  1. You're an angry man, Martin. But you do rather undermine your arguments when you claim that "The character building could have been sold for conversion raising easily enough to build any new hospital for cash". I have no idea what sum could have been raised from selling the previous building but I really doubt it would even have come close to paying for a state of the art flagship hospital. Just a thought.
  2. Foxtons (someone had to say it)
  3. Judging by the take-up on this thread, generally indifferent seems to win out. How about a one-off tax on MPs - that would have caught the public's imagination... Can't help feeling that it's a bad budget for London, and a bad budget for families. The stamp duty thing is purely political, designed to try and win votes, but is simply storing up and exacerbating the very problems that Labour blame for the whole mess the country is in now. And ultimately will have the effect of further pricing first-time buyers out of the market. To be fair, Darling has done his best to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and whilst I don't like the man I'm starting to think he's a much better Chancellor than Gordon ever was (and less hung up on class issues). I feel a little sorry for him - as Osborne pointed out on the news this morning, "we all know that Darling is not going to be Chancellor for long, whoever wins the election".
  4. During the week there are direct trains from Kings Cross St Pancras to Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill, which might be another option.

The east london line > will be at Forest hill in the next 1-2 months and > can take you directly to canada water (for canary > wharf) or shoreditch (spitalfields market which > I love) Ummm - I think TBNHG was being somewhat tongue in cheek. Back on topic, for green spaces you don't need to be at the upper (presumably southern) end of LL. You've got Dulwich Park (or East Dulwich park as a lot of people on here seem to call it...) and Sydenham Woods at that end, but if you're near ED or PR stations you've got Goose Green, Peckham Rye common and Peckham Rye Park on your doorstep, and if you're up the hill towards Camberwell/Denmark Hill you've got Ruskin Park next to Kings. Basically, wherever you are in the ED/Bellenden Rd area, you will be (a) near to decent shops, pubs and bars, (b) near to some great parks and open spaces and © not too far from some pretty average transport connections into London. So once you've decided how far you're prepared to be from a train station, I would just find a house/flat you like within that radius and sit back confident that you'll love it when you move in.
  6. It's a 50:50 shot either way, so it's not that much of a surprise anyway... We found out at the 20 week scan, and neither of us was ever in doubt that we were going to. Like others though, we were surprised by how judgmental friends were about the decision - when we first told one friend that we were expecting, her first reaction was "Don't find out what sex it is". Needless to say, she was one of the first we told once we'd found out... It's such a personal decision that I would never dream of telling anyone else what to do or passing judgment on their decision. I'm so pleased that we did, as it's helped me to feel closer to my wife's bump, and meant that we could immediately ignore half of the possible names!
  7. I suspect that for a lot of people (especially those with young kids) the cost of owning a house outweighs the risk that your landlord refuses to renew your 12 month lease or simply kicks you out on 3 months' (or less) notice. That was certainly the main reason we bought rather than continued renting. If we end up with capital gains, great. But frankly, if we sell at a price that means it's cost us about the same as it would have done to rent a similar place, then it will have been more than worth it. I can't believe the number of people on here who seem to be quite seriously hoping for a major crash in house prices though, in order to "make it more affordable" (for them). Given that a major crash in house prices tends to go hand in hand with a serious recession, the consequences are likely to be significant numbers of homeless families, significant rises in unemployment, and massive increases in government spending. Which inevitably lead to higher taxes. Seems a high price to pay so that you can buy that nice 3 bed you have your eye on. Provided you're not one of the casualties of unemployment of course...
  8. Maybe they're just being neighbourly and placing their bins where everybody is able to use them? I would suggest encouraging everybody to take advantage of this generosity by filling the bins with your own household rubbish. Perhaps Moxons could supply you with some suitable waste?
