Is that like the tree in the forest question? Philosophical mood today huh keef? The CPT did try to go a bit wineponcey* in the past, what went wrong? *wineponce is a noun meaning one who detects nord bones in his wine, I cast no aspersions as to class, race or other factor of the pub and/or it's owners, staff and clientele.

When and why did ED become so poncey?

precisely frisco. I've always thought there was a healthy mix in the area, it IS a pity that there is less of a mix on the high street though. -

Mixes of shops don't just happen, you need something to attract, and if economics won't or isn't then you need an extra pull, which is probably subsidies or attractive rates or something for which...da daaaaa intervention, whether that be local gov't, central gov't or the EU, same biscuit. I must have been thinking of a few articles I've read of the last couple of years Times: "There are now seven London boroughs in which whites are in a minority, up from three in 2001. Brent in northwest London has the highest proportion of non-whites, 69%." Observer:"Government forecasts suggest that immigration on its own will be responsible for half the growth of the British population over the next couple of decades. Whites will be a minority in London by 2010." -

I dunno, this is all sounding a little Enoch Powell to me. London is I think already minority white, if anything is a ghetto then it's probably East Dulwich rather than Peckham. London carries on doing what it's doing it all seems to functioning pretty well to me. There are problem areas, these are sink estates where poverty and deprivation are endemic. It's just as much donw to dreadful planning decisions in the 60s and 70s as much as your perceived ghettoisation. Plus you seem to be proposing government intervention to achieve I'm not sure what. Can you enlighten us further how "both sides [should] make an active effort to integrate"? -

There's a pretty healthy mix at the Lambeth Country Fair in Brockwell Park (tomorrow as it happens) and a mere stonesthrow away. I studied population movements in the US when I was at uni and for the life of me can't really remember much about what I learned. Certainly immigrant ethnics do tend to huddle together as you stick with what you know, get the produce you're familiar with, speak the language etc. Hence why Walworth road has a very west African feel, Brixton a Caribbean feel etc. But we're not nearly as ghettoised as many of the big US cities. You look at the census and ED isn't so different to many other parts of london, but as someone previously pointed out it's about the visibility of that population, and here ED does suffer a bit, which is a pity. Whether it's anything of overriding concern? I'm not sure and it'll take more than speculation on a forum to answer that one, but talk of apartheid seems to me a little hysterical. That's my tuppence worth of musings for what it's worth (about a ha'penny) -
where does the private messages thing appear now?

I couldn't resist anna but I did cheat a bit... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:3ifuxqr5ldke Lauceriani, if you're serious then I'm impressed you came to the forum for help, I wouldn't even be in the house right now, I tend to flee if so much as a wasp enters the room. London zoo isn't a bad call, barring that a policeman? or a very strong tumbler and some cardboard, then shove it in the bath until suchtime as help arrives.

Rudolph Schenker or Karl-Heinz Follmer? The winds of change must have been tough on them if they're resorting to being stowaways? I suggest a nice cup of tea then politely usher them out the door suggesting they might need a bad city night out or a holiday.

I was strafed* by a spitfire this time last year at a barbeque in Loughborough. Really made my day *he didn't actually fire his guns I hasten to add.

Saunters in with enourmous havana Cohiba Robusto. Pours a double Tanqueray Ten, with a large splash of tonic over some ice. Perhaps a little Jane's Addiction next?

Just do it. My mockney sense is telling me there's another thread not so very far away headed there in a not too distant future

It never seems to occur to the any of those on the conveyor belt of change detractors that it's actually the country that's changing. There's not some balance book of ponceyness with some areas waxing with this strange intangible quality, causing other areas to wane. If I head back to Letchworth or to Stoke or any other place I've stumbled through in my life, then Coffee shops and and tat has exploded everywhere. Incomes have risen 24% in real terms since the 70s, disposable incomes by 94%. It's all brought about by cash, and that's everyone, your local lad still living with is mum til he's 30, or the out of town lad who has to borrow from parents for the deposit rather than live rent free. World changing...wwwooOOOOOooooooOOOOooooo who'd have thought it eh. Right, where's my flares, I'm off to listen to some Wolfmother. Doh!!! *edited for unforgivable plural apostrophe's* *edited again to add that also hanging head in shame at having bit, despite advice to CWALD no to* -

Don't do it CWALD, the wriggly worm may look plump, appetising and nutritious, but it's attached to a hook, and that's attached to a reel!! -
Are you guys particularly good at SLiP fielding? *sssshwooooosshhhhhhwwoooosshshhhhhh* *dungggggggg* *sssshwooooosshhhhhhwwoooosshshhhhhh* *ahem* I'll get my coat.

To echo your comment about Andrew Eldrich, I have a friend who's into his wrawk, who spent many years in the states trying to get his career going. As he said, some things can only be in America, you can write a song about driving your Chevy down route 66, it doesn't work when you're driving your Passat to Biggleswade. Equally country couldn't emanate from the CPT, no matter how much better pub culture here is to insalubrious mid-west bars.

I quite often have the veggie fry up with added bacon if I'm not in the mood for snags, black pud etc. Mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, hash browns, bubble, egg and obviously bacon. It's just less heavy, though I usually get a funny look. I've stopped asking for a cup o' char after one too many cappuccinos from charming, pretty eastern europeans lacking colloquialisms. I think eggs is a vegan thing for most, but depends on the individual veggie.

It is a fantastic map. I noticed that ruskin park had what appeared to be a bunch of smallholdings on it along side Denmark hill. All gone now. And I loved the little traffic island atop dog kennel hill, so much nicer than the traffic lights. More roundabouts, less traffic lights I say!!

Good point, I guess the Plough or the Dog are the main candidates
