Outdated currency - what to do with it.

Ebay. I got rid of some of mine a while ago, the Americans made it a profitable day! -
Contacting Councillors - your preference
PeckhamRose replied to Geoffrey Settle's topic in The Lounge
Once I have met the councillor in person, at a community council meeting for example, I then email them any queries, concerns or information I have, and I also hope to meet them at Police Ward Panels. So email is preferable if I learn from having met them that they are the sort of councillor who does respond to email. In desperation I sometimes write an actual letter on paper and stick it in one of those old fashioned envelope contraptions and drop it in to the Members Room at the council offices. That hasn't happened for a while. Email is preferable. -
Indeed, next to Wendy in the lovely AG Flower shop, Sopers the fish shop, and near Ayres Bakers and Kristals the pharmacy that sells absolutely everything. What I love about Nunhead is it hasn't (yet!) got any little trinkety shops. Fab addition to the neighbourhood!

I was walking along St Thomas Street towards the station the other day - the station area being to my right being just one big red brick wall, just east of Weston Street where it goes through the tunnel - and I came across a slope going up where cars can go, so - thinking I might be using a cut-through or short cut - I walked up it. Security Guard very politely asked if I worked in one of the shops as this slope is for cars and the workers often come out this way for a smoke. I started talking with him and he said that in the not too distant future, whilst the brick wall facade will be kept, that whole area will be knocked through and turned in to shopping and eating area. Didn't get a train home - looking forward to seeing the differences you all describe though!

And the tower block in the series was not Whitcombe Point in Peckham but was a tower block in Shepherds Bush.

best place to buy dollars in central/south London
PeckhamRose replied to niall's topic in The Lounge
Having bought dollars many times, I would recommend not going to the Post office because the rate is much less. In my experience, going to an American Express but not one in the City or West End, offers the best rates. In the City and West End they charge more because of the location. There's one opposite Harrods that I last went to and they offered the best deal. I had the time to do the research then. It may not be the case now. -
Yes. There is a great one I used to visit when I used to go see my Great Aunt in her old folks home. It in a tiny area called Sutton at Hone near Dartford and between M2 and M20 motorways. Hang on and I'll get the streetmap location. OK it's here. Bomb down the A2 and take a right on the A225 Hawley Road, which is the junction before the Darenth Interchange (which connects with the M25). The Hawley Garden Centre is on the right, and is just before the bridge which is - I think - the M25 or M20 motorway. If you can not take a right on to the A225 Hawley Road then carry on to the big roundabout which is the junction of the M25, and go back on yourself so you can then do a left in to the Hawley garden Centre. There's some nice country side around there. If you CAN'T take a turn off the A2 to the A225 use a satnav or look in to the link above and work it out a different way through the very pretty towns of Wilmington, Sutton at Hone, via the A2!

Fair point of course. I only found out that technically I live in Nunhead myself, being the SE15 side of Peckham Rye park. And of course there is a lot of friendly community spirit in ED. Just as there is in Peckham itself and - well everywhere really! But the little bit of ED she lives in, she claims there isn't much but that there is in Nunhead where she works. The point is, whereever one lives we can only try and be as community minded as we can be and others may join in. The community spirit in Choumert Square for example is fabulous, and that is in Peckham!

I asked about getting a new laptop, on this site, several months ago, and had some fabulous advice. I now type to you from my very good new Toshiba Laptop. AND I was recommended a very good on line company to buy it from. I am not being paid nor do I benefit in any way by happily and freely recommending to you that you might consider buying a Toshiba laptop from http://uk.insight.com/en-gb/content/?src=go01&gclid=CO7Pj6HysasCFeUmtAodak3ldQ

A friend of mine is thinking of moving to Nunhead. We went for a walk around today, through the cemetery and then along Evelina Road. Unbelievably - and I did not set it up - complete strangers said hello or 'Afternoon' to us in the cemetery and when walking through the Nunhead Green area people were so friendly. Stopped for a chat with a friend of mine who works in one of the shops along there, and she was able to confirm that people are so helpful and friendly in Nunhead and that where she lives in ED there is not such a feeling of community. Think outside the post(al) box and come to Nunhead!

Cruelty free cosmetics and animal testing - your views
PeckhamRose replied to Thomas Micklewright's topic in The Lounge
I would just like to make it very clear (she said, sounding like a politician), that the British Union of Anti Vivisectionists is not, absolutely not involved with nor does it condone illegal activities or agressive / violent actions. I would not be a member if it were. -
Oh thanks for that! I might go to that. Love the Whitechapel. Saves walking round london actually having to see them all in situ (!)

