  1. Mr Pickle has just returned from a walk to Peckham Rye station (half hearted attempt to get to work), to find no trains running and staff at the station saying it's unlikely any will be running for a while yet.
  2. Anyone know what the situation is with trains into London Bridge from Peckham Rye? I know there's none from ED, but wondering if some are making it through that way? Helpfully none of the train company websites are working! Thanks
  3. Nice memories TLS, he obviously made a great impression on you. What a fantastic career he had!
  4. I think maybe that was a typo, and Heidi meant steep hill? There was definitely an old building with "hotel" in big concrete letters on the front of it, which has now been converted to flats, but I'm not sure whether that was the East Dulwich Hotel. That's where you're talking about I think PeckhamRose, just off Lordship Lane to the right (as you're heading down away from the Harvester towards Goose Green). Can't think which road it's off, but maybe Overhill? Certainly around that area somewhere. I'd think that would count as East Dulwich, definitely still an SE22 postcode! It's quite an imposing building, in it's time was obviously quite an impressive hotel.
  5. Another vote for John from Underhill Rd, we always use him to take us to Heathrow, and pick us up on our return. Reliable and a really nice guy.
  6. That Virgin letter is the funniest thing I've read for a long time. Absolutely brilliant!

How very useful!
  8. Well said Halicon! I, for one, took the initial post at face value - a well meant warning to anyone walking alone after dark. It must have been a very scary situation to be in, and hopefully one that won't be repeated.
  9. Happy Australia Day guys :)-D I'm a kiwi, but have had some good times in London celebrating Australia day (any excuse!). Not these days though, small children have put a (temporary) end to my partying days. I'm drooling at the thought of Anzac bickies and Cheezels - yum! Will raise a glass of Aussie red tonight :))
  10. We get them knocking every couple of weeks. Always start with the same "I'm not here to rob you or mug you..." line, have been known to ring our bell as late as 10pm. They're a complete pain, and as the person above has pointed out, they're not actually linked to a charity. Very hard to get rid of at times, although I'm quite good at it now having had them here so often!
  11. We've got ours and the neeps and tatties are at the ready... delicious! Hope you manage to find one (the van on Northcross might be worth a try today?)
  12. JenniferJ, I'd be more worried that someone's taken your recycling home to have a good sift through to find "useful" information :( Hope you don't put name/address info in there without destroying it first? I'm wary, as had a few credit card applications submitted in my name a couple of years back after our recycling bag had obviously been rifled through over night. We now put the bag out first thing in the morning, and are a lot more careful about what we put in it.
  13. There are always loads of them in Peckham Rye Park - they tend to roost for the evening in the tree in the middle of the duck pond, quite an amazing (and noisy) sight!
  14. From what I gathered from speaking to the Never Ending Story owner near to when they closed, the closure had nothing to do with lack of patronage, rather it was a decision to close to concentrate on other ventures. The selection of childrens books in Chener is pretty good, and there are other local options as other posters have already pointed out. Great that you're so passionate about this, but I'm not sure I really understand your motives for your posts (and your increasingly aggressive responses)?
  15. Let me guess, in a few hours time someone else is going to come on and just happen to post a useful link to a website selling wedding gifts?
  16. Between four of us we polished off a tin of Roses in 24 hours. Have just been to Blue Mountain for cake & hot chocolate. I feel very sick already!
  17. I was at Liquorice last Wednesday with a group of friends and there was a really large group of young guys came in. We couldn't really pick their age, between us reckoned anything from 17 to 22... and then realised we were probably just getting old, and the fact that we could be their parents (just, and possibly not legally ;-)) scared us! There were loads of them out on LL too, which made me think it might have been an end of school night out.
  18. Great post Kel. So sorry to hear of your brother's house fire. What age are his kids? I'm about to have a clear out of toys and would be happy to donate some if they'd be useful? They're for baby to around 2 years. Also have loads of baby boy clothes up to about 18 months. Such a horrible thing to have happened, but thank goodness they are all OK. Must be horrible to have lost the cats though, on top of everything else :(
  19. Try the DIY shop down near the roundabout, I'm sure they'd stock them.
  20. We always leave lights on timer when we go away, and have someone come into the house to open/shut curtains etc. I'm sure a "professional" burglar would cotton on to this, but I figure it's best to do all you can to avoid a burglary. Now that we have a cat, any time we're away a lady comes in to feed him morning and night, which gives me peace of mind. So sorry to hear of the OP's break-in, such a horrible thing to have happen.
  21. Ah, but she looked very cute though, that's the main thing ;-) This could be the start of a huge career in showbiz!
  22. Did anyone else see the cycling feature on the lunchtime news today? It was filmed in Balfe's Bikes, quite a decent interview with the owner, and also a few locals - one of whom is my friend and a fellow forumite! Nice to see a local business getting a bit of coverage.
  23. Get yourself off to New Zealand - Twisties are the ultimate cheesy puff snack. And while you're there, Burger Rings are to die for! Nothing in the UK comes close. I've got some in my Christmas box of goodies from Mum, but I'm not sharing!
  24. Another Uplandite here - surely there are others, it's such a long road!
  25. >:D
