How to securely store a bike outdoors?
Sally Eva replied to nmh's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
London Cycling Campaign on how to lock up your bike: basically "two good locks including both wheels" https://www.lcc.org.uk/advice/bike-security/ Make sure the D-locks can't be got to the ground, where it is easier to jemmy them off. Two sorts of locks. Somewhere where people are around and there isn't lots of debris from past thefts, indicating that theft is easy. -
How to securely store a bike outdoors?
Sally Eva replied to nmh's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have locked my folding bike up (I agree such a thing is not seen often). When I locked it up folded, I found sosmeone had locked their bike on top of it and it was very difficult to disentangle them and take mine away. Locking them up unfolded would seem to work though. Our Asgard has not been touch in 15 yrs except for children jumping on the roof. The bikes in there are not worth a lot of effort though. A friend of mine spray-painted her bike, loudly and unprettily, to discourage thieves and that seemed to work nmh Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I?ve currently got the bike on a vertical hanging > thing in the front room - I?ve actually got a > nicer (non commuting)bike on the bottom part of > this. what did the tracking sticker look like? Would be worth keeping an eye out for them and taking them off if you find them on your bike. -
Blackbird (near East Dulwich Station and Queens Road station) have been refilling keep cups throughout. Cafe G on Peckham Rye West refill them now. Others (like Goodcup in Nunhead) are using compostable cups ie no inner plastic lining.

Most importantly we will be maintaining routinely a 2m social distance, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Just in case we need them, good idea to bring a face mask. Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19. This ride is organised by Southwark Cyclists, and is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. Southwark Cyclists are part of the London Cycling Campaign. If you have any feedback, good or bad, please get in touch with info@lcc.org.uk. Where are you trying to get from/to? Sometimes the best idea is to re-cast your whole route. Cycle.travel is a good route finder.

Legally a cyclist pushing a bike is a pedestrian. So if you need to use a pedestrian crossing, this is the legal way to do it.

Development of strip of woodland close to ED station
Sally Eva replied to Reg Smeeton's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
See below. Go and take a look probably the answer. I'd be interested to know. There were suggestions to re-open it to give pedestrian access to the new school. What was said at the time was that the school didn't want it in use for security reasons. The council closed lots of rights of way at the time the housing estate was developed. Much regretted now but too late. EAST DULWICH,SE22 - THE "SECRET" HOSPITAL TUNNEL Disused tunnel under railway line connecting Dulwich Hospital (originally St Saviour?s Union Infirmary) with St Francis Hospital (originally the Constance Road Workhouse of the Camberwell Union) The Dulwich Hospital Tunnel 2019 This disused tunnel under the railway line once connected Dulwich Hospital with St Francis Hospital. This saved time going by road, the stretchers on wheels had large pneumatic tyres to cushion to ride on the uneven pathway. Dulwich Hospital (originally St Saviour?s Union Infirmary) still exists (and in use as a hospital) but St Francis Hospital (originally the Constance Road Workhouse of the Camberwell Union) was demolished in 1993 and a housing estate now exists on the site -this is the estate that you see next to Dulwich Hamlet FC. You can still find the entance of the tunnel from the back of Dulwich Hospital & even walk through the tunnel and up the slope the other end but then you reach a garden fence. -
About the refugee hostel I do not know but the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers probably does. Try info@sdcas.org.uk

When WILL Dulwich library reopen?
Sally Eva replied to apbremer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Marmora Road book box is delightful, like a fairy Christmas house. It's at the Forest Hill Road end on the uphill side. There's also a box on Etherow Road near the top of Friern Road. Mostly for children's books I think but lots of others. It's got a good turnover so always worth looking inside -

I don't see why zip vans wouldn't work for the tip. The last time we took anything there, there were so many zip vans that they were being asked for ID etc

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/ulez-where-and-when Even if you make a short trip in the zone using a vehicle that doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards, you need to pay the daily change. However. if you are parked within the zone but don't drive, you don't need to pay the ULEZ charge.

We did this and subscribed to Zip Car for a year. That made it clear that we didn't need a car at all but it was a good transitional stage. I think their rules may have changed and this https://www.zipcar.com/en-gb/car-hire-london/southwark may well be out of date

I ran along the Harris Boys bit of the park perimeter this morning. The only bench I saw was a fallen tree trunk carved into a very nice seat for two. Very isolated from the road and also (by water) from the rest of the park. Everyone who experienced this has my sympathy. I experienced something similar in Nunhead Cemetery (many years ago and completely different person). The police were very concerned by the danger this person posed to women and girls. Stay close to others would probably be best advice. And report everything to the police.

It's not a no through route sign. It's a timed restriction.

Insurance - East Dulwich updated as flood risk area
Sally Eva replied to jenniferd's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Also look at their exclusions. If this is marked as a flood risk area you may be offered a high excess. Dulwich had flood prevention measures on the park about 10 years ago and these plans for PR have been coming for about 5 years. Climate change is affecting flooding frequency. Many of the watercourses around here are just under the surface. -
Homophobic verbal attack by Veolia Bin Man
Sally Eva replied to noahsdw's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You should report it to Veolia and, if they don't respond, to your councillor Give Veolia the date, time and street. They should be able to identify the guy. -
If you can find the frame no I think you can find the registration (if it's registered) from that. https://www.bikeregister.com/bike-checker

The Peck flows through the grounds of what was Waverley School, under Homestall Road road and into the park. I believe the council has lost its path through the park. Clearing the brambles off the banks near the pond allows it to flow and has revealed the wild iris on the banks. The patch of wild flowers near the junction of Strakers Road and Peckham Rye East is on the site of the old paddling pool. This was contaminated by a spring underneath it which couldn't be stopped from entering the paddling pool water and led to the pool being closed. The land below this patch of wild flowers (between the dirt path and the road), is very marshy and I guess the underground spring continues to flow.

Where is the unsubscribe option for outdoor advertising in ED?
Sally Eva replied to 1983groke's topic in The Lounge
I find adverts "tailored to my needs" far more annoying than the common or garden "buy this" sort Spartacus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I can't wait for holographic outdoor adverts as > shown in films like back to the future 2 > or minority report > where the adverts are tailored to each pedestrian > > > Now that would be annoying -
Where is the unsubscribe option for outdoor advertising in ED?
Sally Eva replied to 1983groke's topic in The Lounge
Or use Opera or firefox browsers which have ad-blockers built in as default. You can't expect Chrome to block ads since it is Google's whole business. Other search engines: duckduckgo etc EDguy89 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 1983groke Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Even with online advertising, if you don't want > to > > see the adverts, you can switch off your phone > or > > close the laptop. > > You should get a nice adblocker. If as you say you own a share of the freehold, are you talking about shared ownership through a housing association? Otherwise, as a part owner of the freehold, you are a shareholder in the company which owns the freehold and can express your views as such. The management company works for the company which owns the freehold. That means that as a shareholder (with others) in the company which owns the freehold you can decide to improve the the poor insulation. You are part owner of the company which is these people's ultimate landlord. The other owners of the freehold may be the direct landlord ie agreed the tenancy
