Was the traffic normal this morning to Elephant?
kford replied to damzel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Traffic backed up from Oval to Peckham Road, last night because of Kennington chaos. And back to Victoria the other side of VH bridge. And everyone sitting with their engines running, in this heat. -
Agree. It's a bit dingy over by the windows now.

two arrested trying to steal a motorbike in Upland Road
kford replied to lilolil's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Watch bike thefts slow down now. This was probably a one-team crimewave. -
It might be a mansard-style extension, which wouldn't affect the front profile of this already imposing building. We'll see. http://www.traditionalproductreports.com/images/roofing-april2014/7.jpg

Lordship out. A little reminder of life under old Labour in the '70s.

Spider: "How long? Both for TFL and Southwark roads. If you took the accidents on Townley road it would prove nothing. Do not think a short period of time will prove anything. You have to take things over a much longer period. Still Southwark will jump on a figure and convert it into positive spin for a flawed policy." Exactly. They'll say it's not being adhered to, and roll out cameras etc. And still the accidents will happen, as most are not statistically caused by speed.

They really are used mainly for parking, in bus lanes, on double-yellows, outside schools, in restricted bays. They'll be looking for vans loading on LL in the bus lane, of which there are many on a weekday. They can film people driving in bus lanes, but it's harder to convict as the perpetrator has to be filmed driving past the sign at the start of the bus lane and has to be seen driving for more than 10m inside the white lines of the lane. Otherwise it's not a sound conviction.

Spy cars aren't emergency vehicles so they have no reason to leave their engines running.

They have cameras on poles all over London monitoring bus lanes. It's the usual way of issuing fines. There's one by Denmark Hill station, and one at the end of the bus lane by King's. They used to have them built into the front of buses, in the early 2000s, but they were too hard to maintain. The camera cars are there mainly for parking fines, as they're operated by APCOA (Airport Parking Company Of America); they'll also issue fines for bus lanes and box junction violations. rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > stevie23b Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > why not just have a camera stuck on a lamp post > to > > cover bus lanes? > > Or on the front of buses?

From Southwark's Draft Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan: Measure 4: Southwark will, undertake enforcement on idling engines at hotspots within the borough. "Vehicle engines left idling when parked contributes to pollution, there is law that makes this an offence but has rarely been enforced. We will start enforcing this law to tackle this unnecessary form of pollution." I know where to start.
-
What annoys me is that they sit there parked with their engines running, for up to two hours.

Probably because it's a low-budget short, not an ad or feature where the rates are ?1000-2.5k.

The citymapper app has lots of options. And takes into consideration delays.

Loz's route by TfL is best. 50mins. Or cycle, 35 mins. Or motorcycle, 27 mins.

Drive to suit the conditions. Eyes on the road, not on your dials. And not on your phone please, like the Zip-car driver I encountered today tootling along at the state-approved 20mph, on the blower, who drove straight across the zebra crossing on ED Grove while I was on it.

See dulwichfox's post on the other 20mph thread

If they didn't flash, you're fine. I suspect they're still set for 34-36mph.

And still people will use their phones, pull out without looking, drink and drive, drive tired - the real causes of collisions - but because they're doing 20mph, they'll consider themselves officially 'safe'.

Lorries have been speed restricted for years, yet the seem to be crashing more: http://www.bettertransport.org.uk/media/21-10-2013-lorry-fatalities-research

Fair point

But they won't happen at all if the primary causes are addressed.
-
I'll repeat my fear that this looks like nothing more than a hey-we're-doing-something distraction from the real causes of fatalities and injuries in the borough. I'd be interested to see the statistics for causes of collisions in Southwark. I'll wager they reflect the national average: Failed to look properly 35% Failed to judge other person's path or speed 18.9% Careless, reckless or in a hurry 16.2% Loss of control 14.7% Poor turn or manoeuvre 14.1% Travelling too fast for the conditions 10.2% Slippery road due to weather 10.1% Pedestrian failed to look properly 7.2% Sudden braking 7.2% Following too close 6.7% Which would suggest that a campaign to get people to pay attention - to think - would have more effect. I'd much rather those posters say 'PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN', especially as I was nearly knocked off yesterday by a girl in Ford Ka who was texting (she was driving under 20mph, so she probably thought she was 'safe') And most London fatalities are caused by (usually female) cyclist + tipper truck + roundabout/junction - a sub-20mph collision. Address this first.
