  1. A public seating area? Will that be a permanent seating area? Where will it be situated??
  2. I see contents insurance as a necessity, not a luxury, particularly in London or any big city, where there are likely to be more thieves than in the country. You can go online on a comparison site and put in your details and get quotes for insurance. I think? Normally you would also be covered for items stolen outside the home (eg on public transport) depending on exactly what's included in the policy. iPhones and iMacs, however - they are what I would class as luxuries, unless they've dropped in price considerably since the last time I looked :)) Also - how did they slip the latch? Does your door not have a mortice lock? My house insurer insists on that, and I would have thought your landlord's would. If it does, and he hasn't provided one, then surely he is the one to blame here? Though I wouldn't have thought his insurance would cover your personal possessions anyway, though I may be wrong.
  3. I was at the bus stop outside the old police station/new school at the bottom of Whateley Road a few weeks back, and a blind man (with a white stick) staggered off a bus with another man, both shouting at each other and the blind man clutching a can. I think it was in the afternoon, certainly in the daytime. I thought they were having a row, but I think they were friends :)) They continued to reel about and shout at each other at the bus stop. The blind man (and possibly his friend, I can't remember) then got on another bus going in the same direction, so I'm not sure if they were chucked off the first bus :)) He got off that bus at the stop before the Horniman stop and headed off in the direction of the Horniman. I got off at the same stop and headed off in the other direction :) Does that sound like the same guy? I thought it was all a bit odd.

While tree holes and cliffs may have comprised their historic nesting resource, the almost complete removal of ancient forest from their nesting range has resulted in adaptation to man-made sites. Swifts build their nests of air-borne material caught in flight, bonded with their saliva, in suitable buildings hollows, such as under tiles, in gaps beneath window sills, and most typically under eaves and within gables.

I don't mean to rub salt into the wound, and of course I'm sorry your things were stolen, but - I can't help wondering why you have no insurance for "treasured items" and why your hard drive is "irreplaceable"? Do you not back up your hard drive? I use Carbonite, which backs everything up automatically, but there are many other options, I'm sure. It's not just in case of theft, it also enables you to retrieve some or all of your stuff in case of computer meltdown or human error. It saved my bacon when I once accidentally permanently deleted some important files. Anyway, I hope you get your things back!
  6. Thank you, bels123, that's very useful to know.

I am not completely stupid :)) :)) :))

  9. Last Thursday lunchtime (about twenty to one) a Thames Water van was parked outside the primary school in Whateley Road. The engine was running and the driver was sitting inside apparently either doing paperwork or on his phone. I was in a hurry but I did get the registration number. On my way back, I noticed that he had been parked exactly next to a large sign outside the school asking people to consider the children and turn off their engines. I couldn't see this earlier as I was on the other side of the road, and he was parked in front of the sign. I am wondering what Thames Water's policy is on this, whether they instruct drivers to turn their engines off, and whether I should report him. What do people think? I am considering making up some flyers to just hand to people or put on their windscreens, so that I don't have to actually talk to them and lay myself open to verbal abuse.

Fingers crossed.
  12. I feel exactly the same, AnyaJoeli. And I've been met with similar abuse.
  13. I would open the letters and see who the sender is. I was once very grateful when someone did that to a Christmas card I had sent (before the days of social media etc). They phoned me and told me the person had died, which I otherwise would probably never have found out.
  14. Yep. You can click on somebody's name and all their past posts will come up. Can be useful in some cases. Sorry for your bad experience. I would be furious.
  15. Growing things? An allotment? Music? Hope you feel better soon!

  18. Sorry Tiddles, but many of the planted areas are not "lovely" compared to previous years. Go and have a look at the well maintained planted beds in the walled garden at Brockwell Park They are what I would describe as "lovely", not the weedy uncared for beds in Peckham Rye Park :( With just one or two exceptions eg the formal beds at the main entrance.

  20. Or how about "England", by Broadcaster? Might be a bit hard to sing, though :))
  21. The whole park is a mess apart from the formal beds at the main entrance.
  22. You can put the vehicle reg number into the ULEZ website and it will tell you whether or not the vehicle is compliant. Mine isn't. I had hoped there would be some exemption, or at least a discount, for residents, but it seems not. And no system for modifications for "normal" cars, either. Goodbye car :(

And you can use a shopping trolley, which I do frequently. OK you have to get it on and off the bus, but unless it's extremely heavy that isn't too difficult. Not ideal on a crowded bus, but better than struggling with bags.
  25. Maybe, but this happened immediately.
