In NI the rioters didn't set fire to their local shops and loot everywhere did they? (Or did they?) I'm guessing that riots are easier to predict there. Just felt awful to see London burning and the police seemingly equipped with nothing more than riot shields. I understand the bit about water cannons not being able to be deployed in this situation but genuinely wondered about the effectiveness of rubber bullets if it had been deployed in this instance at least.

Or does the difference not matter? Are we talking deterrent to it happening in first place or 'solution' once its kicked off?
  4. Yep I agree with that elizabethg, its been reassuring to read of people carrying on as usual. I think the police and emergency services have been fantastic. Have also talked to so many people at bus stops, shops and on the street (more than ever). Everyone trying to support each other where they can. The forum has been supremely helpful, really appreciate the resource.
  5. I have been on Rye Lane today and the only shop that was open was the big Lidl store. Personally felt that the atmosphere was okay at first with shopkeepers and members of the public pulling together.
  6. If you want to stage a legitimate protest against something, or have a political point to make, by all means take to the streets to make yourselves heard. People have fought and died for your right to do that. If you just want a new pair of trainers or TV then just fuck off.
  7. Oh for god's sake UDT, please, please, don't try to condone the mindless rioting and looting on that basis. There is no excuse for that kind of violence and wrecking of people's livelhoods. I agree with you that there are complex reasons for why we are where we are but this behaviour is deplorable. Ask anyone who has been at rock bottom in their lives. Did you steal, loot and set places on fire? How did that help? I have lived in countries where people REALLY have nothing. Not much to eat let alone cr@ppy MacDonalds, KFC etc and wowee, HD TVs to watch. They are bloody grateful to have a half-used pencil to write with and value any form of education, the fact that someone will teach them how to read and write. I have far more respect - and more importantly, hope, for them. We have plenty of opportunity for education here, do we not? But how complacent we have become for those things we take for granted - democracy, clean drinking water, access to books. Yep, its cr@p having a lot less prospects but violence, rioting and looting are never the answer.
  8. Cas59 - see above. Message from the Administrator about limited access to some areas of the forum due to the high levels of traffic on the site this eve. (Thanks to the Admin team - was very helpful to be able to read the local info on way back home this eve).

    Ask Admin

'Recommending' themselves differs from 'advertising' themselves: So let's say local business person starts a thread and posts... "Hi, I am Alan and would like to offer my services as a local plumber/cat sitter/cup cake baker." That's advertising what he can do for you. Then Alan either posts on the same thread or starts a new one (likely using - shock horror - a different name such as Mrs Trellis) "I have been thoroughly impressed with Alan's ability to sort out leaking taps/feed little Thomas Honey Fluffykins/bake lilac frosted vanilla sponges for Aphrodite's 4th birthday party. I will be using Alan's services again and I recommend that you use him too." Signed Mrs Trellis (really, Alan). That's recommending yourself, naughty naughty. [Disclaimer: all names have been changed for reasons only known to me.]
  15. No, I have managed six shirts and three tops this evening already. (tu)
  16. I now know that there's no such thing as Triassic boulder clay and I should never have chosen a predominantly sedimentary area for my geological map. That and the fact that relationship angst can easily wait until after third year assignments are completed.
  17. Please, please, please could someone check the display on the top left hand side window at Chener Books and tell me its not a coincidence? Ta.

  20. Yeah right woody, you didn't know where the gowlett was a moment ago! How can you compare pizzas? :))
  21. Woody - the Gowlett is actually in Peckham (I believe) but really its a short walk to there. If you're at the Actress, just walk to the end of where Crystal Palace Road meets ED Road, cross over. Walk past the playpark at top of Goose Green, past the little group of shops, BC Bikes is on the left, turn left down next street and at the end is where the Gowlett is. Dee - I cannot add a link but there's a separate thread about the drinks too.
  22. Nette - I knew I could rely on you! Just spent the best part of an hour on phone to IT support and whilst waiting, I managed to read almost halfway through tthat wiki entry on my phone. Its SO SO funny, I was guffawing and chortling at absolutely everything in the end. Thankfully I'm at home and not out in public. I agree, funniest thing I have read in a while :)) (tu)
  23. Dee - some of us are meeting up beforehand if you don't want to go along on your own let me know! I hate walking into places on my own but I know it doesn't bother some people. This is for the drinks at the Gowlett that jaws posted about, not speed dating or the dogstar :))
  24. As are the speed daters ... I reckon.
  25. Did a fellow forumite tell you to write that or was that (gasp) ... original thought? (Rhetorical question btw)
