  1. But it is fristrating when a local community knows who is responsible for a crime/ crimes and the Police can do nothing for lack of hard evidence. Even more frustrating if the victim knows the cuprit and sees nothing can be done. Whilst I agree absolutely agree on your points about proven beyond reasonable doubt penguin, I do also think the tide is defintely in the favour of the criminal. We need more Police surveillance, at a time when funding of the Police is being cut. There's no easy or effective answer apart from residents and homeowners ramping up their own security, but then again how far do they need to go? Recent posts on here report burglars breaking windows (which is a pretty bold and noisy method of entry). Do people really have to put bars on their windows?
  2. If you ever heard a woman shout 'the referee is shite' then you definitely were in proximity to me AM ;)
  3. There have always been 'feminist' comics. There has been an independent comic sector outside of the superhero big boys for decades. I was one of a whole bunch of female comic artists in the early 90's. Look up artists like Kate Charlesworth for example and even stuff published by the guys like 'Love and Rockets' by the Hernandez Brothers. The only thing new is that one of the big boys has finally realised there's a market outside of the nerdy geek male niche....something that the big French comic publishers have known all along for example.
  4. I normally stand to the right of the goal at the Cold Blow Lane end :) MIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL....................
  5. No one likes us...we don't care!!!
  6. I agree that H has the made the most interesting points on this thread. Unemployed aside, there are almost a million people in full time work that can't pay all of their rents and yesterday a news report claimed that most of those working and renting in London were spending at least half of their income on rent. Yes the market is reflecting a supply and demand but moving the poorest out isn't going to change anything for the better.
  7. I agree LM but part of the problem that many with mental health problems have is in finding employment in the first place. Employers just don't want people who nmay be ill more often than others. Whereas those who are already employed at the time of the onset of illness tend to find more sympathy in their place of work and theredfore often cope better. A lot of work needs to be done to combat the ignorance of and stigma around mental health issues before forcing thousands of people (who may not be ready) into the labour market. We all know that welfare reform is driven by money only. There has been little consideration of the deatil of the impact on some individuals. And let's not forget that tax credits anbd help for those in work is also keeping people in homes they could not afford without it. Housing is too expensive accross the board (proportionate to income) and until someone in power has the balls to do something about that then people are going to continue to be screwed.
  8. Hi Lindylou. You are not alone. ATOS fail everyone but the most obviously disabled. They can fail you because the assessment they give, and the scoring they use for answers to the questions they ask are designed to fail all but the most obviously disabled. ATOS are paid ?500 for every person they fail. If you appeal and win, they do not have to pay that ?500 back and worse still have called people back in for a new assessment within weeks of success at appeal, only to put them through the whole disgraceful process again. You must put in an appeal right away, in order to continue your incapacity status benefits. You will though only be paid the base rate of ESA of ?71 (I think it's that amount) per week while your case awaits tribunal. If you win your appeal you will be paid all the benefit owed, backdated, but that of course doesn't help you to live on the reduced benefit whilst you wait for that process to go through (and it can take months). The CAB are a good port of call for advice first. You could also ask your GP to refer you to one of the local community mental health teams (there's one based in Lordship Lane) and they will help you get this sorted out. As Astrid says above, this is happening to lots of people. Do not panic. The governement have been told by many far better qualifed people than they, just how wrong this is and the impact it is having on people affected. The just don't care, and why should they? They want for nothing, and owe everything to the privileged upbringings they enjoyed.
  9. And there's no need to assume it was that guy either. Thieves targetting bags are often more subtle. I've recalled before on here the time I followed a guy (he was on a bicycle) from ED station who was clearly (to me) scoping distracted women, to steal a bag and how when I got to Sainsburrys there happened to be two police officers in there anyway (and I reported him). The point being that the area is known for thieves that target women. Like all good advice.....keep your money and cards in a pocket that can't be picked. I really don't understand why women still use purses/wallets tucked in bags. That has been an easy spot for theives as long as I have walked on this planet. But that is not to say either that the victim of theft is somehow culpable. In an ideal world theives wouldn't exist, but they do, so anything a person can do to stop themselves being targetted is good advice.

  11. How on earth can you define 'unwilling to work' when a requirement for receipt of JSA is proof that you are looking for work???? You really do not know anything about the benefits system do you? And edited to add that you don't know anything about the rest of the country if you think the pressures in London on housing are replicated in every big city in the country. And here's another one for you.... What should be done with those who can't work? Because that one day might well be you!