Cruelty free cosmetics and animal testing - your views
PeckhamRose replied to Thomas Micklewright's topic in The Lounge
It's a nightmare, isn't it. All the drugs I have had for my two life threatening diseases have been tested on animals and they saved my life. I do know that there is a lot of research going on towards a future where testing on animals will be an unnecessary part of research, and that I have put myself forwards for testing drugs on a few occasions, and that when I die my body is to be used for medical research. At least I think about these things. And of course I probably will not let my Asthma UK membership lapse. They do a great deal of good not just involved in unbelievably cruel tests on animals, but education and support for all asthma sufferers and their parents / family / school, etc. -

I know not where it comes from, but a small part of me feels that if we treated animals with more respect we would treat one another with more respect. This includes state/scientific research using animals. For what it is worth I recently emailed Asthma UK about it. Asthma UK replied (and this is part of their reply to me which I have not edited, just not included the beginning and end which was more personally related to me and the work I do): "Regarding your question on animal research, Asthma UK does respect that people have varied opinions on the use of animals in research. Asthma UK is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and we adhere to their guidelines on medical research involving animals. For some aspects of medical research there are no suitable alternatives to using animals. The heart, lungs, blood vessels, nervous system and other part of the body are all interconnected. Scientists cannot yet recreate that artificially and so animals are used to help understand how the ?whole body? reacts. One example is genetic research. People share at least 90% of their genes with every other mammal, and we have the same vital organs, including the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and brain. Research on animals helps scientists understand what these genes do, where they go wrong and develop new treatments that target them. Further information on why animals are used in research can be found on the following website: www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk It is important to note that: ? Animals are only used in research in the UK where it is absolutely necessary and no suitable alternative methods are available. ? As part of the process of developing a new medicine, it is a requirement by law that tests using animals are conducted before patients can test the drug. Asthma UK understands and appreciates that people do have concerns about charities providing funding support for medical research involving animals, and shares people's concerns about the well-being of animals in medical research. We have worked with the NC3Rs (The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research) making a collaborative call on asthma. More details can be found on the following link http://www.nc3rs.org.uk/page.asp?id=1340 Any research project that Asthma UK funds must meet strict criteria, including how it will help us to learn more about asthma. It must also adhere to the Home Office's guidelines for the welfare of the animals. Asthma UK supports the Home Office's commitment to the ?3Rs?, which serves to refine experimental techniques and procedures, reduce the number of animals involved in research and replace animals in research wherever possible. Asthma UK would only consider funding research involving animals if all other possibilities (such as computer modelling, human studies and in vitro work) have been carefully and fully considered, the research is not an unnecessary duplication of previous work and it is likely to lead to essential information that could otherwise not be achieved by alternative methods. All Asthma UK supported researchers whose research projects involve the use of animals require licenses from the Home Office for both themselves and the project itself. There is currently no cure for asthma and around 1,200 people in the UK die every year from asthma. There are around half a million people whose asthma is still difficult to control even with current therapies. Many people would die and others would lead a more debilitating, restricted life if some of the major advances in medical understanding and asthma treatments had not been made through past research, some of which has involved the use of animals. Apologies for the lengthy email but the questions you raise are important to address. I would recommend having a look at the Understanding Animal Research website, not to change your opinion on the use of animals, but because it answers quite a lot of questions on why animal research is undertaken." End. -

Being a typical hypocrite I buy meat and wear leather. But I am a member of the British Union of Anti Vivisectionists. (Some of the photos in the BUAV website are horrific, so be warned) I am considering letting my membership of AsthmaUK lapse because they admit they use animals. Sadly I do not think I can make the meeting, but will attend if I can. Thanks for alerting us to it! -

I would indeed love to see Frankito's pics. I was suggesting we stick to the thread in case it got out of hand, but now SJ has made mention of bandwidth, I guess we had better stop. PM me it, Frankito! -

He's a cutie, and this dog he is sitting next to is, too. If you are the owner reading this, I also took a great shot of you and your dog. Let me know and I can email it to you. Two little ladies standing on a big dog. That's it folks. I also took a shot of a woman blowing bubbles, dressed as a fairy. If she would like to contact me, I can email her photo to her too. She looks great! She was running a stall. -
