  2. My son is 19 months and we're in exactly the same situation as you. I've done some research and feel confident that it's nothing to worry about. A lot of it, I've heard, is down to the emphasis parents have on boys playing physically whereas parents tend to *talk* more to their daughters (this is A firm belief of one friend of mine who highly recommends a book called 'the gender delusion' ... You can work out the rest) Imo - I just think girls are a zillion times cleverer and I can't believe men rule the world Night. X
  3. he got the timing of a 'collapse' (if you call a small correction relative to a doubling in the value of an index a 'collapse' bang on) - well done him but the reason for the 'collapse' spectacularly wrong - so he's just a random who said the markets will fall in the summer... no sh1t corporate earnings are the only thing positive about what's going on right now (except banks)
  4. camberwell is hell to drive through when there aren't works going on. Peckham back streets is always quicker. With roadworks this would be a complete nightmare - plenty of reasons to avoid camberwell full stop imo, Peckham's much nicer ;)

    cancer

Can you not gently explain the facts? Chemotherapy is definitely a poison, thank god. It kills all dividing cells It's only because 'normal' cells divide and recover more quickly that it is used. That's why it's given in stages, so the person recovers and the healthy cells recover but the cancer cells die. Get evidence based stats?
  6. Our little one is like a robot - if you put him to bed 15 mins early, then he'll just wake up exactly 15 mins earlier the next day! Equally, if he over sleeps at lunchtime by 15mins or whatever, we get whacked by that amount the next morning. So he sleeps 1hr and 15mins at lunchtime and goes to bed at 745pm every night. (we could cut his LT nap back but this way i get to have some QT with him after i get back from work in the evenings (545pm) He wakes at 7am unless we screw up his routine the day before as above.

  8. definitely not those guys - there was no one on our street (visibly) and those charity guys left a while before.
  9. I live just by you, off the top of oglander road. I went to bed early so no tv on and no car outside (left at my mums). Our doorbell went at 8pm. I ran to the door thinking it was a neighbour friend and no one was there but the gate was wide open.. Perhaps they were seeing if we were in too :( Edit to say: really sorry about what happened to you guys.
  10. I will drive past within the next hour. Pm me your name and I'll pop in and ask for you if you want?
  11. Fuschia - I think we have our wires crossed here. The most important thing is that ppl use water that has been boiled. to sterilise the water. The point I don't bother with is adding the powder at 70 degrees (half an hour after it has boiled) to remove the rare bacteria that is found in the powder. I just boil to sterilse the water (only for small babies, not toddlers) and then use cooled boiled water for the feed. That way you don't grow up a load of new bacteria by leaving warm milk around and it doesn't take 40 mins to make a feed. Adding boilding water to milk powder is defo a no no. which is why the advice, instructions on the back of every can, say to wait for th boiing water to cool before adding. Why would they say wait otherwise? Why on earth would I worry about a bacteria that has never caused an infection in this country? so that's less than 1/60million chance... i more likely going to win the lottery 4x over... not just a small risk but a ridiculously small risk Not sure I'm worrying about the wrong thing here...
  12. >The advice is not to use boiling water though ... exactly.... 1) you're meant to boil the water to destroy the many many many bacteria that are in tap water THEN 2) let it stand until it cools to approx 72 degrees (?) cos this is hot enough to kill that one bacteria but cool enough not to destroy the proteins plus loads of mums make up their feeds in a perfect breeding ground for bacteria (i.e. infant formula in warm milk) and then reheat it later in the day!! - makes no sense to me cos any contamination from the bottle or milk powder just grows and grows.... it's a breeding ground right there. taking all the info on board (cos there's no clear answer) i personally boil the water (removing the bacteria from the tap water) after i make up a feed. Then use that water for the next feed. and so on. I've ignored the likelihood of that one bacteria that dies at 72 cos life's too short and it's just too unlikely and too ridiculous to get up an hour before you make a feed to watch water cool to 72 degrees... anyway - i'm going to watch glastonbury now and smile that i'm not there! Fuschia - the advice is not to use boiling hot water BECAUSE it destroys the proteins... blimey.... - have i said that before???! why on earth do they say wait for it to cool. Does that make sense?
  13. Fuschia - it's basic biology that water above a certain temperature denatures proteins. formula powder is very carefully constructed and the levels of the fats and proteins are vital for a growing baby. If you start destroying some of the protein content, the baby is not getting the levels that have been recommended. If it wasn't an issue, the instructions wouldn't specifically say NOT boiling water but 72 degrees (or whatever it is) because at this temperature you just about destroy that one bacteria, that one VERY RARE bacteria, that they have to mention to cover their backs... Instead it would just say "add boiling water" What they dont do is inform you WHY they have this '72 degrees' as an insturction, cos most mums would then understand that the risk of the VERY RARE bacteria probalby doesn't out weigh the fact you're destroying a number of proteins in teh milk if you add boiling water. EDIT to say - the action of boiling is to remove the bacteria from the water - the majority of bacteria during the making process is in teh tap water - not from the factory. there's just this REALLY rare one that they have to talk about so they dont get sued. But with NO incidents in the UK - should we realy be concerned? should we really sacrifice the specific level of proteins for this one very small risk?
  14. if you put boiling water on formula powder you just destroy all the proteins (above 60/70 degrees?) so no real point in drinking it if there's no good stuff in it as for the high profile cases re the nasty bacteria that only dies at 70 degress... they're just not htat high profile. i have never come across any from the UK and considering 97% of babies are fed formula... i just take that risk rather than destroy the proteins in the milk powder but it's everyone's individual decision of course

  16. women need to step back and men need to step up... there's no excuse for men not to pull their weight if everything else is equal (i.e both earning) it's hard work - and involves a lot of nagging - but it is possible just watch out for the usual tricks ... when they do something so badly you have to redo it yourself .... that really annoys me!
  17. shouldnt this thread be in the family discussion room? or is that room strictly for infighting mums only? ;) clearly when men discuss the family - it's a Lounge topic....
  18. here we go - another mum v mum thread :( why aren't we bored of the same old spats time and time again? reducing us to rage on our sofas despite it being none of our business what other mums do? we've all made our individual choices. Would we walk up to people in the street and say these things? please please can you stop passing judgement on other women who are often at a very vulnerable time of their lives Why are there rarely spats about feeding babies fast food, or bullying or inhaling fumes in the street? After all, East Dulwich air is 'a very poor alternative' to fresh countryside air.....
  19. "certainly isn't bothered about inflation and probably prefers quite a high rate to erode Govt debt." not just govt debt but personal debt too. until we see wages inflation im not sure the boe will raise rates?
  20. not hearsay if you look on Southwark planning website you can see they've u-turned (again) so they are now being consistent with other boroughs perhaps arrange a mtg with someone first before putting in an application to verify their latest stance?

That's not fur! - cats are purfect and we love talking about them all the time! yay to cats :) let's have a whole room devoted to cat chats - how about calling it the kitty-chen?
  22. There's a really amazing website which you can go to. You can click on the type of bird you're interested in and it sings you their song. That way you can identify them by sound too. They are quite loud and sing a lovely song. I think it's a bbc website, google will get you there.
  23. From elephant to camberwell and poss further.
