  1. Well the road was in poor repair before the work....so there was little point in ongoing maintenance esp. as planning for the major works began more than two years ago. The works have pretty much gone according to schedule. The only delaying factor has been Thames Water who are outside of the council's control. This was always going to be major works with major disruption.....everyone was moaning for it to happen beforehand and now you all moan because it's getting done. The world has not stopped turning and it'll soon all be finished.
  2. But you are at best guessing Dave. I can do the same everytime I'm going slow and get overtaken. It's no proof of anything beyond a guess (I've cycled in London for around 25 years). But in the days when I did regularly cycle at 20mpr hour very few cyclists ever overtook me....so I too can refer to observed experience. It may be that cyclists are going at 15 mpr but that is hardly a break neck speed. As with everything, you drive/ ride according the the conditions. Most people do, some people don't.
  3. Again presumption without fact. The roadworks on Rye Lane are not finished yet. Ramps and the reappearance of them ARE on the councils's radar. I'm sure they'll be removed soon enough.
  4. So you are going at 12mpr and assume that every cycle that overtakes must be doing 20mpr? What a stupid conclusion based on no evidence whatsoever. I too used a speedo for years when I was younger and doing a lot of training (being a competitive sportsperson). My average speed was 25mpr (on a flat) and I was super fit on a very lightweight racer. Most cylists are nowhere near that level of fitness or speed.
  5. That is a good point Ms B. A lot of pedestrians just freeze when they hear a bell.
  6. It seems you have a problem with politeness and consideration? I guess that is why you're getting a little angry. Now that is overreacting. What on earth are you talking about? LOL....I really couldn't care less either way. That's my point. See Dave...most cyclists never get up to speeds of 20mpr......that's a complete myth. There was a discussion in another thread about this where I and Binary drew some stats and comparative speeds to that of professional cyclists. Pedestrians are notoriously bad at 'guessing' speed.
  7. It is a PARK...and therefore a SHARED space. No-one one person, cycle or animal has right of way over anyone else. I think you are completely over reacting to something that wasn't even a near miss! You've gone from complaining about being startled to 'what if' scenarios in one leap.
  8. I agree Pearson. Uisng a bell on a shared right of way is rude. But the OP was clearly not in the way of the cyclist, just startled as he/she rode by! So in other words, cyclists should ring a bell everytime they pass someone....just in case the pedestrain is startled????? Makes no sense.
  9. Like I said....local people lol.... Aintree First Day Fashion
  10. I'm with Pearson. The vitriol aimed at cyclists on this forum has been shocking at times.
  11. For example...I've lost count the number of times dogs have chased one of my footballs or worse still almost pee'd on the footy equipment we use on Sundays. I just accept that it's part of park life.
  12. Peckham Rye Park is Cycle friendly too. The point is that the cyclist didn't almost mow you down, just startled you. That's not a crime. Many things can startle...a dog running at speed out of the woodland for example. It's park life.
  13. So a cyclist passed you when you didn't expect it. Do you think dogs that run past you when you don't expect should wear bells?
  14. I think objective justification is the key isn't it. A spa can oprate men or women only spaces/ membership whereas a golf club can't.
  15. Anyway back to parking spaces. I usually borrow a neighbours kid when I want to take advatage of doorstep parking. Only costs me a comic and a small bag of sweets :D
  16. Unfortunately Pearson if white people (men mostly if we are honest) hadn't conquered, subjegated and enslaved half the globe, not to mention a whole gender (and that still goes on in some parts) historically then you might have a point.
  17. Yes that article sheds a different light on things. Although the council funds many things that raise revenue on the basis that the revenue is then in turn used to fund other community things. Many TRA's operate in that way for example. I think it's the amount of money that's probably the issue here though. The Community Council Fund for example will give grants of up tp ?1000 to fund events. The Tenants Fund that TRA's can apply to also tends to see grants of only ?1-2k on average awarded. Those I think are reasonable amounts of funding. ?28k on the other hand for one event seems a bit disproportionate (and it comes under a seperate channel of funding).
  18. Festival Cuts It does seem like a huge amount of money. I'd be interested to know how it's spent. Wonder how much headlining acts cost for example. If the event attracts, as the article claims, 16,000 people, then that's just ?1.50 per head to replace the council part of the funding.
  19. I grew up about two miles away from Aintree race course and have been loads of times. It's right in the heart of an ordinary working class area and lot's of local people go. There's no real dress code. Some dress up, others don't...you'll be fine whatever you wear.

I'm still trying to figure out what a Gay Worzel Gummage looks like myself (and why that would be a bad thing of course :S )
  21. But be careful, you may be accused of posting right wing reactionary propaganda by those of a more left wing persuasion. I think even a lot of left wing people think prison is too easy.
  22. 'Embellishments' are a regular part of contributions to licensing opposition. That's why the licensing department are precise in regards to under what terms an objection can be made. The licensing authority will then sort genuine complaint from irrelevant comment. Whilst being precipitated by events on that one night, what we have to remember is that other complaints and previous beaches of license were also taken into account. The resulting review is a reflection on a longer history of poor management and licensing breach, not just one night. Had DH's reputation been impeccable beforehand, then the events of one night could genuinely have been seen as a one off. The licensing body felt there was a culture of poor management overall and made it's decisions based on that.
  23. Hunting was never about fox control - let's get that nonsense out of the way. Farmers do still shoot foxes just as they've always done. The point about hedges and changing use of the countryside is a valid one but urban foxes are in towns for one reason only....because there is an easy and plentiful supply of food. No cull would more effective than getting businesses and residents to dump and bin their food porperly. The ever growing rat population is also benefitting from the poor refuse situation.
  24. I've never really noticed it either and until they changed the flight paths a couple of years ago I was right under one with planes travelling from 4am! But when my mother came to stay she noticed it right away. I guess some people are more sensitive to noise than others and I have always been able to sleep through anything anyway.
  25. Like I said they can shield light pollution easily. It's up to them to find a proposal that does that.