  12. I think he just feels that some aspects of the story don't make sense. Personally I just think it's impossible to know, even if it was a fox, which fox did it. To then cull on mass is a disproportionate reaction.
  13. I was just talking about this with my brother and he made the same points. He thinks it more likely that the pet of a friend or family member attacked the child than a fox.
  14. Uncleglen you are talking nonsense. I live on an estate and some are on benefits and many work, some in low paid jobs, others earning average salaries. Some people own their homes, others don't. People on benefits are as different amongst themselves as those who work. Some are lazy, and not interested in work while others try as hard as they can to find work. JSA affords no luxury to anyone claiming it. Some people become ill trying to live on ?71 a week. Others will find ways to make additional income, with severe penalities if caught (and many do get caught). And some people on the ?71 a week do voluntary work, in some cases working the equivalent of a full time job (although the system doesn't allow them to exceed 16 hours per week I think) for no additional income. And many of the unemployed at any one time have previously been in work, and will be in work at some point in the future. The long term unemployed are such a small percentage of benefit recipients that it's hardly worth worrying about. The biggest recipients of benefits (some 80% plus of the entire welfare bill) are those over 65 and those in full time work. Go and have a look at what state pensions, child tax credits for working families and housing benefit for those in work costs the nation uncleglen. It might open your eyes a bit. To generalise about the unemployed is dangerous. Personally, if the unemployed kid is happy to wash a car for a tenner pocket money...then let him do it. I for one won't be fretting over the cost of that to the economy....black or otherwise.
  15. Won't be signing it because dogs carry out more attacks on humans than foxes and humans carry out more attacks on humans than dogs. I might sign a petition to cull humans though.
  16. If the OP stops even one person from being taken in by this con (and let's face it, the scammers wouldn't keep doing it if it didn't work sometimes) then it's a worthwhile post. It's easy to ridicule anyone being taken in by this but how many of us have been taken in by beggars, giving some untrue story about needing bus fare etc? I think many of us have all fallen victim to that one. Asking for money from strangers in the street (whatever the story or rouse) most of the time is just a scam.
  17. I've lived there for more than 20 years and never known it to be rough. I wouldn't still be living there if it was. And it's not only leaseholders that take pride in where they live either. The majority of people are still council tenants.
  18. gutshell is talking nonsense. Assuming that because a dog is off the lead and having fun in the park, it's owner is therefore bad is ridiculous. Most dogs will come to when called. They are walked to the parks specifically so that they can have a bit of a run (exercise is as important for the health of a dog as it is a human). I'm old enough to remember when licensing was in place before. It made no difference to the bad owner. We already have laws that give police the power to seize aggresive dogs. We already have laws that allow the RSPCA to seize poorly treated animals. I can't say I've seen many truly dangerous dogs in my life (if any at all). But I can say that I've seen many people unecessarily scared of dogs. But just because some people have a disproportionate fear is no reason to bring in unecessary and draconian laws that treat the majority of good owners like idiots.
  19. I live there and help manage the TRA and it's hall. It is indeed very quiet there. Crime is extremely low too. The TRA is very active and works with the SNT and Housing Officer to make sure any problems if they arise are dealt with quickly etc. It is nothing like the usual stereotypes applied to estates. And of course you have the beautiful park across the road too. I'd say go for it.
  20. Lol....cheers H :)
  21. Damn and there was I thinking that humans were the most destructive and pollutant of all species..... Never seen a fox destroy the rain forests, or mull over which toothpaste to buy from the hundreds of brands on offer. Hmm never saw a fox buy a happy meal for it's cub with the useless plastic crap that keeps it's offspring devoid from parental input for the time it plays with it...... In fact silkematt...look around your home and ask yourself...just how much crap do foxes really do to the environment? Your house like mine and everyone else is full of crap no doubt........ Just because you dump in a toilet directly into a sewer doesn't give you more rights than a fox. Your affluent still ends up somewhere...ask the dolphins that swim through it daily.
  22. Fabulous photo but don't show it to James Barber. He'll be horrified to see that ED is not an Island ;)
  23. You may be describing a scenario like this Huggers? I just sat at these lights for 20 minutes (hence the plentiful time I had to take photos) with no cars able to turn left because the lights phased as such that the road only clears to do so when the lights I'm sat at are on red. The result of course was numerous drivers driving down the wrong side of the road to get through the lights......and then I saw this...... A police car doing the same, upon which a whole bunch of more drivers thought it was ok for them to do so too (and I lost the will to live). I gave up trying to turn left and went ahead instead. It's quite clear that idiots are running this show and I cant remember the last time I actually saw anyone working on the other junction.
