Not from what I understand, anyway. ETA: My understanding was that they were going to block off part of the middle so that demonstrators could not gather near the entrance to Downing Street, and also could not walk down Whitehall directly between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square, but would have to go a longer way round. -

I resisted single use lenses on cost grounds. I wish I had changed years ago. They are a revelation :) They aren't actually as expensive as I imagined when you take into account that they don't need any cleaning or other liquids, and they are a lot more convenient. Also whatever brand you use, you can get it a lot cheaper online (exactly the same prescription, obviously). However, now I am retired I do wear glasses more, especially as they have those lenses that go dark in the sun so you don't need to keep taking sunglasses on and off! I have my eyes checked yearly (for contact lens purposes) at the Institute of Optometry (between the Elephant and Borough).

I understand part of Downing Street is being closed off by police, so it won't be possible to get directly to Parliament Square from Trafalgar Square, or vice versa? ETA: Sorry, obviously I meant Whitehall! -

Keep up the good work. 😂 What??? I said I didn't like the shop front but I expected they would do well. How is that trolling, exactly?

Plus ca change, etc etc ....

Oh great, I was about to change back to DMC as I thought it had improved. I moved practice a while ago, but have realised it is not great having to get a taxi there and back when you are quite ill :( -

I haven't been in yet, because I've been put off by the shopfront. Brown background, olde worlde spelling, squiggly fonts and gold coloured lamps don't do it for me :( I guess they had no choice in this, as it's a franchise so presumably the shopfront can't be altered to fit in with the location. Sorry to hear the sweets are very expensive. Hope and Greenwood were expensive, but their sweets always seemed like a treat, and the packaging for their chocolate boxes was beautiful, with red ribbons which they hand tied for you. They were great for gifts, and you could choose chocolates to suit the recipient's taste. Anyway, this seems like a different offering altogether to Hope and Greenwood. I expect they will do well and I'm sure they will manage without my custom :)) ETA: I think M&S's chocolates are mostly nicely packaged, and good value, especially at the lower price ranges. I have actually bought some specifically to reuse the box. Velvetblueberry, do you have some connection with the new sweetshop? ETA: Also, what is the "overpriced tat" you mention on Lordship Lane?

Sorry to hear this, but not surprised, sadly. Given there are no other bars near there it might have done well, but unless it got enough business from nearby residents it couldn't have thrived, because it didn't seem sufficiently appealing to be a destination for others. We went once. It was OK, but there was no food when we went, and there wasn't any atmosphere. Bit chicken and egg, as there was nobody else in there to create the atmosphere. Hope they haven't lost too much money on it :(

But when Franco Manca came to East Dulwich, didn't they have just one other branch in Brixton?

Presumably the franchisee (is that a word?) didn't want the evidence there for all to see that he tried to get volunteers working in his business for free, but I don't see that as a reason to delete the whole thread. Personally I think the shop front is an eyesore. Looks more suited to some hideous Olde Worlde tourist Shoppe Centre. Didn't want to post that elsewhere but hopefully nobody will see it here. I miss Hope and Greenwood. At least their shop was tasteful.
