  1. That's awful. Have you spoken to the people concerned about the burning plastic in particular? If the council did nothing, you could try asking your councillor to chase it up if it happens again on a regular basis?
  2. This puts our problems in perspective! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/feb/16/letter-lost-in-1916-delivered-in-london-more-than-100-years-later
  3. Please tell me when this very warm water is, so that I can time my visits accordingly!
  4. What a bizarre thing to do. They've got a car. Why couldn't they have taken the chairs to a charity shop selling furniture, or to the council recycling place?
  5. Souvlaki Street moving into the old Blue Mountain premises in North Cross Road.
  6. I think that StChristophers which is a local charity may appreciate it more. They have less admin costs than a huge concern like Oxfam and also make much less money from donations. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that somebody is going to be in the St Christopher's shop and is looking for a wedding dress and just happens to spot this one. Which happens both to be in their size and a style that they like. Whereas Oxfam online has a much larger number of potential buyers. I bought my partner a linen jacket from there after we had been looking in charity shops for one for ages.
  7. ...about what? "The market" produces a lot of toss. It will produce whatever is good for capitalism. It won't necessarily produce what's good for people. Eh?
  8. Oh, either I didn't know or more likely had forgotten about HSBC in Peckham closing. Good idea re local shopkeepers, thanks!
  9. Sorry, duplicate post and I can't see how to delete it
  10. Is there anywhere locally I can change notes for £2 or £1 coins? I need them for a float I'm with First Direct. The Post Office won't do it because I don't have a business account there. Barclays used to, after HSBC closed, but they have gone. I would rather not have to lug a load of £1 coins back from the HSBC in Peckham!
  11. Many Victorian houses in East Dulwich (including mine) have had subsidence to the front bay, for various reasons. Houses all over London also suffer from subsidence because London is built on clay. You would be getting a house surveyed before you bought it? The surveyor should be able to advise you.
  12. Oxfam sell donated clothes online as well as in their shops. You could try phoning the Oxfam shop at Herne Hill ? They might be able to get more money for it online, as it will have many more potential buyers than in just one local shop?
  13. Surely you are more likely to trace these people by contacting Amazon than by posting on here? I presume Amazon will have email addresses for them?
  14. Roadworks between the Horniman and Forest Hill station were causing huge traffic jams last week. Does anyone know if they are still there? ETA: In case anyone else wants to know - they aren't!
  15. Argos in the big Sainsbury's will take them even if you didn't buy them there. At least, they were doing that last year (took mine), maybe check first?
  16. I hope I am not speaking too soon, but my post seems to have returned to virtually normal 😮 Tracked items are arriving on time, and I seem to be receiving up to date copies of magazines etc. I'm not aware of anything I'm missing which I should have had (though obviously I only know about things I'm expecting). Anyone else? Have they finally cleared the backlog?
  17. Yes. I'm one of the elderly people 😭
  18. How do you all recognise these people? I don't even recognise people I know 🤣
  19. I did. The one in Clapham Junction sounds like a very small shop for commuters? Could you explain the difference between a Poundland shop and a Poundland local? As far as I can see, the East Dulwich one is being described as a local? But isn't a local essentially a corner shop? That space on Lordship Lane seems quite large. Is the Poundland in Peckham a local? Do you have a link to a relevant article? I can't find anything giving useful information. I quite like Poundland. I have a lovely wren ornament which I bought there several Christmases back. It has a crown - king of birds ❤️ It never got put back into my Christmas box I would rather have had a Lidl, though .....
  20. Does anyone know if the swimming pool water is now heated again? There was a fault, and last week it was cold (and the week before the pool was closed due to the fault). I tried phoning but nobody answered. ETA: Got through. The water is still cold. They are waiting for a part from abroad so goodness knows when it will be warm again 😭
  21. You could try posting in the 'Wanted' section on here? Somebody might be glad to have an old metal container taken off their hands?
  22. Try metal containers? They will chew through anything else. Metal dustbins or incinerators (block up the hole with wire or something?) Or else somehow ratproof the whole shed, but that might prove rather more difficult. Or put something strong smelling near the birdfood so the rats and the fluffy tailed ones can't smell the birdfood?
  23. Christian at Netquest in Pellatt Road could do that for you.
  24. The shoe repairer near the station is called Merrifields - connected?
  25. This has been going on round here every so often for years. Decades, in fact. Usually it's stuff like really poor quality tea towels. Thirty (😮😮😮) years ago there were also people knocking on doors hawking truly terrible paintings. I don't think they were the same lot as the "ex offenders".
