At the public meeting to discuss this, I asked if all utilities and building works would take the opportunity of the road being closed, and the answer was yes. So maybe more works have to be done within the 63 week schedule. It would truly annoy everyone if say the P13 used the route for 3 weeks and then was not allowed to do so for another 2 months whilst more planned work went ahead. Imagining the whinging! Anyway, let's hope that all the works are done ahead of schedule. It was the gas company SGS who asked Southwark for a long time to be allowed to do this work. SGS said there had been 81 gas leaks since 2011 if memory serves, and finally Southwark gave in and agreed on the year long closure of Rye lane. It is my opinion (not related to any party in any way) that we need to let things go through their course and hope that all works are indeed completed by all interested parties before the road is allowed to fully open.

Yep Pugwash I mentioned that. It was a darn site cheaper than the one in Nunhead too working out cheaper than buying a new box of bran flakes or whatever. Sadly I can not afford to get my shopping at this shop.

You cite two points in a poorly written text. First, you talk of dissonance with an example of a parent proud of its child's death in a war in which said parent has a belief system, ie. maintaining that belief that it died for a good cause despite other points of view claiming it was a pointless war (in effect). Fine. So what. That is clearly what would happen. What parent of either gender would want to change their belief that their child had died pointlessly in a pointless war? I mean, such cognitive dissonance could kill through grief and shock. You would be devastated that your original belief was wrong or faulty, and that therefore it would have to follow that you would believe that your kid died pointlessly. It would be reasonable to continue with original belief out of ignorance but for the reason of self protection. Secondly, your point about assuming gender. Well so what? Casting directors have done that for years and they are slowly coming round to learning to be gender blind and actually fighting any writer's description of, for example, a doctor as a male doctor when there is no reason in the script that said doctor should be male. What is a blind spot to many casters, is disability casting and race casting. If a writer writes "Doctor" then that doctor could be any human who could believably be a doctor. ie. an adult past the age of 28. The more examples of this we see, the more we see our world having more possibilities. As far as self diagnosis is concerned, well again, so what? My experience is that I don't think I suffer from it, but maybe having worked as a playwright and actor, I am more sensitive to it. The question is: why are you raising it here?

What colour to paint the front of victorian terrace? Help!
PeckhamRose replied to PINKSHARK78's topic in The Lounge
The word "trends" literally makes me shiver even in a hot day. What colour do you like? Can you see it being fabulous on the front of your house? Will it annoy the neighbours? Do you care that it will annoy the neighbours? Go for that, then! -
It is wonderful news. However, this forum is called East Dulwich Forum. This fabulous and important thread is not specific to East Dulwich, therefore is in the lounge. That's the logic that made sense to me. Well done everyone who worked for this. Now let's see the councillors using public transport.

Here's a lovely idea should you be on a budget and also want to stay the night somewhere. National Express Coaches (yes, I know you folks wouldn't DREAM of getting on a cheap coach but plenty of folks do and they have free good wifi and loos and are comfy) do a really good online rate to places. For example a trip I occasionally do when not biking for some reason or other, is as follows. If you book online to start outside of Victoria the price is cheaper. ?6.70 buys a one way trip from New Cross to Thanet. (Ramsgate Margate Broadstairs) Stay in a cheapo hotel. ?6.70 back. The walking around the coast of Thanet is a wonderful thing. My favourite is the longest, which - if you can time it with the tide going out, is magical. From Broadstairs around to Margate is one long walk, but to get there as the sun goes down and the tide is beginning to come back is the best ever. (And great indy bars on the Stone Pier.) The shorter walk from Ramsgate to Broadstairs is fabulous too. But the bits between Margate and Broadstairs have some amazing caves and chalk stacks around Kingsgate / Botany Bay.

Roof Collapse Landells Road
PeckhamRose replied to London&Kent Roofing's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sad occurrence. Neat advert. x -
The same applies to beer and all stuff you can buy in supermarkets. Supermarkets have buying power to demand from producers/providers bulk items at cheaper rates. Small business don't. So of course supermarkets will be cheaper. But you all knew all that. You also have to realise that the councils have had their budgets cut by central government by massive percentages and thus the shops have to put their prices up to us accordingly, because the business rates have gone up. But you all knew that, too.

