flats for sale - Demark Hill Estate - Why?
Vik replied to Freddy1929's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
In this case the flats were never council 'flats.'They used to be laundry rooms in the attic space of each of the blocks which have been refurbished and as Jeremy has stated are being sold to fund the refurbishment of the rest of the estate. -
Very much agree with the comments about feeling out of the loop once they start secondary school. My son is in year 8 at Charter and I am more than happy with the communication I have had with the school, aside from the usual texts and letters, he was having a problem with another boy in his class which was causing him some upset, I called the school in the morning and explained the situation to someone in the office, they then passed a message to the behaviour officer, who spoke my son during the school day, I then got a call from his tutor after school to tell me what they were doing to rectify the problem. By the next day all was sorted and my son is now his happy self again. I'm sorry you are having difficulties, perhaps give the school a call when they go back and ask for the tutor to call you back as soon as they can, if you don't have any luck I would probably then ask to speak to the head of year. Good luck.

Trains screeching on Copleston Road
Vik replied to danielgriffiths's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
To clarify - We are talking about the ED-Peckham Rye line? The bend to the rear of Quorn Road/Ivanhoe/Copleston? This is a passenger line - I have lived here long enough to have noticed what trains are going passed my windows every few minutes, how often have you seen goods trains running through ED station? You haven't! The Denmark Hill-Peckham Rye-Nunhead etc line is a goods line, that'll be the one that passes Warwick Gardens. The occasional maintenance train goes by on this line, mostly at night, referred to by us as the 'spy train' due to the fact that it seems to have a flood light on it, this does not have any trucks/carriages (thereby not a goods train as it is not carrying any goods.) These trains don't tend to screech, just make a low 'rumble.' The screechers are deffo passenger trains, though I'm not sure what differentiates them from the quiet ones as they all look the same to the un-trained eye. As a PP said not sure if there has been an improvement as our windows have been mostly closed, hope so though, some of them were so bad they could drown out conversations! Spring on it's way though, so it won't be long before we're woken by the sounds of angle grinders on the lines at 3 in the morning! -

I take it you mean the odd maintenance train? Because there are no goods trains on this line. -

Help! Need schools advice for Beauval Road
Vik replied to JS33's topic in The Family Room Discussion
With regards to secondary schools, I'd say you're pretty much guaranteed a place in Charter or Kingsdale which are both great schools (Charter from personal experience.) -

I do often wonder about the history of mine and my mums homes, I would love to know the original layout of our Victorian terrace, it's been messed with beyond all recognition over the years and it's a pretty unique shape. little things make me wonder about previous residents - the old coal hole and fireplaces, the big butler sink in the basement. The flat I grew up in is in Honor Oak near the ED boarder and a Victorian conversion in a huge building. We were told it used to be a school but I think* I found it to have been designed to be apartments from day one, ignorant of me I know but I didn't even know 'flats' were built in Victorian times. *I say 'think' as I tried to find it in the 1901 census a few years back but it appears not to have been numbered then but named so I can't be sure it was the right building.

Goose green primary school, how long on the waiting list?
Vik replied to bouhbouh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Have you tried contacting the school directly? They should be able to let you know where you stand. If the current year one classes are at maximum capacity, unfortunately they wouldn't be able to offer a place unless someone leaves. Have you thought of applying to other local schools? Where abouts are you? -
Anyone have any recommendations for a good, reasonably priced local hairdressers for a 12 year old boy, he currently has long hair and would like it cut and styled, he still wants to keep some length so maybe not your run of the mill barbers as in our experience they just want to chop it all off and this is not what he wants. (12 year olds eh?!) We used to go to GM's when he was younger but they have quoted ?25 - is it just me or is this a lot of money for a childs cut?

Will be watching this thread with interest as have a nearly 4 year old girl and 14 week old baby to amuse - we tend to go to softplay at the Pulse or local parks but it would be good to find some new things to do - I find most of the groups are aimed at toddlers. -
