  1. OTOH the bus pass for teenagers means they can always get home, no matter where or what they have got themselves into
  2. Re de-funding the freedom passes. I don't entirely understand what's being suggested here. These are funded by local councils. There is a TfL pass for over 60s which runs to pension age. Maybe that's what's being threatened?
  3. Yes, you are supposed to stop.
  4. Those areas were excluded by Boris Johnson when he was mayor (it was one of his campaign promises) They would be included in the government-proposed extension to the north and south circulars. Boris Johnson is PM. My guess would be that some wise guy sees it as a way to a) raise lots of money and come closer to pollution targets b) blame their political opponents
  5. This is the schedule for November. Everyone who tries it says good things about it. East Dulwich Road by the hospital is on here, also Lordship Lane by Court Lane. My guide is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] To join in, email PCSO Kevin Phillips on [email protected]. He's a really amiable guy, kind to his fellow human beings, children and small fluffy animals. Just about everyone in fact except speeding drivers. He'll alter the roads, dates or times to suit his volunteers. 6. The paddling pool was closed and filled in about 20 years ago. It was contaminated and the contamination was found to be coming from an underground spring. It's the patch of wild flowers near where the road for the car park comes in, just north of the pedestrian only path.
  7. I've been told various possibly contradictory things about the lost River Peck. One: that its course is actually lost -- and this seems quite likely since the common is very low-lying and (as everyone knows) very boggy in the winter despite new land drains a few years ago ie the Peck just seeps through the whole area Two: that it runs under the manhole at the junction of Scylla Road and the east side of Peckham Rye. Certainly there is a lot of subsidence on the east side of the road going south on the east side of the Rye. Every time I cycle up there I wonder what is causing the non-park side of the road to subside. What I would really like to see is the Peck restored and made a natural feature of the Common. That may not be possible and lots of boggy bits may be the nearest we can get. Flooding is only going to increase and solutions to slow down the water and persuade it into underground aquifers will be better for all of us (and the wildlife whom we share the planet with)

That's going to work really well, given > Colyton is a major A road with hardly any kids > cycling to school, dog walkers, and school > coaches. Why wouldn't they just go north via Linden Grove, Consort Road etc?
  9. They are obstructing the highway. They need a licence. Try your councillor. Phone the environmental call centre 0207 525 2000 from memory.
  10. southwark has a special complaint form for abandoned vehicles https://www.southwark.gov.uk/parking/abandoned-vehicles yours doesn't seem abandoned though if someone keeps moving it. Make sure you report it to Apcoa: 0207 708 8587
  11. I should contact Kevin and discuss it with him. He's an over-weight friendly Welshman and very chatty. Most things on the suggested calendar can be changed. At the moment there are morning and afternoon suggested sessions.
  12. I think at least sometimes Kevin does it with one volunteer. Maybe while training volunteers he needs two.
  13. Many thanks to those resurrecting this thread and I'm very cheered that so many have had a go at Speedwatch. There's a new proposed timetable for October out now and I've just posted it on the What's On forum. For more info contact PCSO Kevin Phillips on [email protected]. Kevin's timetables are very flexible and he will alter times and places on request. The speed guns work in the dark (and the rain) but the team also have to note the registration number, vehicle make and colour and (obvs) that is much harder in the dark.
  14. Yes, to this -- stuff said and done on the internet is as criminal as stuff written down or shouted. Complain to the police. This is hate crime.
  15. https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/london-uk-most-congested-cities-traffic-hours-driving-roads-busy-birmingham-glasgow-manchester-a8775056.html London drivers spend 227 hrs a year stuck in traffic with an average speed of 7mph. As you say it's the 100 yards at 50 which is the problem.
  16. I've got a dim memory that the police told the lady with the hair dryer not to do it -- she might cause an accident I understand what you say about the dangers of vigilantism, which seems particularly out of hand at the moment. Speedwatch is run by the Met, always has at least one and often two trained PCSOs, and is funded by TfL. That seems enough supervision to be going on with.

  18. 44 is the international code for the UK. You take off the 0 and add 44 to the beginning of your number. Have you got a parking permit yourself?
  19. The bike buddies organiser is Bruce Lynn, reachable on [email protected] or 07729 279 945. He will know how BB handle under 18s (probably with the parent close at hand, I would guess). Cycle confident are advertising family cycling courses again here: https://www.cycleconfident.com/sponsors/southwark/#events. You can book a family session (need to register first). Cycle confident are also giving the impression that they are doing basic cycle maintenance courses though there aren't any listed. A few weeks ago they said they didn't have money for them, now maybe they do. I've replied to jimmah and lordshipmonkey privately, hoping to get a suitable response to their goodwill
  20. Any fans of the Robert Elms Show on BBC Radio London out there? If so (or even if not so) tune in for 12.15 tomorrow when Bruce Lynn is being interviewed about the new Cycle Buddies (previously Bike Buddies) programme. Should be excellent publicity for this scheme that matches up inexperienced cyclists with experienced ones. Help is given on route planning and on riding in traffic. Flyer here, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kTmumXIqhnTJiGt2uE7AaIMrBGRRhNq_/view?usp=sharing Link to LCC page for all the other boroughs now involved, https://www.lcc.org.uk/cyclebuddies
  21. OK, Southwark is not funding cycle maintenance courses through Cycle Confident (or anyone else as far as I know) Some Lewisham Cyclists courses are running and their calendar (see previous post) is said to be accurate. The weekly bike maintenance course is not running but the second Sunday in the month one is. That will be September now but August is always like that. That's the best I can do at the moment. The combination of August and Covid is not helpful.
  22. :) I think the phraseology leaves something to be desired. It gives an impression that everything they do is in Enfield. Southwark won't be funding stuff in Enfield. I'll ask Cycle Confident if they do a Southwark bike maintenance course. We used to do one in Canberwell but it was knocked on the head by Covid. I'll ask if it's restarted. Lewisham Cyclists have restarted their bike workshops (I think and will check) The link is here: https://lewishamcyclists.co.uk/helping-you-ride/maintenance-classes/ These people are in the East End and start at ?40 https://www.bikeworks.org.uk/Pages/Category/book-a-maintance-course This one might be the one in Enfield. https://www.lcc.org.uk/events/fix-your-ride-2?esid=17495. It does seem a long way away. This is Burgess Park though: Community Cycleworks looks still open https://www.communitycycleworks.co.uk/bike-fix/
  23. Full FREE Cycle Skills Training is back. You can get tailored training at a level suited to your needs, or book a lesson for the family (with up to three participants)! Choose from Basic (off-road environment), Urban (quiet local roads) or Advanced (complex junctions and busy roads). Provider in Southwark is Cycle Confident. Book at https://www.cycleconfident.com/sponsors/southwark/ If you think some advanced training would help, book up. If you know someone just starting cycling, suggest they do the basic training. If they need a bike, consider the ?20/month loan scheme provided for Southwark by Peddle My Wheels
  24. Sounds like this doesn't it https://www.idtheftcenter.org/brushing-scam-can-it-really-hurt-you/ The site includes advice on what can go wrong and how to protect yourself
