How strange... I know the guy you're talking about, but we had a very different experience. Went browsing for curtain fabric, he was really helpful, and he also came round to our house to measure the windows and give advice. We haven't actually bought anything from there yet as he didn't have what we wanted, but I found him to be OK. Very chatty, talked a lot about his little girl when he saw I had young kids. My only comment would be that he was slightly sleazy, but I figured that was just a ploy to sell curtains to the desperate housewives of ED ;-) Makes me worry that if we do go ahead and order curtains from him we'll end up regretting it!? Anyone had a positive experience?

Did anyone else watch the drama unfold last night on Upland Road (yes, I know, I'm a curtain twitcher!). About 11.30pm, heard cries of "get down on the ground... NOW". Looked out to see a policeman putting handcuffs on a guy who was lying on the pavement, head almost in the gutter. Loads more police arrived, including a van to take the guy away. Seemed like they were also looking for someone else, and something had been discarded by the guy before he was arrested as they had lots of evidence bags and were looking under cars along the street. Much more entertaining than Big Brother ;-)

I saw a guy recently (aged about 30) walking along wearing one yellow & one orange croc. Either was asleep when he got dressed or seriously thought he looked good. I really hope it was the former!

Not sure about problems there now, but a year or so ago there was a shooting around that way - from what I remember one of the house had drug connections (on Underhill, in the terraced houses near the new houses). I used to see police there quite often. But since then that particular house looks to have been completely refurbished and sold.

What is the Difference between Australians/Kiwis actually?

To Strawbs it would be "snores veeeeeele", to me "snores vul". That's the difference between Aussies and Kiwis ;-) -

Ditto Brendan's question! -
I met Prince Edwards YEARS ago - he came to my school in New Zealand to award someone a Duke of Edinburgh award (I'm assuming he was in the country for something slightly more important?!). I was 12 at the time, and hatched a plan to sweep him off his feet and marry him. When time came to speak to him I lost the ability to communicate, plan was abandoned. Thank goodness - what was I thinking?! Prince Charles used to come to my office in London quite often for Princes Trust related activities. Nobody really did anything special for him, it was quite relaxed really (other than the drama involved with his arrival and departure and the police etc. blocking the road!).

@Strawbs... your post made me laugh! Same applies to kiwis - when I first moved to the UK we always threw mad house parties in our (rented) flat full of the landlord's furniture. Thought nothing of it. Generally didn't know half the people that turned up and sometimes it took weeks to get rid of guests who decided to invite themselves to stay while trying to find work/accomodation etc. Things are different these days, and yep, I've thrown my backpack! Having moved to the UK 8 years ago with one backpack and no ties I now have a house full of stuff and 2 kids in tow. How things have changed.

I have to agree with you Bawdy-nan. A few years ago I did one of the correspondence courses (purely for interest's sake, with no intention of ever making a career out of it) and was amazed that the college concerned felt that people studying that particular course would be capable of advising people after completing it. It did make me wonder just how many people out there are advising members of the public in a "professional" capacity having done a crash course in nutrition. Scary. Don't get me wrong, it was an interesting course, met my needs perfectly - but far too basic to be considered an adequate grounding for someone then going on to use it as a basis for a career. It's definitely worth being very careful, make sure you see someone with a "proper" qualification.

There was a house party going on last night in the vicinity of Upland/Underhill/Dunstans - sounded like fun!

Proud Gardeners announce their new arrivals

Michael - alas no... wish I had though as it was an absolute classic! Oh the plans we had for that pear... -

Our pear and apple trees are both flourishing this year - last year we didn't get any apples and only 1 pear (which looked lovely, but when the momentous day came to pick it it transpired some kind of beast had burrowed it's way into the reverse side, so it was basically a hollow shell!). Also have raspberries waging war on the bottom of my garden, no idea where they've come from, but lovely all the same. However my attempt to grow chives in a pot (from seeds) failed miserably... how can that be?!?! -
Brilliant Buggie... nice to know that the praise is actually reaching the people that deserve it. Maybe you were one of the lovely staff I met on my visits!