Advice: 1) If you are with BT Dial 150 and when you can speak say FRAUD and you will be put through more quickly to someone who can advise. 2) Do the 1572 thing and block the last number but they can of course make it look like it is coming from lots of any numbers. 3) For emails, if you are getting a BT bill that looks wrong, forward it to phishing@bt.com The call I got today told me she had my BT account number and my BT phone number and knew my name, when I asked her. She had rung my mobile! So I said what is my name and she came out with a different name. The 8 digit number was wrong (I am a sad so and so I can remember my BT account off by heart), and didn't have the first two letters. The number the phonecall came from was a mobile number 07xxx and she put the phone down on me when I asked too many questions. If you phone 150 and then say FRAUD when finally allowed to speak, you will be more quickly put through to someone. 1572 is useful. But another one sent to emails is interesting, that says your bill is available now. I have a few email addresses and it goes to one NOT my main BT email address. So forward them to phishing@bt.com Hope this helps.

Perfume is a huge issue for those of us with lung problems; I am also allergic to it on my skin. Massive wheals quickly appear. I sometimes have to move away from people on a bus who have been too liberal with it (after shave too!) and only on a few occasions when they've given me a dirty look I have had to say why.

Lordship Lane Independent Traders On TV Tonight @ 6.30pm
PeckhamRose replied to Zak's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
For a modern car to achieve the low emissions that it claims, it has to be at its full operating temperature. Catalytic converters only work once the car has reached a high temperature; in cold weather that can take a long time. Officials statistics say that the average journey time in Britain is about 20 minutes, which will often not be long enough for full working temperature to be achieved. The engine of a modern car stops at traffic lights, or in traffic jams, which is done to reduce emissions. But when it restarts it will produce increased emissions because the engine will have cooled down. Very often, a car in London will spend much of its journey below its optimum operating temperature, reducing pollution is a really complicated job! -
Hi Lavender27. I don't know of anyone on here who has HIV and I am sorry if you do. So I can not speak at all on this. But if you are not getting the (emotional?) help you need I have just done a search and come across this. https://metrocentreonline.org/hiv?field_location_target_id=127&combine=HIV+support I hope you get the support you need. Lynne, this was raised at the aforementioned appallingly attended Police Safer Neighbourhood Meeting this evening and they said it had been dealt with. It was otherwise an interesting meeting, as usual. Such a shame the community do not attend these important local meetings.
-
Well it does not work like that! Remember his face height weight age hair colour, skin colour etc and and try and describe him if you can come to the police safer neighbourhood team tomorrow at Brenchley Gardens Tenants and Residents Association Hall.

Anthenlay Road - dangerous driving and speeding
PeckhamRose replied to lclaase's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Please turn up to the meeting at Brenchley Gardens Tenants Association Hall for the Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting for Nunhead, and tell the police about your concerns. The meeting is from 6.30pm tomorrow Thursday 28th March 2019. P12 bus. -
Went to Canada last year and they did not want to know the International Driving Licence which basically anyone could make (it's low tech, done with a photo stuck on with glue!) and USA too. So if you are going to those places, do not waste your ?5.50.

Damage to Flats At ED Station
PeckhamRose replied to pecksniff's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes, indeed it was quite a shock to see that the brick is not, in fact, brick. Or was I being incredibly naive! -
OK dokey. One can never tell! My husband teaches black and white film developing and processing and printing. People are still very interested in this, just as they are 'coming back' to vinyl!
-
Do you mean cameras with colour or black and white film in, or do you mean movie cameras, when you say film cameras? I have a camera somewhere which uses colour film. Let me know.

phoning Montserrat from BT landline
PeckhamRose replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in The Lounge
I agree with Skype. Not all my rellies are on line and being able to call them very cheaply with a Skype account is great. You have to be online to be able to access the Skype account but the other person you are calling doesn't, as you can call landlines. I only have about ?20 on the account and it barely goes down. Access the skype app on your mobile and make the call. -
Hi all, feeling a bit proud, and am happy to announce the following. On a Saturday I sometimes bike over to Lordship Lane to find the bike park on North Cross Road is blocked off because of the street markets and there is no other one nearby. So I asked James Barber to take this up for me. And wouldn't you know it, it was installed last week on Ashbourne Grove, on the other side of the road from North Cross Road. It has security rails just like the North Cross Road one. Yay! I haven't seen it yet, and can't go tomorrow, but at least you now know it's there. And thank you James Barber.

At the Heber Road end you have Dulwich Chiropractic at 277 CPR. There is an issue which they are collecting signature for, regarding the CPZ. So that could also affect you there.
