Yes, it seems to be a refuge for all the ThisIsLondon forumites from a couple of years back. Now there was an ugly place indeed!

I've been overwhelmed by nostalgia. An unregistered snorky, a still posting shambles..
-
Absolutely, great idea. Ray, fancy sponsoring it? Winner gets a drink of choice, but only after they've fixed your sound by streamin incomprehensible irish radio over the internet first ;-) Fear&Boozing, fancy teaming up?
-
Ooooooh you're both right, I'll dig in around London Fields.

please tell me we're not using the "Harold Meeker" precedent whereby the second aldwych caller has to bum Christopher Biggins for a fiver. Finchley Road & Frognal.

'Anonymous' building on Upland/CP Road?
mockney piers replied to mlteenie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Everything mlteenie ever wanted to know about anonymous buildings -
Following the invocation of the Burberry Stratagem (cunning move CWALD) I'll preserve standard rules (3rd edition) with Canning Town.

> plus the fact that the heavy drinkers know the bar staff (unique!) You say that, but in most parts I've lived in there's such a crazy turnover of staff that this should-be-no-brainer doesn't happen. There have been one or two big changes to the EDT, George and CPT staffs, but other than that it's pretty static, and pretty local too. How long have the current bunch of lovely aussies been there Keef? 4 years? I'm convinced Inside 72 have some sort of work experience deal with the local sixth forms frankly, I always feel ancient in there.

Agreed, the random 'morning' freaks me out when I go back to the Letch, but I do like it in ED. I nod to the kebab guys as I wander past, know many of the bars' staff by name, keep bumping into forumites and nod to Linda Barker (and maybe look backwards over my shoulder at her too). It's not a clincher, but it adds another dimension to living here that I like, and it was the first place in London that I experienced this; main reason I stayed here.

Meh. I don't think Europe is anywhere near the warfare of fundamentalism vs entrenched atheism as witnessed over the pond. We're much more inclined to agnosticism in the uk. Indeed if I'm not mistaken even the (last) pope accepted that there is no theory better than evolution around, he just saw the hand of god in it (as he is perfectly entitled to do so, I guess if you accept that he's in everything then you're more than likely to see him in, err, everything). Perhaps we could export Dawkins over there, it'll make him happier in the long run. Interestingly enough our debate only ever flirted with religion. Probably because we previously tried to discuss it and it was even more one-sided than that which will forever be known as 'The Reiki Thread'. ie noone argued for, except a half-hearted Keef who was simply pointing out that we're a big bunch of bullies (not without reason though - pun intended).

LOL, I wondered if you were going to make an appearance. I must actually go there one day, I'll dig out a polyester suit specially.

Soooo, no sooner is the message finally getting across that something has to be done, than we're all getting tired of hearing it. Poor us, we really are screwed aren't we.
-
Ooh can we have musical dominoes then? I call* your Dan Hartman on the Streets of Fire and raise you Billy Ocean and Hollywood pals - When The Going Get Tough *yeah yeah, mixing my gaming metaphors.

I was going to say something about long-suffering fans, but Simon got there first, and under the circumstances I shall tiptoe quietly away ....... sorry again

Best Gastropub in London - Time out
mockney piers replied to downsouth's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Totally with you Tracey (I can't believe we have over 55 thousand Tracies registered on here?!). A gastro pub should be a pub with a restaurant. The likes of the rosendale/palmerston want to have their cake and eat it, but it doesn't work. 2 very good examples are the princess (despite it's blimmmin flock wallpaper) and the fox tucked between shoreditch and the city. Proper boozing pubs with crisps downstairs, poncey food upstairs. Fox the better pub, Princess the better food. -
> his mum wouldn't have the cat sorted at the vets because of her catholicism.. WHAT?!?!?! That's bonkers? I'm no expert on the catechisms, but I'm sure the whole contraception thing doesn't extend to cats. And if it does, like you say, whatever happened to though shan't drown things in sacks with bricks in?

I suppose Keegan was better known for his punditry, but yes, it was probably for *that* quote. Anyway, some Keegan classics "They're the second best team in the world and there's no higher praise than that." "If I had a blank piece of paper there'd be five names on it" "England have the best fans in the world and Scotland's fans are second to none." "You can't do better than go away from home and get a draw." "I don't think there's anyone bigger or smaller than Maradona." "The 33 or 34 year olds will be 36 or 37 by the time the next World Cup comes around, if they're not careful." "I know what is around the corner - I just don't know where the corner is." "Chile have three options : they could win or they could lose." "He's using his strength and that is his strength, his strength." "Gary always weighed up his options especially when he had no choice." "The tide is very much in our court now." Thanks goes to Peter Gable who provided me with a list that included some of the above plus the following gems ... "One of his strengths is not heading." "He can't speak Turkey, but you can tell he's delighted." "There'll be no siestas in Madrid tonight." "England can end the millennium as it started - as the greatest football nation in the world." "They compare Steve McManaman to Steve Heighway and he's nothing like him, but I can see why - it's because he's a bit different.." "In some ways, cramp is worse than having a broken leg." "Despite his white boots, he has real pace..." "That would have been a goal if it wasn't saved." "Goalkeepers aren't born today until they're in their late 2Os or 3Os." "The substitute is about to come on - he's a player who was left out of the starting line-up today." "The ref was vertically 15 yards away." "It's like a toaster, the ref's shirt pocket. Every time there's a tackle, up pops a yellow card " "There are two schools of thought on the way the rest of this half is going to develop; everybody's got their own opinion..." "I'd love to be a mole on the wall in the Liverpool dressing room at half-time." "The game has gone rather scrappy as both sides realise they could win this match or lose it." "I'm not disappointed - just disappointed." "I came to Nantes two years ago and it's much the same today, except that it's totally different." "A tremendous strike which hit the defender full on the arm - and it nearly came off." "The good news for Nigeria is that they're two-nil down very early in the game." "That decision, for me, was almost certainly definitely wrong."

He he, did you hear about Screech dancing for nickels as he's destitute now? Oh yeah, remember that android. Canadanians obsess about it. I've a funny feeling it's continued indefinitely a la the bill. It's now "Degrassi Thirtysomething - Whinging About 3-Wheeled Prams" or something.

Having just bought my first copy of mixmag in about 15 years (remembering aciiiiid issue) I had to post this Ecstasy Club - Jesus Loves The Acid Underground Resistance - Final Frontier

Harry's still good for not being one of the 'we gave ourselves a mountain to climb but at the end of the day...' brigade. Best of the last couple of decades? I reckon Strachan edges Keegan, humour over bonkersness.

Glad to hear it (the no issues, not the house price stuff) Yep ED Bulge syndrome is taking hold. Gah! > 2. Position in a depression beneath Denmark, Red > Post, and Forest Hills leaves us strategically > vulnerable to attack. Border defences are > required. very funny. you see santasangre? top people :)
-
I'm sure santa sangre was asking for genuine opinions, not for you lot to parody yourselves people. 1. Community (despite occasional appearances to the contrary) 2. Proximity to the centre (zone 2 and good transport links if you ignore the tube) 3. Proximity to lots of green stuff. 4. Pubs, Bars and food. (not the best area in london, far from being the worst with a good range of options, both in eating and in drinking tastes 5. It's Safe. Against 1. Overpriced. Alan may have an issue with ED, but that doesn't make him wrong; surrounding neighbourhoods are better value and have their own charms (and pitfalls) but well worth considering.

Clearly I'm going to have to use the tags more often ;-)