  9. To add to the above, from our experience I would say really don't expect them to tell you (even at the end) that everything is fine - which is all you actually want to hear. For a start, they're generally researchers rather than nurses and don't all have a great bedside manner and secondly English is a second language to a lot of them. We found that in practice, you will be given a huge amount of information but very little guidance on what it actually means. Also, presumably because they don't want to be sued, they don't seem to ever want to commit to saying anything other than "there are no major problems but we can't tell you if there are minor problems and the scans can't pick everything up anyway". And don't be surprised if you have to go back for more scans - so far we've had four scans (including a heart scan) by 24 weeks, but everything seems to be fine (no "major" problems at any rate!). I think they just like to get as much data as possible for their research! They also do a lot more tests than most other NHS hospitals (like checking for the nasal bone) so don't worry if they seem to be doing tests that friends of yours didn't have. And finally - good luck! Hope all goes well.
  10. And the machine doesn't give change so make sure you have some 50p pieces or the tokens become ?2 each...
  11. There's a few old photos here
  12. Perhaps admin felt that, since FCC operate through PR/Denmark Hill and not ED station, it was not strictly an ED issue (albeit that some ED residents doubtless use their services)? Just a thought. I am sure that if I started a thread about the Jubilee line, for example, it too would be swiftly moved to the Lounge, even though that is something that similar (or greater) number of ED residents might use on a daily basis.
  13. All of which is fine. But doesn't take into account that if your heating is on most of the time, your boiler will only actually be on for some of that time, whereas if you turn it off for a few hours it will then be on constantly for the next few hours to get back up to temperature. So that might mean that, overall, there's actually very little difference.
  14. KK - National Rail is showing 30 min delays on trains from ED now so hopefully you'll be on one soon! Edit - obviously crossed posts!
  15. I got the delayed 7.19 in which was fine. The 7.29 was running about 15 mins late as well so I guess that will knock on to later trains too. Trains back out of LB seemed to be ok too, with 5-10 mins delay on most.
  16. Trains were running ok at 7.30, but with about 15 minute delay on most.
  17. Pearl1 - I don't think the intention is to have a room (there wouldn't be space for an enclosed area anyway) but to provide extended shelter on the platform, which would be helpful in the rain, not least because it would mean fewer golf umbrellas so more chance of actually getting past people who are waiting and not getting a spoke in the eye...
  18. No problems getting into the City this morning - 8.05 to LB and bus from there. Apart from the odd patch of ice on the pavement you could hardly tell it had snowed in the centre. Side roads back in ED fairly icy but not too bad, and the path up to the platform at ED was more slush than ice.
  19. Denmark Hill trains seem a bit unreliable - according to the boards there this morning at just after 8, all northbound Thameslink trains (St Albans/Bedford) were cancelled through to 0837. But then 2 minutes later a train that the board said wasn't stopping pulled in and opened its doors, so I ended up getting in to work in almost record time. It's started snowing again here though, so whether I get back home is another question...
  20. I think it does cap - but only once you reach the daily travelcard amount (peak or off-peak depending on when you first use the train). Otherwise it charges you a single for each journey, so if you're just doing a return to LB it's cheaper to buy a return ticket. If you're doing a couple of bus or tube journeys as well, PAYG is more convenient.
  21. Anyone wanting to check if trains are running might find it helpful to check the live departures board on National Rail rather than relying on Barry to keep giving updates on here. Incidentally, the service this morning seemed to be fine, albeit with the odd minor delay.
  22. jim_the_chin - I think generally, they would all have been 2 up 2 down. What is now the kitchen in almost all of them would often previously have been a sloping roof bathroom (not sure if even that might have been a later addition though).
  23. Incidentally, can anyone explain why the people providing our public transport infrastructure need so many car parking spaces in central London? Surely they should be required to use public transport like the rest of London?
  24. What on earth are you doing? If you go telling Barry's bosses how great he is, he'll only go and get promoted and moved out of the area. Keep quiet and keep Barry! We could always start a forum collection to replace the pay rise he would have otherwise got....
