Dangerous cycling charge to punish 'Lycra louts'
DJKillaQueen replied to John247's topic in The Lounge
Well also the highway code says that a driver should give a whole cars width when overtaking a cyclist...how often do you see that then? -
parent and child spaces in sainsbury's car park

Oh do grow up pk...point scoring on sarcasm will get you nowhere with me. Gubodge...it's not just proximity...my view is that they are not needed for anyone apart from the very young (ie. babies and toddlers) and people who genuinely need more space to get out of the car like someone who is pregnant for example. I think it's ridulous to think that children of a certain age (five as suggested by someone else above for example) and above can't get out in and out of a car as easily as most adults, and then walk across a car park. Having said that...for some people it is also possible to have a second adult with them that can drop them off at the entrance and then go and park the car. Even single parents have friends that can help in that way. And before we had parent and toddler parking were hoards of children killed or injured by reversing cars in car parks? No...because part of driving is being absolutely aware of what's around you....hence the low speed limit in car parks and never reversing at a speed out of first gear. If as a driver you can't do that...then you shouldn't be driving. Similarly parents have a responsibility for the safety of their children. Any argument that it somehow has solved a safety issue is not born out by any fact whasoever. -
It really riles me Murphy when people put words in my mouth like 'seemingly in favour of Metropolitan Open Land being built over and havig floodlights'. For the record the kind of floodlights needed to light a small astro turf are not the same as those needed to light a full sized football pitch for league matches like those at DH. And no I wouldn;t be bothered by floodlights shining down onto a pitch until 6.30pm. 10pm yes, but 6.30 no. 6.30 is not an unreasonable time. At worst it means the lights being used for 90 minutes for a couple of months during midwinter. It's a school. And btw, Harris Boys School don't have room for exterior sporting facilites so bit of a null point don't you think? Alleyns originally applied for something more and were rejected (for good reason). They have modified to make a new application. It's my view that the new application is not unreasonable. You disagree which is your right but you are never going to convince me otherwise and as many people would agree with my view as they do yours. Embellishing your argument with irrelevant examples such as comparison with th elighting at DH's league stadium and belittling H for even posting is not going to help your argument with the planning committee I'm afraid. They will decide what's reasonable...not you or I.

That's hilarious Binary....I can think of many places I could use that little trick to get through the crowds.

Hang on....I wasn't rude to anyone before they lowered their tone at me. I have no issue with other views but have a look at the thread and see who gets indignant first. It's not me. Have a look at who is pouring personal ctiricism on others that don't agree with them...again not me. However I have been told I can't possibly know what I'm talking about, that I should stick to football (like my life has no other aspect to it) and how dare I even suggest that children are capable of walking form car to shop? Why do some people even bother posting on forums if they can't live with other points of view? -
Exactly H. If you live next to a school there will be school noise. Sports don't generate that much noise anyway bar the odd cheer or referees whistle. And many parents who work are not home before that time. Obviously after 6.30 and into the evening the situation changes but the application isn't for that.

I don't answer stupid loaded questions pk. My view is that wider spaces for parents with children near to the entrance are not needed. I already posted that. Babies and small toddlers who can't walk properly yes but the rest no (I think someone posted a suggested cut off at 5 years which seems reasonable). Most Kids older than that can walk just as easily as the rest of us I think you'll find, born out by the fact that those without cars manage to walk their children to and from the shops/ bus stop every day. Happening to have a car and kids shouldn't afford you some kind of special privilege imo. I'm not playing devil's advocate...it's my view. -

What ridiculous comments from the last two posters? So I don't have nieces and nephews...do you think I somehow live in a child free world? Best not to make assumptions about people you know nothing about I think - will always get you into trouble and helena I will comment on anything I like because this is a public forum if that alright with you. You don't have get out of a car to undo a childs seat belt...I know this from experience...esp in the spacious 4x4s and people carriers that so many local parents seem to favour. I've got kids in and out of limited space more times than you might think and have never suffered great inconvenience having to do so. -

I do accept that babies and small children in child seats need space to get them in and out but that is the only need for extra space imo. Once they can walk they can get in and out themselves. -

I can think of lots of people that need wider spaces...4x4 drivers for a start. I would agree that spaces are barely wide enough but childern are half the size of an adult so why do they need more room to get in and out of a car? The shopping/ buggy etc goes in the boot doesn't it? The only point that makes sense is regarding babies...but anything that can walk can get in and out just as easily as the rest of us. -

LOL ;) Mind you the swedes seem to like to provide creches everywhere. Not a bad idea for the bigger stores I think. -

Seems reasonable that if you wilfully ride in away that kills someone then you get punished. However the number of pedestrians harmed or killed by cyclists is still extremely low compared to other vehicles. -

I'll take ironic and idiot because it's a forum and I never lose sleep about anything I or anyone else posts. All views are welcome and valid. So my view is that if kids really are such a burden that they require dorostop parking when shopping...then don't take them. Extreme I know but c'mon....does anyone seriously think it is really asking too much for a child to walk across what is a small car park? The car gives you the room to shop in one go, the trolley means you don't have to carry it to the car.....it's pretty easy really. -

Thank god we live in an affluent country where all parents have to worry about is whether sainsburrys has enough parent and toddler parking spaces....give me a break! What do parents without cars do? They walk their kids to the bus stop where they ahem...get a bus...and how many kids died or were injured walking to said bus stop? Exactly none.... Spoilt and pompous tripe. -
It is an extreme race and brutal. It's not a race for novice jockeys or horses. It's awful that two horses have died but I would also say that 38 horses did not die. I'm quite ambivalent about horse racing as a sport but the national is a race that many people bet on out of tradition. The previous poster who said that but for racing these horses wouldn't exist is right. They are highly trained high spirited thorough bred horses......trained for one purpose. The race and it's fences used to be be far harder. A lot has been done to make the course safer whilst not compromising the spectacle and challenge of the course. Part of the problem seems to me to be the congestion of riders over the early fences. Maybe widening the fences might help. Cutting the number of runners might help too. What is the point of running 100-1 outsiders with no chance of placing for example? I don't know what the ideal solutions are, but I was able to pick both the winner and second placed horses for a bet and I know nothing about horse racing. If I can do that, then the organisers can certainly run a field of horses that are both capable of jumping the fences safely and in numbers that maximise the safety of all those taking part.

Do I get double winnings if my horse dies then?

Or it could be the remains of a picnic where the people didn't give a hoot.

I've gone for Bellabrigs, Oscar Time and Character Building (each way).

Thanks for the link. Oh and a French series called 'Spiral' first two episodes on iplayer is worth a look. In the same vein as 'Killing' and will keep me going until series two of 'The Killing' is aired.
