It also highlights how a system based purely on delivering shareholder profits screws us all in the end.

I'm not neccesarily condoning the practice, just being honest about what I do. Regardless, aggressive and dangerous behaviour doesn't make a car driver any better than a cyclist. Many more car drivers drive recklessly, break the law by speeding, jumping lights, undertaking, slipping into bus lanes and stopping in the green box etc. Doesn't give me the right to knock off their wing mirrors. I wouldn't consider myself as experienced as some cyclists on here, but I have found in my experience that if you cycle more assertively it's far safer. I was hit recently on Gallery Road by a car that tried to overtake and then realised there wasn't enough space. Had I been further out they wouldn't have attempted the manoeuvre. Needless to say they didn't stop.

Not all cyclists jump lights blindly. Most of the time jumping lights actually makes cyclists more visible to other vehicles rather than being hidden behind a truck or bus. I jump pedestrian crossing lights if there are no pedestrians crossing and it's not at a junction. I jump junction red lights to get a head start on traffic going in my direction and to be visible, but only if I can see the opposing lights going red and no traffic crossing. On bigger junctions eg Camberwell Green I might cross half way when one side is red for traffic turning right. I've never been close to being run over except when going through a green light legally and some tw@t decides to turn right across me and miss by inches.

It's not all doom and gloom. A lot of people made their fortunes during the 30's depression. Moonshine anyone?

Good review for Jaflong here. Must get myself down there. Tried the Indian Dining Club on Gipsy Road the other day which I was also quite impressed with. -
Not sure it'll ever replace books but sounds like a neat idea in this ever shrinking world, especially if you're travelling and you can't pack enough books. Not sure how compatible it will be with sand and sea though. I prefer to handle a book, but then I said that about my vinyl when CD's were introduced.

You can buy two brand new aircraft carriers and still have enough change out of ?10bn to wage war on a small sovereign state.

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University .. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephant's foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day. Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly. Probably wasn't the same elephant...

Strange man near the Peckham Rye Cafe / One o'clock club

The other day I cycled up and down Adys Road trying to remember someone's front door whose number I'd forgotten. I only cycled up and down 3 or 4 times with a puzzled look on my face, when suddenly an old lady started screaming at me (from behind her privet) that she was going to call the police, etc. I instantly understood her fears and had police stopped me I'd have happily reassured them of my innocence. But I couldn't help feeling that her reaction was a good one erring on the side of caution. She's a frail old lady. How was she to know I wasn't casing her or her neighbours house? Similarly if I was shooting in public and someone asked what I was up to (as has happened many times) I'd rather that person was reassured than feeling uncomfortable. And no, I don't look like Gary Glitter. -

Not sure that was a judgement, merely a question. I agree with what you're saying though and I'm certainly not an advocate of wrapping kids in cotton wool. Going back to the OP, I would be curious to know the intentions of the person filming and how that footage was being used. It may be harmless, but equally if it is going to become fodder for somebody that will go on to prey on children then I'm not going to make it easy for them. I'd much rather err on the side of caution than just assume they're innocent. -

Can you define the risk you think it's OK to expose children to? -

Like jimbo1964 I'm also a parent and a photographer (CRB checked) and can sometimes be seen taking photographs in local parks of my own children and that of friends. I'm always aware of other parents fears (well founded in my opinion) and try to ensure that strangers children are not in frame. I don't think it's paranoia to be protective about your children and to question the motives of a stranger filming your children. At the very least, assuming it is harmless, the documenter should ask for your permission out of respect. You have a right to know where and how images of your children are going to be used especially if they can be clearly identified. jimbo1964 did the right thing to alert the Wardens although personally I would have simply asked him what he was doing and based on the response / attitude perhaps even some official ID decided how to take it further if necessary. One can never be too careful when children are involved, better safe than sorry even if it's not your own kids. To call it paranoia is an ill informed statement. I think Georgia was originally a Brazilian colony founded by C?ndido Mariano da Silva Rondon around the end of the 16th Century. So basically Georgian/Brazilian, same difference, although the Brazilian girls are slightly more attractive. Ever had a 'Georgian'?

The Pianist is a great film. Just reminded me of The Piano Teacher which would get my vote too, although it didn't get a mention in TTT French Films.
