    Ask Admin

Hi Rosie, I ask this meaning no malice as you know...we've met and you know I'm not insane. Why would you or anyone find a comment about barbers and crew cuts (which we probably both agree was a reference to a lesbian stereotype) offensive? I don't know if you recall my reply to that...but I referenced a well known lesbian drama series to make the ironic point that incorrect stereotyping isn't just the premise of the public (it's a reference that would not have been lost on other lesbians). I personally think that it's far better to challenge stereotypes than to bury them through censorship. As for the other threads, I was responsible for just one, but no-one knew who the complainent was so any reaction can not have been personal. And I did discuss it with Sean beforehand....because I don't feel offended by what I see as tongue in cheek banter about my sexuality...I'd rather have the chance to deal with it than pretend it doesn't exist. So no I really can not see why a post about crew cuts would cause such outrageous offence to warrant deletion of so many posts (and I reject the off topic excuse as the title was non-specific and in the Lounge) and the repercussions of that. The other two threads, I again personally didn't see as anything more than a dig at Admin tbh (which is probably something you would agree on) so I am abivalent on that. I think had the deletions from the original 'Lesbians in East Dulwich' thread been handled better, the following onslaught wouldn't have happened (although I can't speak for the OP's of those threads obviously). As for my thread, I do reserve the right to be light hearted about my sexuality. I know what homophobia is...and it's not someone making a tongue in cheek comment in the spirit of light hearted banter. It's far more sinister and dangerous than that and I would be the first to say something if I saw evidence of it. I know nothing of cliques....I've made friends through this forum, both gay and straight and I think that most people that meet me like me and I am happy for anyone to post on any thread I start. But you have a right to have your view too and I appreciate that you are prepared to discuss that view.
  7. Ermmm is this the 'after dark' experience I am looking for? I can do full stops! .

