  1. Derwent Grove was built around 1875.
  2. They should be handing out Samurai swords, apparently: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7207005/Father-cleared-after-chopping-off-intruders-ear-with-Samurai-sword.html
  3. Dunno. Would be even more alarming if they weren't known to the intruders though. By the lack of chit-chat on here about it, I suspect some of the earlier posters might be nearer the mark.
  4. Poor Leno - Royksopp

  6. The police put a note through the door last night telling us that a group of young people had entered a house on Hansler Road and attacked the occupants. They told us not be alarmed, as these types of crime are very rare and that we should contact them if we saw anything. Alarming.
  7. Would that include the double yellow lines at the corner of junctions? If so that would be classed as 'Leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position' with a police offence code of MS10 and three penalty points + fine. Cf the Southwark Parking camera car parked on the corner of Lordship and Hansler Road, blocking the left hand sightline for over an hour and with its engine running: http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/5001/carkz.jpg (Rehashed from 'inconsiderate council drivers' thread, so apologies if you've read this)
  8. And the abuse of position goes on. Right on the junction of Lordship Lane and Hansler Road, one of Southwark Parking's Orwellian camera cars, parked on double-yellows, engine running, in a position blocking motorists' views left. This is a tricky sightline even when cars are parked legally and I suspect that if the police, or a civil (as opposed to council) traffic warden saw this you'd end up with endorsements. Outrageous. http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/5001/carkz.th.jpg BTW, after over 30 mins, the car is still there, engine running. I think that's an offence too.

  10. Spend the money on installing a large one of these: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8461652.stm They're only made down the road too.
  11. Loads of cops pouring out of four vans on the Camberwell New Road this morning, helmeted up and with battering rams. Some Southwark-wide operation? Or just south London in January?
  12. Nice idea in principle. Set a live brief to Camberwell Art School. Winning design is used. Get Foxtons to sponsor it so we don't have to pay.
  13. DD is right to suggest a connection - two of the fire happened on building sites owned by Greenacre Homes: http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/tn/news.cfm?id=1091&headline=Watchdog%20to%20probe%20Camberwell%20fire

  15. It's my least favourite building in the area, along with the Haart/Co-op Chemist/old Woolwich block on LL. It looks like that apartment building near Amsterdam's Schiphol airport after that 747 hit it.
  16. Parking restrictions around junctions is the best solution. Traffic lights just make people impatient, especially at night when there's no-one around. Speed cameras, as i've said before, just make people look at their speedos and not at the road. See:
  17. Two or three bulbs out in Hansler; clocks need resetting; timers out.

You're lucky they didn't pursue the fine - they have a ?17m bad-Icelandic-investment-sized hole in their finances to fill, don't they?

Best not to reply - they'll only put you on the 'live one' pile ;-)

  21. JTT is right. Appeal every ticket - there are loads of loopholes too: yellow lines should be unbroken; double-yellows should be have a 't-bar' end; signs should be clear and posted a set distance apart and make sure the offence, date and all vehicle and location details are correct, to the letter. BTW, if you get a ticket from a private car park, such as a supermarket or private land, ignore it - it's completely unenforceable.

It's not hard. It is if you come across these signs, of which there are many in central London: http://www.barnetresidentsassociation.org.uk/bra/files/parking-sign.png
  23. Burn it in the back garden. What?
  24. We bought green canvas covers, with brass eyelets around the edges. Just big enough to slip a small padlock through. Reg and postcode marker penned on the side is a good idea too.
  25. Never had real problems with parking, and I live just off LL. Even on Saturdays when everyone's buying their meat, fish and silly trinkets. I've had to park around the corner a couple of times and that's it.
