  1. OMG woof....you just put me right off my dinner..... Why ever did I start this thread? lol
  2. Yeah especially after I pee'd all over mine >:D
  3. The only flaw with your route Karter is that cars park on some of those streets so where would the blue lane go exactly?
  4. I doubt if the idiot cyclists who jump red lights, ignore people on pedestrian crossings and cycle without lights at night are going to go out of their way voluntarily to do a cycling proficiency course, free or not. And nor are they going to buy licenses either..... Most schools still do cycling proficiency schemes and many of the cyclists that break the rules have done them. It's not rocket science that a red light means stop...yet some cyclists, along with some drivers ignore them in spite of driving tests etc. I get as mad as anyone at cyclists at night without lights on the road but if a driver does hit one the driver would never be held to blame because of that rule break.
  5. yw frump.....get a copy of that HR policy tm and come back to us if you need to.
  6. Usually what happens when you write in your resignation is that the employer will work out how much annual leave you have left and work that into your finish date. It sounds as though they, your employer, didn't do this at the time and have left it till the last minute, so for me they are to blame for the mess. They are quite right though in their HR policy and that is standard practise of paying outstanding leave when notice is served. But I say again that is a discussion they should have had with you when your resignation was tendered. Have a look at your companies HR policy. many companies write in a time limit, of for example, within three days of receipt of resignation to have that conversation and agree the end date in writing.
  7. Yes I'd be more inclined to use Crystal Palace Road depending on where I was coming from and going to. It does seem given how many side streets with traffic calming cut throughs there are in the area, that no sane cyclist would be seen on LL.
  8. And how would such a licence work for the under 18's. It's a totally idiotic and unworkable idea and last time I checked a cyclist usually comes off worst in a collision with a vehicle. I did a cycling proficiency at school and it was FREE. There are also similar schemes today for anyone to do that are FREE.
  9. Apple Pie which is Deep Fried in Hydrogenated Fat Oooh gross........
  10. How does a 50cm wide lane at the side of the road cause congestion? Most vehicles drive that far from the kerb anyway? Agree about the existing route you use though.
  11. On the propsed route the blue lane would be in the bus lane anyway so I really don't see the point. Also vehicles often stray into cycle lanes and boxes, and they are not fined for it. PR cycle lanes make very good sense where there are no bus lanes and where the road is wide enough to accomodate the width of a large vehicle and a cycle lane. A road doesn't need anymore width than that. And where I agree that it's up to road users to be considerate and drive/ ride safely (and inded for pedestrians to cross safely) we both know that will never happen. Interestingly though, most urban cycle accidents don't happen when a cycle is riding along the side of the road....they happen at junctions and when changing lane, which is why putting boxes at the head of lights with feeder lanes was a very good idea.
  12. Yeah I know what you mean about writing, I'm getting a fair bit done meself, on here lol. In fact I think I can safely say that it is the forum that has kept me in bed today.....where I have now been joined by a glass of Perri and a bag of peanuts >:D< Didn't see GMTV tho.....were they good? Mr Childs and Ms Bleakley?
  13. Good point Ratty.
  14. See I knew I wasn't alone. I did get up for 40 mins, even got dressed, but am back lying on my bed lol Today is cancelled!
  15. Most of that route already has bus lanes or designated cycle lanes so a complete waste of money imo that will add nothing to cycling safety. The money would perhaps be better spent filling up the countless potholes I have to cycle over....which reminds me.....when on earth is something going to be done about the appalling state of Rye Lane?
  16. The problem is that too many councils are scared to spend a few quid to save a load more, but they will have to start. That's the key isn't it. But often they don't have the few quid in the first place to spend. Here's an example....when replacing boilers....ideally you go for a more expensive one that will need less maintenance than the cheaper option that will cost double in the long run. But if you don't have the money for the expensive option in the first place then what do you do? This has been the major problem for local authorities. I totally agree that running costs are more expensive than they need to be but councils are trapped by the inadequacy of their budgets. My personal area of interest is decent homes and housing. You had a government that imposed legislation and deadlines on local authorities but gave them no way of finding the money to do it. But then you have an authority like Southwark that thinks it's ok to spend 100 million on a call centre. So in the end it becomes a bit of both...impossible demands on resources and poor prioritising of what funds do exist.
  17. Ladymuck Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Get a bed pan... Ewwwwwww....... Now I have a perfect low cost alternative to the slanket option.....get a sleeping bag and sew in some sleeves!
  18. LOL....nah I need the ladies room.....
  19. But BBC news 24 is different to the daily news programmes. I particularly like 'Hard Talk' for example. And the BBC reported the tube strike ;-)
  20. It's full of chilli's....about 30 on there at the moment...:) Oh and I'm finally getting out of bed.......
  21. I totally agree with you on the overcharging by private companies of the public sector (especially in care services).... There are other areas though where (for example in maintenance contracts) where the service provided is substandard because the price paid, is too low. Many things in the private sector are more expensive then in the public sector so I can't personally see how that much can be outsourced to achieve these cuts.
  22. What that mafia led oligarchy country next to China?
  23. Oooh is that the one with Dick Van Dyke playing a doctor and his son playing a cop?..........
  24. LOL Rosie....that's why I added 'apparently' to the title..... Personally I love doughnuts...make my own, never coat them in sugar and consider them to be quite healthy.
  25. Yeah but the tone of his post suggests that it's his kids at school that will be affected by cuts (which they probably won't) and in the grand scheme of things that will make him one of the least affected. Local authorities are going to be expected to make massive cuts in a system that has little that can be cut. Job losses will mean less staff (and that includes in care services) leaving those behind with bigger demands (as people switch from private sector services they can no longer afford to public sector ones) and less resources to deal with them. At the last Kings Partnership Board meeting for example there was a question raised after some free transport provision for the disabled to take them to the hospital for appointments was cut. I'd say that's a pretty essential service that has already been cut back. Already the Peckham Rye and Nunead SNT's are going to be merged with less officers.....at a time when crime is likely to increase (as it always does in down turns) We have to wait for the spending review in October to see just how bad the cuts will be, but make no mistake, those most affected are going to be those that can least afford to lose those services. On the other hand, the thing most likely to affect the middle-classes will be any changes to the child tax credit and child benefit system. It is expected that the threshold will be lowered on tax credits (rightly so) and that child benefit may be means tested. Along with expected rises in interest rates - it's homeowner's with mortgages that will feel the impact there....THAT's where Quids is likely to be hit......on those things.