    Ask Admin

Most of us (and I'm including you in this Jah) are wont to be puerile from time to time as well, so even tho' I know what you are talking about and share your basic opinion, there isn't a lot you can do about it. DJKQ isn't being offensive in starting another thread - she just runs the risk of attracting wrong 'uns I absolutely agree with that and I'm not an idiot...I know that's the risk. I'm big enough and ugly enough to handle it. What I did object to was the content of the Admin post that suddenly appeared on that thread this morning. There is nothing in that thread that can be reprimanded for the three reasons that Admin list (one of which forced me to defend a myself from bring accused of homophobic). Just because someone thinks it's a 'gay slating' thread (a complaint apparently) doesn't mean it is and I think Admin have not handled it very well (which takes nothing away from the great job they do in giving us a forum in the first place). Anyone can see from my subsequent posts I'm upset about it. I've seen far worse in the Lounge never get reprimanded. I've always been polite and reasonable when speaking with Sean about deleted posts, I've always tried to appreciate the view of Admin but on this occasion I think Admin jumped in and got things wrong. In the end it boils down to some lesbians saying "the existence of this thread is offensive" and other lesbians saying "censoring my posts is offensive", at which point you start losing the will to live That is the same with anything though. There are always two sides. Men take the mick out of women and vice versa - we take that as a given, the good ole battle of the sexes, no-one complains about that. The views and sensibilities within gay culture are no different. But lesbianism is not an off topic subject for heterosexuals - that's my point. Some lesbians obviously think it is. The law however would agree with me because it is not homophobic to be toungue in cheek. I happen to think my attitude is the more sensible one to have (it is far more constructive to have an open debate about stereotyping than to pretend it doesn't exist)....but I don't expect to find a date in ED any time soon lol.....and I'm definitely blaming Admin for that, of course ;-).
  10. No Admin....you could have pm'd me......you didn't (there's no excuse for your first post re 'gay slating' on this thread)....you are human like the rest of us but an apology to me would be appreciated.
  11. Nothing wrong with a good debate here though, especially in the lounge. I've engaged in them in the past but you can't forget that a stream of jokes at the expense of one group of people may for some be a joke amongst friends and for others be a bit unpleasant. Similar references around race wouldn't be tolerated would they? Anyway - bought any nice dungarees lately? Dang - so much for my self enforced ban....has lasted all of five minutes (so weak!)...... I would rather deal with a comment about crew cuts and barbers head on in a witty or clever way than censor and pilory the comment (esp when it's obvious there is no malice intended). That's what discussion is and when it comes to serious issues, that clearly are racist or homophobic then the ONLY way to deal with them IS head on and in a public domain. I have to be honest and say that if all it takes is a comment about barbers to uspest someone then they might need to ask themselves whether a forum is for them. I would hope that most people are capable of telling a comment that is laced with malice form a comment that is tongue in cheek whether they know the person writing it or not. As for dungarees...I have a couple of pairs lol.....;-)
  12. But Ed it has to be taken into account that there are groups of people that ARE friends. And if we worried about everything we ever write or say because someone somewhere might be offended we'd never speak..... You've said it.....there was nothing overtly offensive and the over reaction is I'm afraid to say is something I really am not going to bother with anymore....so to quote the dragon's Den...'I'm out' (that's not a pun either but it will be my last word in the lounge or anywhere bar my football group).
  13. You know what, I give up - no-ones entitled to have a view on anything anymore (just really can't be arsed and have far more enjoyable things to do) .....well done.....another poster get's driven off the forum. Just for the record...it's Funny how someone accuses me of homophobia privately (because 'gay-slating' is an accusation of just that) but doesn't have the balls to do it publically.....Worse still, Admin then go and publish that in a effort to reprimand the thread and I am forced to publically firmly out myself to defend myself from that. I'm not particularly happy about that. Admin could have pm'd me and had a discussion privately (as is usually the case) but on this occasion chose to do things this way. So whoever made that comment/ complaint - I hope you are pleased with yourself. (And I'm sorry Sean the people who sometimes complain don't post on the threads they complain about). I'll just stick to my foootball thread in future.....where I don't have to deal with such bs.
  14. But you miss the point bob....I started the thread after a discussion with someone (who helps out with the forum) yesterday...because of the anger from those who'd had posts deleted (from another thread) and I was trying to be helpful. The idea was that it would take the heat and focus of the other thread, and as long as it was clear that the thread was intended to be light hearted....which I think the OP does, then no problem. The only people making an issue out of this are people who haven't posted and are complaining. To descibe the thread as a gay slating thread is the over reaction imo (and accuses me of something I and yourself and those others that have posted would never do) - I would be the first to ask it be shut down if it was.....and I think it's right to respond to that. I do think there has been an over reaction to the other threads (now deleted)......and I do think had they been a wink at any other issue other than pink ones we wouldn't be having this discussion. I may wrong on that but it's what I think. I can think of many threads that parody other threads that have never been deleted or censored for example. Obviously there's a difficult balance to be struck in a forum where you have a lot of people that know each other and have met, and new posters who don't always get the humour or tone of some posts. But the forum is a real 'community', not a cyber one so yes, sometimes conversation will resemble pub conversation more than anonymous cyber stuff. Mountains out of molehills comes to mind and I do think everyone just needs to lighten up a little and calm down. Again that's just my opinion.
  15. I see also two other threads have been removed. Is any kind of light hearted discussion that refers to anything gay really the last taboo now? I really thought, having grown up through a time of great prejudice and having myself campaigned for some of the many rights that I and other gay people now have, that we'd got past that. Forgive me for not realising that I am not allowed have a light hearted attitude to my own sexuality. And to those that complained why don't you have a discussion with me about it. You can pm me if you like because I'd be really interested to know.
  16. Ok I started the thread and I AM gay......and find nothing offensive in anything posted (and trust me I'd be the first to complain if I did). The thread is not a gay slating thread. I know many of the people posting and can tell you they would never dream of offending anyone. I do hope you'll consider my gay opinion as valid as anyone that has complained.
  17. So where do cyclists go to see the proposed route and give our feedback on it I was wondering the same because I think it could benefit from our intput. I agree that when I cycle I am cycling from point A-B and rarely stop to shop. Sometimes I am cycling to the shops but I don't ever find myself stopping en route. I think that is true of many cyclists so similarly think the notion that a cycle lane will add to local takings a bit of a red herring. And the shopping areas and streets that do best from cyclists are those with docking stations to lock to. Rye Lane has lots. LL does have some too.
  18. Admin...no-one is being offensive...sigh...can you give an example of knowingly rude (I am assuming it is this thread as you have targetted it specifically)....people have posts deleted...given reasons they don't agree with and then have no right to reply to the complainent. I personally think some poeple need to lighten up and stop making mountains out of molehills. (Disclamier added to say this is just my view and intends no offence to anyone) *waits for post to be deleted*
  19. Just how would a cycle lane solve any collision problems? (can we have some stats on that) And LL being a destination in it's own right....for local peole yes but not for those passing through....you are overestimating I think any benefit in that respect. The reason for a blue lane going anywhere is for cyclists, and cycle safety (not for passing trade or any other reason)....and that has to be the primary consideration, not any thing else. Yes Barry Raod is uphill but is is a gentler incline than Lordship Lane. I doubt any cyclist would ever take on the incline of LL uphill when they can (and currently do) circumvent it anyway......so no benefit there to anyone. I would say the same of Dog Kennel Hill. The most sensible route seems to be that used by existing cyclists, Crystal Palace Road, Bellenden, onto Peckham High Street and to Camberwell. An alternate would be Barry Road, Peckham Rye, Rye Lane, and then either along to Camberwell, or taking the old canal route to Burgess Park and through to Elephant that way. Both are far safer routes (because they have less traffic) and easier to cycle along than LL and DGH (because they are flatter). Those two things are what cyclists care about.....not whether a few cyclists might stop off on route to buy something.
  20. lol...so what do you think of a pink highway as opposed to a blue one?
  21. But Artful really is a dog...a very clever one admittedly because he can read and write......
  22. Running rings around a load of sheep....always lol.
  23. and the dogs Artful...don't forget the dogs...flirting with the Queen...remember? The Queen always seems to go with dogs... Well I had wanted to post bitches (that would have been a clever play on words and relevant) but felt almost certain that would be deleted...so stayed with the dogs..... I didn't see what came after the dogs and I'm guessing that was the custard pie moment followed by the great disappearing act! Did I go to the circus last night by chance? Artful is claiming responsibility but secretly I blame you LM lol........
  24. What was the topic again? *Why the painkillers Katie?*
  25. A dog in a thong....now that's something you don't see everyday!
