I saw Murphy a couple of times at Charlton, and he looked like he thought he was too big for the club "I used to play for liverpool you know" attitude was reflected in a very poor work rate. I was under the impression he eventually pulled his socks up a bit though.

"Quite so. What government would dare spend umpteen billion pounds of tax-payers' money on the Olympics and then not have them made available to the widest audience possible?" Totally agree but it wouldn't be the first time this lot got us to pay for something and then mortgaged it off to a bunch of PFI no hopers only for us to have to pay for it again, and then pay for it again when we bail it out or renationalise it. <\rant> But even they might draw the line at selling the coverage off to Sky (fingers crossed).

"Of course schadenfreude may also be appropriate" Oh yeah, loved the whole brown bottle nonsense too.

Indeed there were, but I can't find any sympathy for the fella. Plus Foot & Mouth was all of his own making when he slashed DEFRA's budgets as chancellor and two of the resultant ditched projects were ..err.. flood defence improvements and an urgently needed sewage system repair in a certain diseases research centre that was flagged as being very vulnerable to a leak should there be a flood. 2 + 2 = ? The only reasoning for this high profile visit that makes any sense to me, is that it was organised by ultra-blairites towards the end of their days as a stinking booby trap left for brown and his goons; he either has to go through with it and look bad or downgrade/cancel it thus snubbing an important though repugnant ally. You almost have to respect the creativity if this is the case; whichever way you look at it though, the whole affair reeks.

the daily mash tells it like it is IT'S THE BEHEADINGS I MISS THE MOST, SAYS HOMESICK SAUDI KING KING Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has revealed that he hates to travel because he misses the daily beheadings in the courtyard of his solid gold palace. The King, who arrived in London yesterday to complete his purchase of the British Government, said: "Tyranny is marvellous thing, but it bugger to travel with. "I have to leave behind Rolls Royce toilets and beatings of women. I come to cheap country where women no have to wear large canvas tent." He added: "Next time I bring Hassan the Royal Swordsman and we do some beheadings in lobby of the Dorchester. Yes?" The King, a moderniser who is slowly dragging his country into the 11th century, will be welcomed officially by the Queen. He will then spend the rest of day sitting on a vast silk cushion in the corner of the Throne Room, breaking wind and working his way through a pair of marinated goats. He will spend Wednesday buying Leeds, Bristol, Gateshead and Barbara Windsor. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the King was an honoured guest adding: "You are wise and just and you have the proud genitals of an ox. Please come my lovely friend. See our high-quality killing machines. Fresh today. I give you good price."

I reckon there's a pretty watertight case for it being of national interest, so I can't imagine there won't be BBC coverage, though it'll probably be shown by at least ITV too.

Land & Freedom (Tierra y libertad) at the funeral where they sing the international. Brings a lump to my throat and I confess the room can get quite dusty.

The New Pornographers - Bleeding Heart Show!!! (especially when played by Keef and the ensemble)

Again agreed, I like Union, but League just doesn't do it for me, it has less finesse than Union, well, usually. Better or worse? I can't believe that 3 and a half hours of time outs and adverts interrupted by number of plays is better than 45 minutes a half uninterrupted (or 40 for rugger, or 35 for hurling). If the game's your thing then great, I'm glad for you, but you're not going to persuade me of that.

I moved it to the wanted... area. I also sent you a private message to let you know, with a link to it's new location. If you look near the top of your screen you should see a little blue message saying 'private message' click it to go to the messaging (we call them PMs) area; you have a couple of them as it goes as I also welcomed you to the area and answered one of your queries.

I was stunned to see that during breaks in the baseball, they really do have bad organ music and huge trucks that drive on to the pitch (ground, diamond...whatever), get draped with scantily clad ladies advertising balsa wood and garden shears. I thought it was just the Simpsons taking the p!ss.

"I personally don't want it over here because it's a fcuking boring sh!t game, end of!" Excellent, my sentiments exactly!!! And no, that's not anti-americanism, I got quite into baseball when I was over there last. Also watched USA v England (in the 'soccer') and the local crowd were really enthusiastic, knew their stuff and it was a sell out crowd (and they laughed a lot when we started singing are you scotland in disguise). It's far and away the biggest participation sport out there, but it isn't breaking the mainstream because the networks have no interest in showing it; I guess no big mega deals with GM wanting to be associated with the sport.

Keep your hair on gerry. I quite enjoyed this article as I was curious what the thoughts were on the other side of the pond. http://www.ocregister.com/column/nfl-london-football-1912353-chris-chambers Clearly everyone's allowed a bit of prejudice, as I go back to watching my Benny Hill repeats...

"oh sorry mockers am i disturbing you ?" Not at all, boring me maybe, but you'll be glad to know I always blunder through life in a self sustainable bubble. Aren't I nice though, I found you this terrific, and I think you'll agree, jolly well laid out and usable nunhead forum. And do please come along to a forum drinks if you're going to get all familiar with me Nunners ;-) -
Well I'm hoping we have a new celeb in our midst. Barry Rhode, do you live in Barry Road or were you Jim The Fitness Instructor in the 1973 'classic' Sex Farm aka Frustrated Wives? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0722350/

I rather like the montpellier, but I won't be making the mistake of wanting to watch footy there again. I don't give two hoots for commentary, but it's nice to have the atmosphere, and having music and silent football merely serves to grate. The castle has .. err .. character. You're taking your life in your hands having a pop at the CPT on here ;)

The church was very good at co-opting pagan festivals into their own celebrations; part of a very good PR machine long before that concept even existed as we think of it. Halloween is usually associated originally with the Celtic sahmain feast for the dead, but most pagan cultures had a celebration of this ilk at about the time of the autumn equinox, end of the fertile season and the start of winter, such as the roman feast of Dyonisis. Death and life and renewal, all that malarky. The church used whatever it could find wherever it spread it's tentacles. See also christmas, easter, well pretty much all of them frankly.

Mainly because it's a better forum than other local forums. See also nunhead issues ad nauseum.
