Fire at Elephant and Castle
PeckhamRose replied to ironjawcannon's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was on the 343 and it went down Walworth Road from Elephant but immediately diverted to the little road at the back by Elephant and Castle Station where it had to then go back to Elephant round-about and then went down New Kent Road then hung a right at East Street before joining it's proper route again. And breathe. So I saw the fire close up and it was sad to see. Apparently nobody hurt, but books burning is a sad sad thing. The ceramics in the Cuming Museum should be ok though? -
Travel advice - 2 weeks, ?1000, 3 girls, where to go?
PeckhamRose replied to bloonoo's topic in The Lounge
Indeed FlyDrive California or the East Coast depending on the weather. Friends and rellies in West Coast and Arizona tell me its hotting up nicely.... and you may great a great cheap last minute flight deal if you're willing to be flexible. -
Every day's a bad hair day when you're a motorcyclist. Once had hair cut, new-ish style. Young sweet hairdresser SAW me come in with the helmet. SAW me put it down. But spent too long making sure every hair was in its place. Saw a grown woman cry that day when I left that shop.

I also have tickets to Peter and Alice 8th April, but also to see Nina Conti at Soho. Last time I had tickets to see Dame Judi it was for Madame de Sade. It was pants without her despite Frances Barber, and I suspect her presence would not have made it any less pants!

The Experiment: How friendly are we in East Dulwich??
PeckhamRose replied to mikki100's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Pub last night at Liverpool Street Station. It was absolutely heaving. I was with two male friends. I saw a table with four chairs being used by just two people, and a spare chair nearby. I asked two people if they would mind if we crowded their space and we would try and not be too loud, and they kindly accepted. Their body language implied they were friendly enough (and they were not young people in their 20s who do sometimes appear more difficult to talk to when out). So I introduced myself and my friends to them, and we found out what we had in common and it was a lovely evening for all five ofus. I think you have to be sensitive to who you are saying hello to, but also pick your 'subject',ie person and conversation subject, and you can learn so much and be happy you made the effort. -
Thanks ianr. But I can't work out on the phone how to access the freebies that I have selected and have been told have been activated...

Vodafone can't help either on the phone where you pay 25p for the 191 call, and the vodafone shop in lewisham's staff are completely useless too. I got a Samsung Mini (though I suspect all Samsungs of the range will have a similar system). I am on PAYG and when I top up I get so-called Freebee Reward things. As I am on PAYG (no contract) and Wifi (I use any BT connection or wifi in shops), I opted for my 'rewards' to be free access to the web (which lasts a month). But when I access the web I am being charged the 75p a day to do so, despite being given it free under the rewards. Any ideas anyone? (And no, I can't afford nor need to go on a contract - I only need to access the web when I spent time with elderly parents who have no wifi in their street). Any help gratefully received. And if it works I'll go to vodaphone in lewisham and teach them the answer too!

She was interviewed. Her original idea seemed very imaginative, but as is the case with telly making these days, the ideas are watered down by producers executive producers script editors and so on, till we get the bland pile of doggy poo we saw last night.

Does anyone remember Peckham Manor School?
PeckhamRose replied to atila the gooner's topic in The Lounge
If you join the Peckham Society you may be able to get back issues of the magazine and read letters others have written. Many older folk who are not necessarily into these new fangled computers have met up through the Peckham Society. It will soon be on line, you'll be able to access every article and every letter written and look at all the subjects written about, ie. including Peckham Manor school. -
http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/file.php?20,file=80748 OK then, me juicer. Now, should I add the last of the wine?!

Nope I stand by it. My bike is a tool. It tools along; it's a tool for getting me from A to B.

Parking in front of driveway - no dropped curb
PeckhamRose replied to sfmrs's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As well as the law the fear factor would bother me! Coming back to see my car/bike had been scratched or something, and also never knowing if the car belonged to someone who maybe could not afford to get a dropped kerb and used their car to take her elderly folks to the hospital and you had blocked them in. -
Dulwich IS on the map!

curious - any other BT customers having problems?
PeckhamRose replied to Jem's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Where abouts do you live Jem? We were cut for four days when a local known vandal remains the main suspect when he cut cables on four blocks! -
My mate lives in Upper Norwood. There is a nearby carpet school (Harris) and fabulous architecture. Local bus 410 take you to Crystal Palace so you can get a 63 and visit your East Dulwich mates. She loves it there. Nice park too. South Norwood Lake in one direction and Crystal Palace in the other.

Here's what I have done instead of paying the extra money for Interflora. I can't afford flowers much but on special occasion I thought I would do this. Google to find the nearest flower shop to the person you want to receive them. (Google Earth to see if they look like a nice shop if necessary!) Phone the shop and ask for a delivery and pay them straight into their bank account. It's worked for me!

Bible preaching people coming to your door?
PeckhamRose replied to ukdealguide's topic in The Lounge
I just tell them to go forth and multiply. But in a sweary fashion. I'm like that up until about 10.00am. Self employment is good like that. Right: breakfast... -
A genuine question for the Kiwi's around here...
PeckhamRose replied to Top Banana's topic in The Lounge
My limited experience (2 months motorcycle trip around the whole country) and with NZ family and a glider expert for a husband taught me that in the northlands of the north island the industry is pretty much marijuana these days. And the best gliding site in the whole world is in Omarama in the south island. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
PeckhamRose replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you all go to your local police safer neighbourhood team forum meetings you can say what you think needs to be the top three areas of focus for them. It's pretty much always "burglary" in the Peckham Rye and Nunhead area. Please look up the relevant pages and areas so you can see when they meet. I always used to say in the What's On page when our meetings are; no-one from here came. Can't think why. The councillors can't do much about burglary, can they. -
Possibly because Large parts of Dulwich are not council owned land? Just a guess.

Cheap groceries around Dulwich?
PeckhamRose replied to Jphobia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree about Lewisham as that is where I usually get my veg and fruit but also a heads up to the little greengrocers on Evelina Road just past the Kristals Pharmacy and by the dry cleaners. They are friendly and like greengrocers should be. The fruit is not always plentiful but the veg is, and mostly comes from Kent. And is cheaper than supermarkets. -
I had just left for work and was suddenly nearly blinded by a light. Before I worked out was it was a massive clap of thunder hit. Then it rained. It was a meterological phenomena is what it was.

Lost wedding ring scam surfaces in ED
PeckhamRose replied to Hare's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
But my Mum really HAS lost her wedding ring.... -
I saw the entire Live news broadcast from Leicester University, where about six professors in their field - archeology, forensics, geneology, genes, armoury and others all delivered their own explanation of how they came to the conclusions they did. It was most moving, as they also thanked all those who had contributed their knowledge (and their DNA in the case of the relatives!) Then the head of Leicester University announced with pride that Leicester Uni was the one who had discovered DNA and now this, ie. GIVE US MORE MONEY! It was interrupted by the news of Huhne (who I hope goes to prison), then back to the news conference in Leicester. Back to the news anchors on BBCNews24 and one said, "Well they strung that out, didn't they!"
