you out catching criminals". Anyhoo most of it's gone now so all's well that ends well.

God it makes want to lsoe the will to live reading threads like this. Stockholm functions because it always snows, regularly plummets to -17 and their infrastrcture is geared up for it. We have maybe two days in London in a bad year. The grit buckets are probably gone because they cost money to keep filled and maintain and council tax payers will more regularly bleat about how everything else is wrong, why do they pay their taxes etc etc and our councillors have prioritised the money for other matters. Grin and bear it, leave for work earlier, do sensible things like sturdy walking boots or even chains on your tires and like Nero suggests, go out wih some grit yourself, in a burst of civicmindedness. It'll all be over by Christmas!!

I reluctanty clicked on the thread expecting yet another scroogian diatribe full of bitterness and blame so was quadruply delighted to see your post of thanks laroon, so thanks to you for reminding me that people are basically good. Shame on you atila, bah bloody humbug!!!!

Cruel cruel private eye. Starred clues on the jumbo crimbo crossword are the given answers to questions on dumb Britain. *The Speaker between 1983 and 1992 was Bernard...? (7) I'm guessing Manning?

"As I mused earlier, the problem with reasonable force is that criminals never use it." Notwithstanding that given that any use of force beyond reasonable is criminal makes this statement both circular and tautological, it's also meaningless. As I said I confronted the masked burglar in my house * wakes up, rubs eyes shouts what the fuck* and he just left my house with a laptop to show for his troubles*. He didn't use any force which I suppose fits in with the clarification that burglars don't use reasonable force if they're not using any at all. Anyway inclined to agree wih bob that his is a nonstory. *incidentally laptop belonged to flat mate who managed research teams at a high profile big pharma. I'm still not sure it wasn't industrial espionage.

There's a new series of V? coooooool. This will be a TV adaption too by the bee. Starts december 28th. I loved V, but having seen repeats, it has aged horribly, but it seemed solid enough plot wise, just terrible production wise. Having seen how Battlestar Gallactica improved I could believe good things could come of V. *rubs thighs at thought of Diana and Juliet*

Didn't really know where to put his so I thought a geeky tv thread was as good as anywhere. Anyhoo, just read a preview of the new 'Day of the Triffids'. Is anyone else excited about this? The eighties series was a real formative part of my childhood along with the telly adaption of Hitchikers Guide. Admittedly watching the repeats on BBC3 lately the old one was a bit creaky and those triffids were a bit rubbish (terrified me at the time though) it was still powerful stuff. The new one has a stellar cast including vanessa Redgrave!! I'm quite excited me.

*warning, almost certainly nonsensical phlegm speckled rant warning* What i dont get is that during my time in banking, everytime the bank I worked for effed up it's cost savig strategies and didn't make any money that year even though most desks were doing well, most of the company got it's bonuses taken away from them (ok us, I am bitter). Now the banking industry as a whole screwed up strategy and would probably have collapsed if it wasn't for government intervention. In this country we have very specific institutions who got the strategy wrong and are now effectively public institutions (and coincidentally bought the crappy Dutch one I worked for). Yet they are paying bonuses, whereas other public sector employees have at least a fiver year pay freeze ahead and if ireland is anything to go by pay cuts to look forward to. If they hadn't been bailed out those bonuses wouldn't be being paid because belts would be so tight. Is it fair that now bad debts have been effectively written off (thanks for buying that UK) that the desks are now in rude health that these effectively public sector employees benefit personally to such an extent and out of line with their more traditional public sector comrades?

Oh undoubtedly. Very impressive, doing that in the dark with wooden boards and rope. I doff my hat. But also vandalism. Damn sight more damaging than a banksy on the side of a building.

We discussed this before. Consensus was man made obviously, yes they're pretty but you wouldn't to find one in your field now would you. I used to see them quite often in herts/beds. Always coincidentally in full view of a passing main road (A405 was very popular, can't imagine there are many aliens concerned wih how many admirers will be going between Luton and hitchin)

I wouldn't mind O'Neill in east London. Zolas a lovely chap and breathes football but there's only so many times you can wacth him say 'my players gave everything' as we crash to another defeat we really should have got a result out of, before you think that loyalty and belief in your players is all well and good but the odd hairdryer does work wonders, and MON is reputed to have a pretty scary one in reserve there. I think the reputation Matthew refers to probably comes from the Leicester period and that can often be the only way to get a team with poor resources punching above their weight. I don't watch the SPL, but whilst this very good villa side dont necessarily embody the beautiful game, they are playing far and away the least dull footie of a Villa side in a good long while.

I have to say I love the English stereotypes in Family Guy (chinny or chinless, efete, tweed clad, upper class twits with terrible teeth) cracks me up every time. The Irish fair little better.

It wasn't a penalty, but then they had a legitimate handball penalty shout turned down earlier, so I'm not going to get upset. Would love to have seen him sky the last one though, that would have been very funny.

I know exactl where atila is coming from, but in the first place you eiher got it wrong about Haaland, which is a genuine mistake, but refused to acknowledge it. Or you knew to begin with and that's plain dsingenuous, so also understand MM's frustration. It is naughty and helps perpetuate these falsehoods. It's like the climategate email. By using misfirection it undermines the message that Keane is a thug and a bit of a nasty piece of work, which is true.

We've had quite a few performances where people have said 'as long as you play like that' or 'you're too good to go down' Liverpool and arsenal games sprin to mind among others. Let me assure you that we don't keep playing like that. We've been here before and instinct tells me that this year we're going down. If we get everybody back from injury soon and remain largely injury free for the rest of the season then we'll do it, but again not convinced by that one. Without someone like Tevez to rally the team (for it was vey mug a team effort that kept us up that season) I see us stumbling despondently to relegation. There's never a good time to go down, but if we do I see us more the way of Southampton, Leeds and Forest before them who at least show there's life after doldrums.

Very true. Mind you we have an awful lot of experience of recession, crash and bust here yet miserably failed to make any hay this time around. A good motto for life at any level is never believe your own hype. Brown is a clever man, he can't possibly believe his claims about abolishing boom and bust without a very powerful political ego deluding him. Regardless we're not far behind Ireland in the danger I'd bankruptcy league (Greece current leaders) but at least Ireland really is making tough decisions. With the election camapign unoficially starting in the new year I see a lot of tough talk but no real action (or proposal of action) over and above cosmetic vote winning here. Depressing.

Wow. Quite a game at Charlton.

Obvioulsy that's a lot of settling as the game is tomorrow. Damned mulled cider meddles with your brain!!!

That has to be the nail in the coffin. Hats off to Pompey though, well done. Go on Fulham btw!!! Right settles down for the match let's see if Chelsea can average a goal a minute for that 100 total?