Just wanted to add to this again... had to take new baby Pickle (1.5 weeks old at the time) to kids A&E a week or so ago after being referred by the midwife and GP. I can't praise the place highly enough! I'd never experienced the kids section before, but what a fantastic team - we were seen straight away, nurses & healthcare assistants (apologies if not the correct term) absolutely lovely, paed fantastic. They were all super professional, very reassuring, and made an otherwise stressful experience quite pleasant! Baby Pickle needed a follow up consultation a few days later, and the paed told me what time he'd be working and just to arrive and ask to see him rather than having to book an appointment through the wards. Sure enough, when I arrived at the specified time he was there, remembered us and once again was fantastic. Well done Kings!

Good luck with whatever comes next for you Reuben. Your hard work with the baby club is much appreciated, here's hoping it continues without you!

The Southern Electric guy was in Upland Road last night. Very hard to get rid of, kept insisting that he "needed" to come inside and read our meters, and take my details. Also very hard to get a straight answer from - when he first rang the bell I asked him if he was here to try and get us to change suppliers, to which he answered no. So I kept asking him exactly what it was he wanted, and he didn't seem to be able to give me a straight answer - just kept showing me his ID card (which didn't really tell me anything) and claiming he was an "agent" for the area. Finally he did admit that he was aiming to get me to switch (apparently I pay ?60 a month more than my neighbours, based on....?) at which point I managed to get rid of him and shut the door. Not really what I needed at 7pm while trying to get 2 kids to bed!

That's great news! It has seemed like such a shame to see the playground area unused in recent weeks when the sun has been shining. Fingers crossed for the 14th.

'Liquorish' opens during the day for families!
Pickle replied to mandijs's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Interesting take on things there Superberry! Firstly... from speaking to the owner of Liquorish, they weren't previously open during the day. So no established "non baby" clientele to annoy. In fact they're marketing the opening directly at Mums and children, that's the choice they've made, not one that's being forced on them by people with kids. Secondly... why assume that the Mums in there are drinking alcohol? Or breastfeeding for that matter? Personally I had an orange juice as am feeding a small baby. Some of the other Mums in there at the time had significantly older children, so I doubt that the milk testing kit would be necessary. Why am I not surprised that as soon as there's a positive thread regarding a nice new place for local Mums to go to there's someone posting negatives?! -

Yep, we were in there too this afternoon - just happened to be walking past and saw the sign outside. Very well done, owner seemed really enthusiastic and a nice friendly guy too. Nice selection of toys, kept my little boy entertained for long enough for Mr Pickle and I to enjoy a drink. Well done Liquorish! -
I agree with Kristy - have a chat to Reuben. I know at one point he was talking about setting up a Dad & baby group on a Saturday or Sunday at the pub, which Mr Pickle was keen to head along to... but I'm not sure if it's actually been started up yet. I think the usual Friday Plough Babies has stopped for the summer, so it may be that he's waiting until later in the year to set up the Dads group.

Forest Hill Road Coffee Shop - Now Open
Pickle replied to demery's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I visited again yesterday with Mr Pickle and baby Pickles in tow (don't worry, older baby was very well behaved and tiny baby asleep!) - once again a really nice experience. I'm addicted to the chocolate brownies, and the hot chocolate was lovely too. Mr Pickle tried the gooey chocolate cake, very nice! Highly recommended to anyone who still hasn't tried it out. -
Oh Brother! (Charley from BB8 outside The Black Cherry)

From memory I think she was the one who described herself as an "IT" girl around Lewisham. Lucky girl! -

I finally made it in to the new cafe yesterday - can highly recommend their chocolate brownies! The place had a nice feel to it, and the two women working there were really friendly. Had a chat and they said they've been busy which is great. Good luck to them! -
Re: Problems with Virgin Media internet connection?
Pickle replied to Browncoffee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I saw a Virgin Media man fiddling with wires in a box at the end of St Aiden's Rd earlier this morning - perhaps they're trying to fix the problems? -
We love Spice Republic too. Food is always great, and they're more than willing to cater for your taste - it's never a hassle for them to make something to order.
